A descriptive and interpretive article about the conflict among Baptists in Tennessee concerning the reform ideas of Alexander Campbell, particularly as led and articulated by Garner McConnico. This article is both a critical biographical sketch of McConnico and narrative of Campbell's earliest conflict among Tennessee Baptists. Of particular focus is the impact Campbell's teaching had upon Baptists in the Middle Tennessee associations as a context for the establishment and flourishing of the Baptist Church of Nashville, later the Church Street Christian Church.

Intellectualism And American Parish Priests: A Study Of The Library Of Monsignor Bernard J. Beckmeyer, Stephanie Soule

The 1955 publication of John Tracy Ellis's article "American Catholics and the Intellectual Life" sparked new discussion among historians about the role of intellectualism in the lives of American Catholics. This article examines the intellectual habits of American parish priests in the early and mid-twentieth century by studying the working library of Monsignor Bernard J. Beckmeyer of Dayton, Ohio. The contents of his library support Ellis's assertion that parish priests usually concentrated on the administration of their parishes, and not on scholarship and intellectualism. This article deconstructs the racially exclusive national narrative presented in Dominican Manuel de Jesús Galván’s 1882 Enriquillo: leyenda histórica dominicana by putting the novel in dialogue with Haitian Émile Nau’s 1854 Histoire des caciques d’Haïti, considering how the former work simultaneously resists and inscribes itself within the metanarrative of New-World antislavery that the latter presents. Although both texts draw on the colonial crónicas to tell the story of an Amerindian uprising led by the cacique Enrique on the island of Hispaniola during the early sixteenth century, they deploy that history to different ends: Nau situates the rebellion at the beginning …

“Gleaning” refers to the mandate within the Mosaic Law that harvesters should leave behind “gleanings” for the sake of the poor who subsist on the literal and figurative margins of society. Although this biblical mandate is generally neglected and considered irrelevant in modern business practice, it holds powerful lessons to help guide modern businesses into transformational solidarity with the poor and marginalized. This paper interprets the biblical significance of gleaning, to discern how the principles of gleaning, though rooted in ancient agrarian culture, might be applicable to modern business which is generally far removed from agriculture. Joseph Michael Macko II was born in the small town of Greensburg, Pennsylvania in 1953, where he lived for 5 years until he moved to Covina California where lived until he joined the Navy. Instead of going to college Joseph served in the Vietnam War from 1973-1975 as a Navy Seabee and in the Navy reserves from 1975-1979. Joseph after his military career took up the sport of body building and has lifted weights ever since. This paper offers the reader ways for the business practitioner to participate in Christian apologetics. Apologetics is defined. The purpose and tasks of apologetics is described. A case is made for the importance of Christian apologetics. Several tactics are introduced that offer potential for the Christian apologist. A matrix describes the potential opportunities to develop Christian apologetics for the context of business and economics. A discussion follows regarding the implications for business scholars and Christian business school curriculum at all levels.

This exhibition celebrates 30 years of Women & Gender Studies at Augustana College through a celebration of 30+ years of Guerrilla Girls' actions, reminding us of the role that art can take in protest, activism and conversation around issues of gender, racial and economic justice. It featured works from Augustana Teaching Museum of Art's recent purchase of the Guerrilla Girls' Portfolio Compleat, as well as archival materials from Augustana's Special Collections on the Women & Gender Studies program.

After several decades of scholarship that discerned general patterns in literary representations of disability, recent years have seen a turn toward the specific and the particular, with a focused concentration on the ways in which individual texts and literary moments limn bodily difference. In a recent essay about disability in the early American novel, Sari Altschuler made a compelling case for this transition by showing that some of the standard claims about literary representations of disability simply failed to apply to the specific nature of early American fiction, and she consequently called for more particularized, historically grounded analyses of literary …
