The First World War saw a multitude of facial wounds, with veterans coming home with severe facial mutilation numbering in the thousands. These veterans have been somewhat overlooked in the historiography of medicine in World War I, and this work seeks to remedy that by examining every aspect of their lives, from the moment of the wound, to the aftermath of their return home. The medical professionals who treated these men gave a great deal of thought to the philosophy behind their work, and frequently voiced the opinion that their work was essential for the wellness of these men’s psyches. …

The goal of this study is to understand the role that honor represents for warriors through certain conflicts from the XIIIth to XVth century. The Christian ethic was in opposition to the Feudal ethic, and the opposition between the two provoked several changes in the way honor was perceived in warfare throughout the centuries. The notion of honor depends on the thoughts and the context into which individuals or groups belong. It implies reciprocity; measured by norms often recognized by an other entity. The idea behind The Character Studies of Time: A Two Movement Work for Orchestra should be reminiscent of, and is inspired by the character pieces of Robert Schumann’s Carnival. Although the works of Robert Schumann are originally short piano solos, the spirit of the character piece and all that it entails could be found throughout The Character Studies of Time. This symphony does not follow a strict form of 19th century writing, although the elements of romanticism can be found throughout the piece. My research and implementation includes creating multisensory experiences through immersive technologies. Starting in the late 1990s, Latin American immigrants began settling in great numbers in non-traditional immigration states in the Deep South. Birmingham, Alabama, one of the large cities in the region, rapidly experienced a staggering growth in its Latin American immigrant population, which created numerous difficulties with access to services and intercommunity relations. The current study looks at these difficulties and the institutional framework that was established to address them and support the settlement process of incoming immigrants in the city. Parental emotion socialization has been associated with youth emotional development. However, less is known about the influences of emotion socialization on emotional functioning in late adolescence and emerging adulthood. The first manuscript examined the factor structure of The Emotions as a Child Scale (EAC) in late adolescence and emerging adulthood and evaluates its measurement invariance across gender and ethnicity. The results showed that parental responses to children’s negative emotions could be categorized into supportive and unsupportive responses and the EAC demonstrated stronger measurement invariance across gender than ethnic groups. Objective: Long- and short-term opioid use is associated with morphological changes in the human brain. Opioids have analgesic and adverse effects, including addiction, that differently impact men and women. The current study aimed to investigate whether differences exist between men and women in gray matter volume changes after acute morphine treatment for chronic low back pain. Methods: This study analyzed data from 27 chronic low back pain patients (17 men, 10 women) who were treated with oral morphine over a period of 30 days. As a whole these poems explore themes such as family, craftsmanship, folklore, and the tension between humanity and nature. The overarching narrative revolves around the idea of transformation. Here, the speaker transforms from the mundane to the mythological and natural elements are acted upon to produce a shift in their physical state. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. ABSTRACT The Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM) posits an organization of the bilingual lexicon based on conceptual and lexical links between first (L1) and second (L2) language words (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). This model predicts that increasing L2 proficiency would lead to the strengthening of conceptual links between L1 and L2 words (Cheng & Leung, 1989; Dong et al., 2005, Francis et al., 2014). The question arises, however, whether proficiency is the only predictor of conceptual link strength. From 1865 to 1920, Thoroughbred horse racing matured in Louisiana, developing into a national sport shaped by the processes of modernization, professionalization, and reform. Before the onset of the Civil War, the leaders of Southern thoroughbred horse racing came from the planter elite who used African-American slave horsemen in shows of “amateur” recreation. Combining upper-class recreation with lower and middle-class entertainment, horse racing was a performance of social power. The Civil War devastated the Louisiana turf, scattering horses and men – but sportsmen proposed that post-war racing would help the state recover. This is only Temporary examines my personal history of homes as reimagined spaces. The series of prints in the exhibition depicts reconstructed memories of houses. These visual narratives give context to the installation constructed from handmade paper and raw materials. The framework is reminiscent of housing plans that converge into a labyrinth. Participants actively engage the space, navigating the confined structure. A playful nature runs throughout the prints and installation reflecting upon reinterpreted memories within transitional spaces.

Concepts related to style change have been discussed thoroughly by theorists such as Leonard Meyer and others. In the case of Czech scholar, Antonín Dvořák, this change relates directly to his pentatonic style. While many musicologists suggest that the composer's travels to the United States in the early 1890's had a profound effect on the birth of his pentatonic style, this thesis posits that Dvořák's pentatonicism is apparent from even his earliest works. The Cleveland Jewish Society Books were published from 1915 to 1925 by the Jewish Independent Publishing Company, a locally owned publisher that published the weekly Jewish Independent. The books were similar in appearance to the Cleveland Blue Book, a guide for society’s elite. The listings in the Cleveland book listed individuals by country club. The Jewish books list individuals by congregations. In many cases there are separate lists of the congregations’ ladies auxiliary, along with information on social service agencies. The book also included advertisements.
