Finding aid and scan (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3075. Letter, 12 March 1848, of L. W. Gunther, Cadiz, Kentucky, to Charles H. Blake, Blandville, Kentucky. He refers to Blake taking delivery of goods from the steamboat Tennessee, reports correspondence from England and France concerning their stave business, and discusses the specifications for the English customer. He also makes reference to a “shipbuilding enterprise.”

Finding aid, scan and typescript (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3074. Agreement, 25 February 1854, between O. S. Warner and Thomas Meador setting out the terms of Meador’s employment on Warner’s farm in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. The agreement provides for payment, the provision of housing and produce from an orchard, and the use of pasture by Meador. Meador’s 12-month, full-time engagement makes allowances for his family and business, and for “unnecessary exposure” to “wet weather or heavy dews.”

Settler Social Order: The Violence Of Policing In New Mexico, Elisabeth Rose Ehlert Perkal

This thesis argues that in order to understand how and why police violence happens in the U.S., it is necessary to situate these interactions within a framework of settler colonialism. The police exist to maintain social order and, in the case of the U.S., this social order is defined by hegemonic structures of power including settler colonialism. Thus, the police fabricate and enforce settler social order that requires subjugating and eliminating Native people in order to preserve settler sovereignty. This thesis intervenes into monolithic critiques of policing in the U.S. and argues that critiques of police violence are most productive …

Of Mermaids, Metal, And Maine: An Illustrated Memoir, Mercedes Mclean-Wheeler

Honors Theses

This creative literary thesis consists of the first chapters of a memoir, offering readers a glimpse of my childhood world and self in rural Maine. The memoir's overarching theme is the interplay between person and place. The work also explores the ability of memory and imagination to shape perception. Included are several of my own drawings to help illuminate my imaginative and lived experiences, evoking the odd but artful whimsy of childhood. While still rooted firmly in memoir, the project draws from fantasy, magical realism, and graphica, reflecting modern literature's inclination to transcend traditional boundaries of genre and style.

This article discusses the results of a study with an all-women police station and other police stations in Guwahati, Assam, India, considering their occupational stress and hazards related to womanhood issues. In this descriptive study, a sample of 30 women police was selected by purposive sampling and analyses were performed using responses to a questionnaire method and individual/group meetings. Well-being as well as levels of satisfaction leading to the commitment of the policewomen to their organization have been identified. Modern microcredit, as a tool for economic and social development, emerged with the assumption that it would promote women’s empowerment. Some researchers have found that microcredit has had a significant amount of success. However, some of these supportive studies have also ignored the subjective history of the participants. A second critical view of microcredit presents the practice as a Western World notion which exploits women as a tool of the market economy in order to gain profit, arguing that it has failed to provide an alternative to women’s vulnerability and survival. This paper analyses the impact of commercial cardamom farming on the livelihoods of women, revisiting the concept of the “feminization of poverty”. For the analysis of cash crop farming in Eastern Nepal, both quantitative and qualitative approaches have been used. A quantitative survey was conducted in 513 households in Ilam district between November and December 2015 followed by qualitative data collection. The institution of marriage is sacred and binding for generations in India; however, in contemporary times, domestic violence is a burning issue as it questions the sanctity of the Indian family system.
