Digital Refuse: Canadian Garbage, Commercial Content Moderation And The Global Circulation Of Social Media’S Waste, Sarah T. Roberts Jan 2016

Digital Refuse: Canadian Garbage, Commercial Content Moderation And The Global Circulation Of Social Media’S Waste, Sarah T. Roberts

Media Studies Publications

The story of a rogue Canadian garbage barge attempting to offload illegal garbage in the Philippines opens this article on techno-trash, in order to underline both the relationships between countries of the Global North with countries of the Global South in matters of waste, as well as to reframe discussions of techno-trash as one fundamentally tied to material things. The definition of techno-trash is then expanded, to cover digital detritus created through an entirely digital set of practices I term “Commercial Content Moderation.” The attempt to offload mounds of e-waste and the similar ways in which a great deal of …

In/Visibility, Sarah T. Roberts Jan 2016

In/Visibility, Sarah T. Roberts

Media Studies Publications

In online life there is a normative supposition that the information- and image-rich environment of the web and other platforms should provide unfettered access to the circulation of all types of content. Less attention is paid to what is not seen, to the invisible—be it actual content that is rescinded, altered or removed, or the opaque decision-making processes that maintain its flow. In/visibility online is central to the intertwined functions/mechanisms of user experience and platform control, further operationalized under globalized, technologically driven capitalism. A digital labour phenomenon that is both responsible for it and relies upon it: is …

Decline Of Perceived Beauty: Facial Representations Between The 18th And 20th Century In Western Art, Javier De La Rosa, Nandita Nandita Dutta, Juan Luis Juan Luis Suárez Jan 2016

Decline Of Perceived Beauty: Facial Representations Between The 18th And 20th Century In Western Art, Javier De La Rosa, Nandita Nandita Dutta, Juan Luis Juan Luis Suárez

CulturePlex Lab Publications

This study focuses on the question of beauty standards defined by scientific methodology in terms of face symmetry and averageness. This definition correlates with art history and the human faces depicted in a large set of artworks. Recent research in evolutionary psychology and neuro-aesthetics suggests that the attractiveness of a face can be conceptualized as the sum of a varied set of distinct features. These aspects are described in terms of averageness, symmetry, sexual dimorphism, pleasant expressions, and youthfulness.

A Deranged Argument Against Public Languages, Robert Stainton Jan 2016

A Deranged Argument Against Public Languages, Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

My focus is Q: Are there really such things as public languages? I address an argument for a negative answer, extracted from Davidson’s “A Derangement of Epitaphs”. The argument appeals to an empirically attested phenomena, namely novelty and speech errors in successful conversational interactions, to show that knowledge of public language is neither necessary nor sufficient. Thus public languages have no explanatory role. Continues the idea, one should substitute in place of the convention-centric public language picture an alternative, with Prior and Passing theories. My first rebuttal is that there are senses in which knowledge of public language is necessary, …

Crimes of the Heart (2016) - Lighting

Lighting for this show created a nostalgic feeling in the kitchen as well as a false sense of safety and privacy from the swirling world of rumors and gossip outside. A sunset that penetrates through the windows of the house, moonlight that calms and focuses with the revelation of facts, and a sunrise that violates the kitchen in the same way as before were the bigger vocabularies of light used to help tell this story.

Reading The 'Book Of Nature': Emerson, The Hunterian Museum And Transatlantic Science, Samantha C. Harvey Jan 2016

Reading The 'Book Of Nature': Emerson, The Hunterian Museum And Transatlantic Science, Samantha C. Harvey

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the study of Romanticism is generally divided into European, British and American tracks, transatlantic connections are often obscured, resulting in what Richard Gravil calls 'the existence of a lost continent of literary exchange that our artificially divided academic community has . yet to recognize and explore' .1 This 'lost continent' is now being charted with a host of new critical approaches, including the emerging subfield of 'transatlantic ecologies' that attempts to investigate, in the words of Kevin Hutchings and John Miller, 'the key ways in which Western environmental discourses and associated literary practices .were forged in the crucible …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Negotiation is an important skill for faculty at all stages of their career, but one that research suggests is often uncomfortable for women faculty to employ. This paper focuses on the topic of negotiation, with an emphasis on providing practical ideas and strategies relevant to academic professionals at both entry-level and mid-career who find that they need to negotiate a career opportunity. The paper will review negotiation basics, as well as discuss what can be negotiated, how one might proceed to discuss these, and how listening is critical to negotiation. By viewing negotiation as a "wise agreement"1 that seeks …

Singular Spaces: The Power And The Passion Of Spanish Art Environments, Jo Farb Hernandez Jan 2016

Singular Spaces: The Power And The Passion Of Spanish Art Environments, Jo Farb Hernandez

Faculty Publications

The art environments of Spain – like those the world over – display an astounding conceptual creativity and a vernacular, seat-of-the-pants approach to construction that makes use of locally available found, natural, and recycled objects as well as fabricated components built from scratch. Each result is unique, revealing each creator-builder’s interests, challenges, and concerns as they have developed over the course of a lifetime; as such, it is easy to understand why art environments are so complex. And because we are able to physically enter into and explore the constructions as visitors, we complete the artworks in the same way …

Alien Affects: Movement, Migration, And Landscapes Of Citizenship, Michael Andrew Lechuga Jan 2016

Alien Affects: Movement, Migration, And Landscapes Of Citizenship, Michael Andrew Lechuga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alien Affects is a materialist examination of the ways citizenship landscapes are shaped by three mechanisms of control - extraterrestrial film, border security, and the legal apparatuses of the State - that accelerate flows of dominant national citizenship and hinder the movements of migrants. As bodies move through borders and through communities in the US, they are subjected to techniques of citizenship control that divide citizens from aliens. This political division maximizes the State's capacity to benefit from the mobility of its preferred citizen groups while subjugating its alien groups - those who might be characterized as such because they …

Fundamentally Incompetent: Homophobia, Religion And The Right To Parent, Samantha Brennan, Colin Mcleod Jan 2016

Fundamentally Incompetent: Homophobia, Religion And The Right To Parent, Samantha Brennan, Colin Mcleod

Data and Test Instruments

What happens when the expression of parental values in child rearing runs contrary to the claim of children to be loved and respected by parents? This chapter asks whether parents who hold, and seek to express, attitudes and beliefs that are contemptuous of sexual minorities are competent parents. We argue that homophobic views held by parents can pose a serious threat to the well-being of children and that adults who harbour such views fall below the threshold of competency requisite to acquiring and maintaining the moral right to parent. We explore this issue by considering whether conservative religious fundamentalists who …

Before The Law, Sharon Sliwinski Jan 2016

Before The Law, Sharon Sliwinski

Data and Test Instruments

In 2005, a group of photographers stood alongside the people of the small town of Bil’in, in the West Bank, and documented their fight to prevent the Israeli government from building the West Bank Barrier. Inspired by what they had seen in Bil’in, the photographers decided to form Activestills, a collective whose work has become vital in documenting the struggle against Israeli occupation and the attempt to continue with everyday life in extraordinary circumstances.

1 volume in slipcase, 19 pages. "Printed in an edition of 25 with several artist's proofs. Housed in a clamshell box covered in Japanese linen cloth."--colophon. "This book(s) is the result of my extended study of Shakespeare's comedies. I find the comedies individually to be enjoyable but there is a sameness to many of the plots that allows me to mix them up in my head. So much mistaken identity, gender confusion and various other contrivances while romping their way to a fifth act wedding or two. Even more problematic are the decidedly unfunny themes that are common in many …

Turning On The Lights: Transcending Energy Poverty Through The Power Of Women Entrepreneurs, Leslie C. Gray, Alaina Boyle, Victoria Yu

Miller Center Fellowship

Solar lanterns offer affordable, high-quality lighting in developing countries. A number of organizations, including social enterprises, make solar lanterns available to rural households as an alternative to candles or kerosene lamps. One of the most successful of these organizations is Solar Sister.

Solar Sister, a social enterprise operating in Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria, is dedicated to eradicating energy poverty through the economic empowerment of women. In addition to economically empowering its women entrepreneurs, the business model of Solar Sister also cultivates sales networks built on trust in last-mile distribution methods.

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jan 2016

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between religious faith and public reason has occupied an increasingly central role in Jürgen Habermas’s mature work. Yet this recent engagement with questions of religious meaning also illuminates a significant area of development in Habermas’s thought. While his earlier writings emphasized a need to subordinate religious beliefs to rational critique and to translate religious truth claims into publicly accessible forms of reasoning, his later writings signal a shift to a more cooperative understanding of religious faith and critical reason that highlights the ongoing potential of religion to advance rational discourse and social criticism in the public sphere. This …
