Place And Politics At The Frankfurt Paulskirche After 1945, Shelley Rose Jan 2016

Place And Politics At The Frankfurt Paulskirche After 1945, Shelley Rose

History Faculty Publications

This article investigates the reconstruction of the Frankfurt Paulskirche as a symbol of German democratic identity after World War II. The place memory of the Paulskirche is deeply rooted in the 1848 Parliament which anticipated the formation of a German democratic state. The church provided postwar Germans with a physical anchor for their sense of history and feelings of Heimat. This place identity pervades post-1945 debates about the reconstruction of the church and the appropriate uses of that space in the context of Frankfurt’s devastated urban and political landscape. Despite this, the place identity of the Paulskirche remains understudied in …

[Book Review] Modernism, Media, And The Virtual, Yair Solan Jan 2016

[Book Review] Modernism, Media, And The Virtual, Yair Solan

Humanities and Politics Faculty Articles

Katherine Biers's Virtual Modernism: Writing and Technology in the Progressive Era outlines the virtual turn in early American modernism, arguing that modernist writers fashioned a “poetics of the virtual” in response to mass culture and its developing communications technologies before the First World War. The book examines five authors (Stephen Crane, Henry James, James Weldon Johnson, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein), placing their work in conversation with various forms of mass media as well as the vitalist and pragmatist philosophy of Henri Bergson and William James that theorized the nature of virtual experience. Biers demonstrates how these writers both drew upon …

Claws And Controllers: Werewolves And Lycanthropy In Digital Games, Melissa Bianchi Jan 2016

Claws And Controllers: Werewolves And Lycanthropy In Digital Games, Melissa Bianchi

Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles

Bridging a host of narrative and procedural genres, werewolves feature prominently in videogames as characters to control, enemies to kill, and allies to assist. Yet, despite the broad range of werewolf depictions found in games, there is a relative paucity of research examining how games depict werewolves and how these depictions relate to the mythos writ large. To address gamic werewolves specifically, this essay performs close readings of several games, notably The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006) and The Sims 2: Pets (2006). The readings are guided by the works of media scholars, including Alexander Galloway, Ian Bogost, Souvik …

The Chromatic Singalong Project: Pop/Rock As A Framework For Sight-Singing Fluency, Jena Root Jan 2016

The Chromatic Singalong Project: Pop/Rock As A Framework For Sight-Singing Fluency, Jena Root

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Successful sight-singing results from the ear, voice, and mind working in synchrony, and at its best translates to real-time musical understanding and facility on the student's primary instrument. Finding a pedagogical model for this level of musical fluency can be elusive: while the metronome is a time-honored practice tool, its relentless click lacks an external musical context that can lead students into a perpetual trap: Start, stumble, count off, start again, etc.

The Chromatic Singalong is a transcription/composition/sight-singing project designed to help students build fluency in singing and understanding music in real time. It is a capstone to the third …

Man And Idea: Complexity And Duality In The Hero Of Wagner's "Ring", Elizabeth Mary Szott Jan 2016

Man And Idea: Complexity And Duality In The Hero Of Wagner's "Ring", Elizabeth Mary Szott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The character Siegfried, much like the whole of Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung, is open to interpretation by scholars and critics from a variety of different perspectives. Although these interpretations often reflect the historical, political, and cultural circumstances of their times, they nevertheless claim some legitimacy by appealing to the musical and dramatic texts of the Ring for evidence. This thesis examines Wagner's conception of Siegfried and different historical perceptions of the character, discusses ambiguity both in the drama and in the music itself, and suggests a reading of Siegfried as having a dual purpose: that of …

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott Jan 2016

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of human flourishing currently holds a position of prominence within Christian theology. Numerous theologies assert that a person enjoys the fullness of humanity, not through conformity to an essential nature, but through being a living demonstration of what human being can become. This approach to theological anthropology has proven especially useful for advocacy on behalf of marginalized groups. Nevertheless, because this approach identifies human being with the capacity for purposive agency, it remains incapable of affirming the full humanity of persons with profound cognitive disabilities. These persons lack abilities that purposive agency presupposes, such as self-representation, language, and …

Thresholds Of Invisibility: A Perspective On Moments Of Transition In Scholarly Rhetorics, Robert D. Gilmor Jan 2016

Thresholds Of Invisibility: A Perspective On Moments Of Transition In Scholarly Rhetorics, Robert D. Gilmor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation suggests that certain historical moments of transition generate identifiable schisms in scholarly discourse that leave contemporary scholars unable to communicate with one another. At these moments of Augustinian "unlikeness," established scholarly commitments, such as logocentrism, are rendered invisible to the critics that rely on them as new forms and technologies become the (ostensible) talking points of discourse. The confusion at these moments contribute to a complex of discursive practices that can be called "thresholds of invisibility," or moments of transition and division, when scholars are captivated by new forms and less attentive to the continuing influence of already …

Materiality In Site Responsive Media Art, Daniel Dean, John W. Kim Jan 2016

Materiality In Site Responsive Media Art, Daniel Dean, John W. Kim

Art & Design Faculty Research

Daniel Dean and Ben Moren are both longtime contributors to MAW. Sharing an interest in experimental filmmaking, they formed Mobile Experiential Cinema (MEC) in 2011 for a Northern Spark commission to explore site-specific projection. They have subsequently collaborated on several works that explore comparable themes and ideologies. MEC makes use of the Mobile Broadcasting Unit developed by MAW as a platform for their own work, but Dean and Moren make significant changes to the outfit to facilitate their divergent approach to site-specific, responsive projection.

The last section highlighted how site was not a central concern in MAW’s public projections. It …

Don Quixote In Russia In The Eighteenth And Nineteenth Centuries: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd Jan 2016

Don Quixote In Russia In The Eighteenth And Nineteenth Centuries: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This study examines the problem of the perception of Don Quixote in Russia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By using materials inaccessible to English-speaking scholars, I want to demonstrate that this process of appropriation was a long and a complex one, and there were specific reasons for that. The first modern novel, upon arrival in Russia, received minimal attention and was perceived as a simple, comical book; then, gradually, it started to gain significance. The majority of the materials that are used throughout this text are only available in Russian, are kept in the scientific libraries of Saint Petersburg …

Winter Wood: Melodies For Soprano And Harp, Emmanuel M. Dubois

Emmanuel Dubois Compositions

Op. 49 : 1 score (ix + 26 pages) ; includes three Russian poems by I. Bunin, F. Tyutchev, Y. Petrachuk, poem translations, and composer's introduction.

"Russian writers are known for their beauty and severity, and their celebration in poetry, literature, music and films is legendary. The beautiful legend of the Snow-maiden - Snegurochka - sublimely put in opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, evokes the renewal of life in springtime and the end of life in winter without violence, without sense of loss. It is quite remarkable in comparison with the thirst of violence in so much of the world. It is …
