The God-Camera Of Theology And Memory In Terrence Malick’S The Tree Of Life, Sherry Coman

Terrence Malick’s film The Tree of Life presents a personal and emotionally-laden memory play that is visually and symbolically “framed” by theological and biblical contexts that are both explicit and implicit. This paper explores how the film’s constantly moving camera and elliptical editing help to establish a trope for depicting how God moves in the lives of the characters. Through non-traditional film production and presentation techniques, Malick manifests a theme of “God as ultimate artist” who participates with us in the restoration of what is broken, and who makes “all things new”.

This article discusses the influence that A Dream of Red Mansions had on Xu Zhenya's novel writing. In his early years, Xu Zhenya wrote sixty Ci-poems about A Dream of Red Mansions. These Ci-poems indicate his understanding of characters in the novel and the love tragedy of Baoyu and Daiyu. When writing novels, he always uses A Dream in Red Mansions as an exemplar. To many Western readers, Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, published in 1904, is a seminal work of what they perceive as Japanese kaidan literature. The fact that this work was first published in English for Western readers reveals the transcultural as well as translational nature of this literary genre that is called kaidan in the English-speaking context. Li Jinxi, a pioneer in Chinese language and literature education, published a series of papers on the ideas of "Tong Chou" (integration) and "Jiu Ji"(remedy) in Chinese language and literature education in tertiary institutes. The paper is a rethinking of writers' ethnic identity by, first of all, summarizing the basis on which ethnic writers are often categorized, namely by blood, nurturing, professed recognition or inclination, and analyzing the defects of such classification. Following this analysis, it discusses the subjective part of ethnic writers' identity selection, focusing mostly on the often neglected elements of identity — its performativity and its temporality; it argues that we need to abandon essentialism by embracing the theory of social constructionism. Reber’s axiom: “Any organism with flexible cell walls, a sensitivity to its surrounds and the capacity for locomotion will possess the biological foundations of mind and consciousness” does not seem to be supported by things we know and the logic of evolutionary biology. The latter leads to the conclusion that conscious species are flexible in their behavior (rather than in their cell walls), as argued in Ng (1995, 2016). This study applied an 8-item index of recent sexual-risk behaviors to young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) and evaluated the distribution for normality. The distribution was tested for associations with possible antecedents of sexual risk. YBMSM (N = 600), aged 16–29 years, were recruited from a sexually transmitted infection clinic, located in the southern US. Men completed an extensive audio computer-assisted self-interview. Thirteen possible antecedents of sexual risk, as assessed by the index, were selected for analyses. The 8-item index formed a normal distribution with a mean of 4.77 (SD = 1.77). Peace-building is comprehensively defined by the UN Secretary- General’s Policy Committee as a “range of measures targeted to reduce the risk of lapsing or relapsing into conflict by strengthening national capacities at all levels for conflict management and to lay the foundation for sustainable peace and development.” Peace transformation and reconstruction processes were perceived to provide windows of opportunity to reshape existing political settlements, especially through addressing underlying power dynamics.
