Psychological Pathology And Aging In Cervantes’S Don Quixote De La Mancha, Ida Sudol
Psychological Pathology And Aging In Cervantes’S Don Quixote De La Mancha, Ida Sudol
Hispanic Studies Honors Papers
Miguel de Cervantes wrote his most famous work, Don Quixote de La Mancha, in a prison cell after a life of great misfortune. The work he created, however, changed his fate, and to this day lives on as one of the most-read pieces of all time. Unique to Cervantes’s literary creation is the applicability of its themes across history. Though the setting is 16th-Century Spain, the topics of the work include aspects of psychopathology, personality, and aging. This synthesis of psychology, philosophy, and human character outlines concepts that would benefit clinicians in their understanding of geriatric patients, which is among …
Self-Revelatory Performance: The Intentional Use Of Theatre’S Therapeutic Nature, Leah Shapiro
Self-Revelatory Performance: The Intentional Use Of Theatre’S Therapeutic Nature, Leah Shapiro
Theater Honors Papers
Self-Revelatory performance, considered both a form of drama therapy and a unique type of theatre, is defined as a form in which a performer creates an original piece of theatre based on existing life issues in need of therapeutic exploration (Emunah, 2015). The purpose of this Honors Study is to delve into Self-Revelatory performance as a form that explores the intentional use of theatre’s therapeutic nature. Self-Revelatory performance is a hybrid of both therapy and theatre because it is an experience that offers transformation, understanding, transcendence, and often healing, while ultimately creating a captivating and moving performance to be witnessed …

Does The Reformation Still Matter? (Calvin Shorts), Karin Maag
Does The Reformation Still Matter? (Calvin Shorts), Karin Maag
Calvin Press
This book offers a concise and highly-readable explanation of the dramatic changes that took place during the Reformation and helps readers understand the deeper impact of the Reformation beyond its own time period. Changes in theology and in worship, in the status of lay people and clergy, and in the relations between church and state reshaped Christians' views of themselves. Early modern Christians had to rethink their relationship with God and with other Christians based on these new realities. As contemporary Christians grasp the Reformation's dramatic impact in its own time, they will find resources for understanding and responding to …
Alternate Routes Of Administration Among Prescription Opioid Misusers And Associations With Sexual Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors, Mance E. Buttram, Steven P. Kurtz
Alternate Routes Of Administration Among Prescription Opioid Misusers And Associations With Sexual Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors, Mance E. Buttram, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
Literature suggests that young adult prescription opioid misusers who are using alternate routes of administration (e.g., snorting, injecting) may be engaging in sexual and non-sexual HIV risk behaviors. This study examines demographics, substance use, sexual risk behavior, and health and social problems associated with alternate routes of administration of prescription opioids among a sample of young adult prescription opioid misusers. Data are drawn from baseline assessments from a behavioral intervention trial. Eligible participants were ages 18–39, and reported recent (past 90 days) heterosexual sex, and recent and regular substance use and attendance at large, recognized local nightclubs. The analyses include …
The Feminine Sublime In 21st Century Surrealist Cinema, Abigail Sorensen
The Feminine Sublime In 21st Century Surrealist Cinema, Abigail Sorensen
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine how the characters in three contemporary surrealist films, Mulholland Dr. (2001), Under the Skin (2013), and Melancholia (2011), experience the sublime. In each film, the female characters are marked by the "otherness" of femininity along with the consequential philosophical and social alienation due to their marginalized roles within the patriarchal structure. Their confrontations with the otherness of sublimity are disparate from their male counterparts, whose experiences are not complicated by patriarchal oppression. The sublimity the characters are faced with forces them to recognize their subjugated social positioning. All three films will be examined to analyze different …

Police Brutality: Impacts On Latino And African American Lives And Communities, Angelica Delgado
Matt Meier Award
This research focused on Latino and African American experiences with law enforcement and the impact that those encounters have on health, well-being, parenting, and violence in communities of color. The community setting that was selected for this project was an elementary school in California’s South Bay. Three Latino parents, who live in the local neighborhood, and whose children attend the elementary school, agreed to participate in this study. Additionally, an African American male from the San Francisco Bay Area participated in the project as well. Qualitative interviews were conducted with all four participants. Results from the interviews reveal themes of …

Shared Differences: Creativity In Graduate Research, Barbara Milech, Sarah Mcgann
Shared Differences: Creativity In Graduate Research, Barbara Milech, Sarah Mcgann
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
In this article, we talk about the centrality of something that “feels creative” in the research process. We talk across shared differences ‒ different but cognate disciplines, different but cognate migrant histories, and the shared difference of a (past) supervisor/supervisee relationship. And we talk about that “something” as it relates to three important dimensions of graduate research: the nature of a creative-production thesis; the process of making/writing such a thesis; and the potential of a supervisory relationship pertaining to such making/writing. We want to think about graduate research from these perspectives in order to finesse any seductive opposition between “traditional” …
Techno-Apocalypse: Technology, Religion, And Ideology In Bryan Singer’S H+, Edward Brennan
Techno-Apocalypse: Technology, Religion, And Ideology In Bryan Singer’S H+, Edward Brennan
Books/Book chapters
This essay critically analyses the digital series H+. In the near future, adults who can afford them, have replaced tablets and cell phones with nanotechnology implants. The H+ implant acts as a medical diagnostic and can overlay the user's senses with a computer interface. The apocalypse comes in the form of a computer virus which infects the H+ network and instantly kills one third of humanity. The series represents the anxiety and religiosity that surrounds the possible social consequences of digital technology. It also explores the tensions and intersections between technology and faith. This essay makes the case, however, that …

Flinging The Apron And Tearing The Kerchief: Janie Crawford's Gestures In Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Madeline Elizabeth Celley
Flinging The Apron And Tearing The Kerchief: Janie Crawford's Gestures In Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Madeline Elizabeth Celley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that in her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston demonstrates protagonist Janie Crawford's development through her use of gesture. As the narrative moves throughout Janie's life, she becomes progressively able to communicate her feelings and desires through the use of her body's movements. By depicting Janie's subjectivity as fundamentally embodied, Hurston indicates an awareness of the cultural oppression Janie suffers, linking her body to those of women in the past that suffered as slaves. She draws attention to Janie's body by relying on her gestures in order to emphasize the …

A student at the author’s college pens a racist column on immigration for the school newspaper. Two departments, including the author’s, send campus-wide emails denouncing the rhetoric. A firestorm erupts, as much over the emails as over the op-ed. Years later, the student visits the author unannounced.

The Corinthian
It is now in the 16th year of the 21st century, and as a species, we are trying to improve. We’re trying to reduce our carbon footprint; we’re trying to help the sick and the poor; we’re trying to combat racism, anti-Semitism, and sexism. But as of recent years, sexism has been more on the back burner – not because it is less important, but because of the huge strides that were made in the Western world in the 20th century.
Apocalypse: Reading Revelation 21-22, Julie M. Smith
Apocalypse: Reading Revelation 21-22, Julie M. Smith
Maxwell Institute Publications
The Book of Revelation has perplexed and fascinated readers for centuries. In particular, its final two chapters—which contain the only extended description of heaven in the canon—beg for close examination and careful consideration. In this collection of essays, six scholars theologically examine Revelation 21–22. With approaches ranging from textual criticism to intertextual readings to conceptual analysis, this book sheds new light on a most enigmatic text.
