In Praise Of Iron Grandeur: The Sensibility Of Kōjō Moe And The Reinvention Of Urban Technoscape, Ikuho Amano
In Praise Of Iron Grandeur: The Sensibility Of Kōjō Moe And The Reinvention Of Urban Technoscape, Ikuho Amano
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
Since the late 1980s, sci-fi fans and machinery aficionados in Japan have expressed their fascination with factories, projecting an imagination that sites of industrial facilities are simulacra of futuristic urban technoscape portrayed in Hollywood films. Although factory watching used to be an activity for a limited population, in the past decade organized factory night tours are becoming increasingly popular in Japan. This type of tour has expanded public interest in factories located on coastal industrial zones as a form of popular leisure-time activity. Widely known as kōjō moe (‘factory infatuation’), fans have elevated plants to objects for aesthetic appreciation. This …

The Experiences Of Black Mft Doctoral Degree Holders With White Professors: A Phenomenological Study, Juliana M. Deans
The Experiences Of Black Mft Doctoral Degree Holders With White Professors: A Phenomenological Study, Juliana M. Deans
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
The purpose of this research is to explore the experiences of Black doctoral degree holders’ interactions with their White professors in a Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program. There are a number of studies on the effectiveness of White professors and Black graduate students, but few focus specifically on the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. This study employed existential phenomenological methodology to examine Black MFT doctoral degree holders’ perceptions of their White professors. The experiences of six Black doctoral degree holders who attended COAMFTE-accredited programs were examined. The process involved an in-depth semi-structured interview. The study also revealed five …

Book Review: Here I Am: Faith Stories Of Korean American Clergywomen, Rebecca S. Jeong
Book Review: Here I Am: Faith Stories Of Korean American Clergywomen, Rebecca S. Jeong
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This volume, Here I am: Faith Stories of Korean American Clergywomen is a unique compilation of narratives, theological reflections, and sermons from the eleven Korean American female ministers whose voices and wisdoms have been easily disregarded and overlooked. The particularity of the book has obviously originated from Korean American clergywomen’s distinct experiences; for example, marginalization and racism from the dominant society, immigration and displacement, creative existence in bicultural and multi-religious heritages, ongoing struggling because of cultural prejudice against female leadership, and sexism and ageism in the male-centered hierarchical and patriarchal ecclesiological setting.
Book Review: Making Room At The Table: An Invitation To Multicultural Worship, Rebecca S. Jeong
Book Review: Making Room At The Table: An Invitation To Multicultural Worship, Rebecca S. Jeong
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Making Room at the Table is a collection of essays sharing Christian theologians’ struggles with the 21st century’s emerging theological issue of multicultural worship. This publication is twelve essays written by current and former members of faculty at Princeton Theological Seminary. By adopting the primary metaphor of Christian worship, the Lord’s Table, the writers make an effort to answer these main questions; “How do we celebrate the Lord together by maintaining each unique cultural identity?”, “How do we keep tension between worship that is faithful to our own theological and liturgical histories and worship that at the same time is …
Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
In this article I discuss the close relationship between colonialism and the expansion of language. Language is always politically contested. A language can become an international language today because it has a long history of colonization and subjugation of other groups of people. I analyze the sociopolitical dimension of tongues by engaging, among others, linguist Roman Jakobson, philosopher Michel Foucault, and cultural theorist Judith Butler. By placing tongues in the context of the politics of language, I aim to show that the practice of speaking in tongues can be viewed as a strategic subversion and disruption of the regime of …
The Power Of Encouragement: The Role Of Christian Academic Librarians In Supporting The Whole Student, Earleen J. Warner
The Power Of Encouragement: The Role Of Christian Academic Librarians In Supporting The Whole Student, Earleen J. Warner
Librarian Publications and Presentations
Christian librarians are exhorted to consider the role of providing encouragement, care, and emotional and spiritual support to college students. Caring for the whole student can have a positive impact on college student success and retention, as well as have a transformational effect on students’ spiritual lives. By treating college students as whole persons created in the image of God, Christian academic librarians can not only help these students succeed by meeting their academic needs, but also help students thrive by supporting them emotionally and spiritually.

A Good Measure Of Sacrifice: Aspects Of Zambia’S Contribution To The Liberation Wars In Southern Africa, 1964-1975, Clarence Chongo
Zambia Social Science Journal
From the early 1960s, and throughout the 1970s, southern African liberation movements successfully waged wars of national liberation, forcing white minority regimes to negotiate independence under black majority rule. This success partly stemmed from extensive diplomatic, military, and material support extended to various liberation movements by regional alliances such as the frontline states and transnational state actors and solidarity movements. This article examines salient aspects of Zambia’s contribution as a prominent regional actor to the liberation wars in southern Africa. In doing so, it underlines the nature and significance of Zambia’s support for the liberation movements. I argue that Zambia’s …

Comics And Linguistics, Frank Bramlett
Comics And Linguistics, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
However we define comics, it is safe to claim that in general they consist of two main components: images and language. With some exceptions, the vast majority of comics include linguistic elements: speech balloons, thought balloons, narrative boxes, sound effects, and ambient language (language used in the background, as on store fronts, t-shirts, restaurant menus, and the like). Comics scholarship examines the language used in comics to say something about narrative, character development, even the nature of comics themselves. And while fitful linguistic analysis of comics began in the early 20th century, only recently has the academic discipline of …

North Omaha it is time for our community to “straighten up and fly right”. That’s an old black phase and a line in an old song translated means let’s get our act together. Once again we have a major election year, 2016, facing us. Once again we have a lot at stake. Once again we have an opportunity to make a difference for our community by voting in our own interest. Once again I am pleading to our community to not again squander our power and our leverage by not voting. My beloved here is too much at stake.

L’Acteur Et Les Émotions Au Théâtre Et Au Cinéma, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau
Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

Mother Knows Best: The Overbearing In Coriolanus And Psycho, Mikaela Lafave
The Corinthian
Psychoanalytic critics have focused on the mother-son relationship throughout its criticism, stemming from Freud’s reinterpretation of the Oedipal myth. These relationships have dominated popular culture, showing up in modern contexts as recently as this year. With the current fascination with these relationships at the forefront, this paper chooses to examine two texts formative in establishing these relationships – Shakespeare’s Coriolanus and Hitchcock’s Psycho.
Defying Boundaries: Mary Musgrove In Early Colonial Georgia, Courtland B. Nation
Defying Boundaries: Mary Musgrove In Early Colonial Georgia, Courtland B. Nation
The Corinthian
Often referred to as the ‘Pocahontas of Georgia,’ Mary Musgrove played a very prominent role in facilitating peaceful relationships between Native Americans and English settlers. And, much like Pocahontas, recent scholarship on Mary Musgrove has slowly been chipping away at the mask designated to her by popular memory. Historian Michael D. Green argues that Mary Musgrove’s life “represented a distinct vision for the future of the English in America.” This vision was one in which Native American and English identities could be combined, which Mary intended not only for herself, but also for English colonists and the Creeks. Mary’s vision …

An Oral History With Liz Stagg Of The Oxford Farmers' Market, Liz Stagg, Victoria De Leone
Oral History Interviews
Liz Stagg and her husband Frank Coppola owned and operated The Farmers' Market Store for 12 years. It was a small store in Oxford, MS that offered local produce, meats, dairy, and other food items. Her husband passed away in 2015, and Liz closed the store in October 2016. I was trying to understand how Liz saw her place in the community, and what drove her to open, and close, the store.
This oral history was conducted as a final project for Catarina Passidomo’s class on Southern Foodways in the Fall of 2016.

Sierpinski’s Square
We now live in a digital era of toddlers with IPads, teens who know little of current events, and adults staggering to fill the technological generation gap. We even have a tiny friend named Siri trapped in our cell phones to tend to our every question and cellular need. Where has our natural curiosity gone? Humans, the single most advanced species on the planet, the inventors of the wheel, are now stuck behind a white and blue screen.

Breaking Down Barriers: The Intersection Of Medicine And Faith, Kaitlyn Lindgren, Ashley Kethcart
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
While medicine and faith are often presented as contradictory concepts, the two play complementary roles in people's health. Christian prayer and Buddhist meditation practices have an impact on health, as well as alternative forms of medicine. These influences can work in tandem to increase the mental and physical health of all people and also demonstrate that science and faith need not always be in opposition.
