Dana Robinson On Hendrik W. Dey’S Afterlife Of The Roman City, Dana Robinson Jan 2016

Dana Robinson On Hendrik W. Dey’S Afterlife Of The Roman City, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The fall of Rome was an urban affair. Alaric’s sack of the city in 410 CE may have been more emotionally jarring than genuinely disruptive, but its long echo down the corridors of history testifies to the imaginative power that the city of Rome held over citizens of its empire and their medieval descendants. But Rome was not the only city on whose monumental stage the empire played out its fate. The transformations that Late Antiquity wrought were enacted in urban microcosms from Gibraltar to the Euphrates. But even after they ceased to be ruled by a Roman emperor, communities …

Herman Bavinck Between Scholastic And Modern Psychology: Toward A "Reformed Psychology.", Joohyun Kim Jan 2016

Herman Bavinck Between Scholastic And Modern Psychology: Toward A "Reformed Psychology.", Joohyun Kim

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

Bavinck completed his first psychology book, Principles of Psychology (Beginselen der Psychologie, 1897) in the middle of his theological writings from his interaction with the nineteenth century psychologies. In 1920, Bavinck published another psychology book entitled Biblical and Religious Psychology (Bijbelsche en Religieuze Psychologie) on the basis of solid exegesis and biblical principles. In Principles of Psychology, Bavinck intended that his psychological principles would be as worthy as the empirical psychology of his day. Kuyper also stressed the doctrinal value of faculty psychology to Bavinck’s first psychology book in his review. Yet, these two psychology books were virtually neglected both …

Is 'Equal Pay For Equal Work' Merely A Principle Of Nondiscrimination?, Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2016

Is 'Equal Pay For Equal Work' Merely A Principle Of Nondiscrimination?, Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Should people who perform equal work receive equal pay? Most would say ‘yes’, at least insofar as this question is understood to be asking whether employers should be permitted to discriminate against employees on the basis of race or sex. But suppose the employees belong to all of the same traditionally protected groups. Is (what I call) nondiscriminatory unequal pay for equal work wrong? Drawing an analogy with price discrimination, I argue that it is not intrinsically wrong, but it can be deceptive, in which case it is wrong.

Did Saint Paul Take Up The Great Commission?: Discipleship Transposed Into A Pauline Key (Chapter 7 Of Ethics And Ecclesia), Nijay Gupta Jan 2016

Did Saint Paul Take Up The Great Commission?: Discipleship Transposed Into A Pauline Key (Chapter 7 Of Ethics And Ecclesia), Nijay Gupta

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The term 'discipleship' is pervasive in church language, and for good reason since Jesus had disciples and called them to go out and make more disciples. What is particularly interesting about the ecclesial use of the language of discipleship is how it is used by believers to refer to a kind of general Christian category that would align with what academics call 'ethics'. For many churches, denominations, seminaries, and biblical scholars, discipleship is equivalent to Christian obedience to God.1 A cursory look at denominational vision statements will bear this out. The United Methodist Church, for example, claims, 'The church calls …

Veiling With Abjection: Carson Mccullers' Reflections In A Golden Eye, Sarah Beth Gilbert Jan 2016

Veiling With Abjection: Carson Mccullers' Reflections In A Golden Eye, Sarah Beth Gilbert

The Corinthian

I will argue that in Reflections of a Golden Eye, Private Williams is a projection of McCullers, due to his being a representation of the abject desire that McCullers experienced for women, and that the abjection is the very reason why his character comes off as strange, impersonal, and uncanny. Opposing critics would say that Williams’ impersonal nature disqualifies him from being McCullers’ representation; however, while McCullers purposefully uses the uncanny feelings she creates around Williams to distance herself from him, we should see through this.

Whiteness, The Real Intermediary Agent: Harriet E. Wilson’S Medium For Amalgamation In Our Nig; Or, Sketches In The Life Of A Free Black, Hannah Miller

The Corinthian

I intend to present a reading of Wilson’s text that demonstrates when and how she manipulates the voice of her text, only permitting the protagonist, Frado, to speak through her intermediary agent—or medium—the white family that she works for, the Bellmonts.

Mission And Power: History, Relevance, And Perils, Atola Longkumer, Jorgen Skov Sorensen, Michael Biehl Jan 2016

Mission And Power: History, Relevance, And Perils, Atola Longkumer, Jorgen Skov Sorensen, Michael Biehl

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Mission cannot ignore its engagement with power. Christian mission is unavoidably located within matrices of power structures: religion, culture, colonial power, economic and gender. It is not only in the missionary movement largely emanating from the West that Christian mission is linked to structures of power. The Christian communities of today also present significant images, practices, expressions, and sometimes exploitations of power. This volume explores the notion of power in relation to Christian mission and critically engages questions such as: What notions of power have informed mission? How have power structures been negotiated between Christian mission and local culture/religions? Which …

Mission In Central And Eastern Europe: Realities, Perspectives, Trends, Corneliu Constantineanu, Marcel Valentin Măcelaru, Anne-Marie Kool, Mihai Himcinschi

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Central and Eastern Europe is one of the areas of the world that has undergone profound transformations during the 100 years delimited by the two Edinburgh gatherings that inspired the Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series. It is the place in which Marxist ideology gave birth to the Communist hegemony that has impacted the European arena for over 50 years. But this is also the place where Christian Churches experienced God’s grace and provision, and even unexpected flourishing in some quarters. The present volume brings together significant contributions from over thirty theologians, missiologists and practitioners from this part of the world. The …

The Physicist - Philosophers: The Legacy Of James Clerk Maxwell And Herrmann Von Helmholtz, Peter Skiff Jan 2016

The Physicist - Philosophers: The Legacy Of James Clerk Maxwell And Herrmann Von Helmholtz, Peter Skiff

Faculty Books & Manuscripts

One of the most effective, and most mysterious, tools of modern theoretical physics is a mathematical method including what is here called “field theory.” The success of this procedure in unraveling the “zoology” of fundamental particles and their behavior is a marvel. The philosophical context of this marvel is the source of endless academic controversy. The core of the method is a blend of mathematics and description created by “physicist-philosophers,” from Maxwell and Helmholtz to Einstein and Schrödinger. This book tries to unravel the mystery, or at least chronicle it.

Libertarian Welfare Rights? An Inquiry Into The Coherence Of Some Common Libertarian Commitments, Nicole Hassoun Jan 2016

Libertarian Welfare Rights? An Inquiry Into The Coherence Of Some Common Libertarian Commitments, Nicole Hassoun

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

This paper argues that libertarians should endorse some welfare rights understood as rights that all states must guarantee to their subjects as a condition of legitimacy. For, it argues that libertarians, because they should be actual consent theorists, must agree to the following condition for state legitimacy: States must do what they can to ensure that their rights-respecting subjects secure the basic reasoning and planning capacities they need to consent to their rules.

How People Think About Distributing Aid, Nicole Hassoun, Emir Malikov, Nathan Lubchenco Jan 2016

How People Think About Distributing Aid, Nicole Hassoun, Emir Malikov, Nathan Lubchenco

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines how people think about aiding others in a way that can inform both theory and practice. It uses data gathered from Kiva, an online, non-profit organization that allows individuals to aid other individuals around the world, to isolate intuitions that people find broadly compelling. The central result of the paper is that people seem to give more priority to aiding those in greater need at least below some threshold. That is, the data strongly suggest incorporating both a threshold and a prioritarian principle into the analysis of what principles for aid distribution people accept. This conclusion should …

Conserving Nature; Preserving Identity, Nicole Hassoun, D. Wong Jan 2016

Conserving Nature; Preserving Identity, Nicole Hassoun, D. Wong

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Fundamental approaches to environmental ethics currently seem polarized between two broad varieties: the “conservationist” approach on which we should conserve the environment when it is in our interest to do so and the “preservationist” approach on which we should preserve the environment even when it is not in our interest to do so. The first approach obviously has a broader potential audience and is invoked even by preservationists when they seek to marshal the broadest possible support for environmental protection. For preservationists, however, the conservationist approach has obvious limitations. It permits damage to the environment whenever required by the balance …
