In November 2016 I was asked to make a presentation at the Future Oriented Sustainable Design International Conference in Wuhan in the People's Republic of China. My topic was Design Purpose: What is Design? And who is it for?

The presentation examines the wider aspects of design and its categories and asks who were are actually designing for.

I made a powerpoint presentation that I narrated in English whilst it was simultaneously translated into Chinese for the attendees at the conference. On my return to Ireland I created a soundtrack to accompany the presentation slides for people to watch the …

This master’s thesis traces the life and work of L. P. Featherston. He came of age in a time of great consternation for the common agrarian. Featherston forged a political path for himself, wrought with political violence and intimidation. He carried the message of the common man to the Arkansas General Assembly, and fought a fierce political machine on his way to the United States Congress. Fearing for his family’s safety from political foes, Featherston sought great riches in the south Texas railroad industry. In 1922, kitchens in Arkansas looked quite a bit different than they do today. In this same vein, Arkansas kitchens were very different from other contemporary examples on the East coast that have been studied as an archetype for kitchen development nationwide. This project was designed to serve as a primary example of the changes in kitchens in Arkansas. Entitled The Heart of the Home, the project consisted of a tour that featured the kitchen of the Boyle House at 2020 Arch Street. Southern cooking is fluid–ever-changing, influential, and influenced by both Southerners and non-Southerners alike. In this thesis, I explore what constitutes Southern cooking. The foods, cooking methods, and acquisition of foodstuffs and ingredients influence Southerners as cooks and the communities we live in. In the following pages, I’ve connected primary research via interviews with existing literature about Southern foods, cooking, techniques, lifestyles, and cultures. My primary research is derived from authentic interviews with real Southerners. The results from my research are not groundbreaking, but they do serve to help Southerners understand their relationship to and with Southern food and Southern cooking.

This thesis project is a collection of nonfiction essays. The overall theme is rooted in my experience in public schools and my community. I made numerous mistakes during my years in grade and middle school. These issues eventually led me to dropping-out in the ninth-grade. But my problems in the public school system weren’t the only area that I struggled in. I also made reckless choices in my social life. Since drugs and alcohol were common entities in my community, I developed a habit of indulging in them. In spite of these habits and dropping out of school, I overcame. …

This process paper explores the planning and preparation of a non-traditional photo book thesis project on the history of Union County, Arkansas. Beginning with its establishment on November 2, 1829, this project, entitled "Union County’s Historic El Dorado: More Than Black Gold," presents a chronological narrative using primary source photos, postcards, documents, and memorabilia. Textual descriptions relate how the images fit into the history of the region, state, and nation.

Seeing The Forest For The Roads: Auto-Tourism And Wilderness Preservation In Mount Hood National Forest, 1913-64, Taylor Elliott Rose

Between 1913 and 1964, automobile roads appeared throughout the Cascade Mountains around Mount Hood, just east of Portland, Oregon. From elaborate scenic highways to primitive dirt trails, each had its own story. Many of them are gone today, decommissioned and decomposing with the rotting understory soil of the forest. However, some remain as the most utilized spaces in Mount Hood National Forest, one of the most popular public land units for recreation in the country, owned and managed by the United States Forest Service. This study attempted to disentangle the various depictions of Black hair and its fight for social acceptance. The research covered various stigmas associated with natural hair in the African American culture. Several books pertaining to the topic agreed that African Americans suffered from terrible depictions of themselves through various media sources of its era. Advertisements made their mark by preying on those with beauty insecurities. Black-owned businesses also capitalized on African American’s beauty insecurities. Longshoremen's Negotiation Of Masculinity And The Middle Class In 1950s Popular Culture, Tomaro I. Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers mid-20^th century portrayals of working-class longshoremen’s masculinity within the context of emerging middle-class gender constructions. I argue that although popular culture presents a roughly standardized depiction of longshoremen as “manly men,” these portrayals are significantly nuanced to demonstrate the difficulties working-class men faced as they attempted to navigate socio-cultural and socio-economic shifts related to class and the performance of their male gender. Specifically, I consider depictions of longshoremen’s disruptive masculinity, male identity formation, and masculine-male growth as reactions to paradigmatic shifts in American masculinity.
