Book Review: The Divided Mind Of The Black Church: Theology, Piety, And Public Witness, David K. Penno Apr 2016

Book Review: The Divided Mind Of The Black Church: Theology, Piety, And Public Witness, David K. Penno

Faculty Publications

Raphael G. Warnock, senior pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, describes a division in the Black church in the United States that centers on its true mission and purpose. On one side are Black pastors, and on the other are Black theologians. Pastors in the Black church tend to focus on piety and personal salvation (much like evangelicals), whereas Black theologians see the focal point of mission as a liberationist movement to save the culture from racism. Warnock argues for a coming together of the two sides, in order to “more fully integrate …

What Dragons And Hobbits (And Teachers) Have In Common; Or The Evils Of Hoarding: How Tolkien's The Hobbit Informs Classroom Practice, Joy Claire De Aguilar Martinez , '16 Apr 2016

What Dragons And Hobbits (And Teachers) Have In Common; Or The Evils Of Hoarding: How Tolkien's The Hobbit Informs Classroom Practice, Joy Claire De Aguilar Martinez , '16

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

This thesis explores how to teach literature in a way that relies on true internal cognition from students and values their unique responses and identities. This is accomplished through an analyzing the theme of power distribution in Tolkien's The Hobbit alongside the educational theories of Paulo Freire, Maren Aukerman, Louise M. Rosenblatt and Lawrence Sipe to present a more equitable distribution of power when teaching texts within a classroom. The literary analyses work with pedagogical analysis to outline four pedagogical principles that can be used to inform a potential unit on The Hobbit for a 6th grade Language Arts class.

Negotiating A Culture Of Encounter And Disruptive Discourse In Catholic Higher Education, Laura Leming Apr 2016

Negotiating A Culture Of Encounter And Disruptive Discourse In Catholic Higher Education, Laura Leming

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Any brief attention to global, national, and local news underlines the urgency for education that leads to knowledge about and action for the common good. Catholic institutions of higher learning have a dual history of encouraging students to speak and act on behalf of the common good while also pursuing the good life. As those who can readily access a Catholic education have increasingly come from the upper middle class, how are we introducing our students into the culture of encounter that Pope Francis called the U.S. Bishops to promote in September 2015? This essay explores ideas and examples related …

Des Bouches Des Cadiens, Lily Keener Apr 2016

Des Bouches Des Cadiens, Lily Keener

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

This paper explores the current state of Cajun (in French, Cadien) literature in the United States. I describe the migration of the Cajuns from Acadia down to Louisiana, the evolution of the French-Cajun dialect and the longstanding bias against it, and use examples of past and modern day Cajun writers and poets to shed light on the recent resurgence of Cajun culture and literature in the United States, even after years of persecution.
