Plato’S Socrates, Local Hermeneutics, And The Just Community Of Learners: Socratic Dialectic As Inclusive Democratic Discourse, James Magrini
Plato’S Socrates, Local Hermeneutics, And The Just Community Of Learners: Socratic Dialectic As Inclusive Democratic Discourse, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
In previous papers I have brought philosophical hermeneutics in conversation with critical hermeneutics, in order to open the potential for Gadamer’s “moderate hermeneutics” to be re-considered as a potential democratic practice of discourse with the potential of transforming social situations that are unjust and inequitable (Magrini, 2015; 2014). Emerging from this conceptual/theoretical “textual” analysis of philosophical hermeneutics and critical hermeneutics, I offer a reading of the ancient Socratic practice of dialectic as a form of critical, inclusive, and constructive democratic dialogue, i.e., an expression of local normative hermeneutics grounded in a form of understanding that occurs through consensus and negotiation …

Object To Your Affection, Melissa J. Lauro
SURGE
Recently a guy in one of my classes defended objectification of women on the grounds that if he cares for a girl, he will treat her like he treats his most treasured objects; he used his coat as an example. He said that he loved his coat, he wouldn’t let it touch the ground, and he took great care of it; he would do the same for any girl he cared about, for “his girl.” [excerpt]

Flying The X-15 And Space Shuttle, Joe H. Engle
ERAU Prescott Aviation History Program
Hear what it was like for Joe H. Engle, USAF/ANG, Ret. to fly both the X-15 and the Space Shuttle. In 1965 Capt. Engle flew the X-15 to 280,600 feet, to become the youngest pilot to qualify as an astronaut and would go on to fly it 15 more times. Selected for NASA space missions, he flew the Space Shuttle “Enterprise” off the top of a modified 747 on glide flight tests. He commanded the orbital test flight of “Columbia” and became the first and only pilot to manually fly an aerospace vehicle from Mach 25 to landing. A remarkable …

Rhetoric Of The Body: Renaissance Cadaveric Studies And Their Influence In Shakespeare, Leslie Renee Malland
Rhetoric Of The Body: Renaissance Cadaveric Studies And Their Influence In Shakespeare, Leslie Renee Malland
Student Theses and Dissertations
The histories of anatomy and rhetoric are integrally united and date back to the foci upon both by the ancients in Greece and Rome. Though anatomy and rhetoric may seem like they are two different worlds, the same concepts and themes run concurrently throughout the two studies. Rhetors use language to persuade others of what is true while anatomists use bodies to reveal man's truth. Thus, anatomy is nonverbal rhetoric -- communication and knowledge transferred by the body, not by language. The historical accounts of the matron Lucrece and the Roman general Caesar as told by Titus Livy and Plutarch …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 2013, the 55th Venice Biennale, the world's oldest bi-annual international contemporary art exhibition, opened under the title The Encyclopedic Palace, organized by Italian curator Massimiliano Gioni. The international exhibition section is always flanked by an amalgamation of distinct national spaces, a dual exhibition model that has been the hallmark of the Biennale since 1998. In 2013, the United States pavilion was devoted to American artist Sarah Sze's work Triple Point and her signature arrangement of everyday objects and materials, such as Q-tips, water bottles, painter's tape, and desk lamps. The title of Sze's multi-room installation, culled from earlier works …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This Master's Thesis examines what happens when African and Caribbean characters in France or in their own country meet the Other in Francophone literature. How do interracial relationships construct/deconstruct the concept of an intertwined identity? This comparative project explores three 20th century Francophone women writers from Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the West Indies in order to show how their novels construct or deconstruct the identities of migrated female characters through their interracial erotic and amorous relationships. Starting with Plato's Banquet which describes the origin of love as a splitting of identity and the quest of love as a quest …
Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor
Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor
Black & Gold
Locke and Rousseau both emphasize the importance of consent with respect to government and use state of nature arguments to determine what principles would constitute a just society, but each of them comes to a radically different conclusion as to what such a society would look like. Much of this difference is rooted in their differing conceptions of what the purpose of government (and political society generally) is. This paper analyzes the differences between their justifications of government and between the political societies in which those differences result.
Eugenics No Matter What?: An Investigation Of The Eugenic Origin Of Planned Parenthood And Its Effect On Contemporary Society, Sarah Mccrea
Eugenics No Matter What?: An Investigation Of The Eugenic Origin Of Planned Parenthood And Its Effect On Contemporary Society, Sarah Mccrea
Black & Gold
According to Students for Life of America, the reproductive health non-profit known as Planned Parenthood was founded upon the principles of the Eugenics movement. They also argue that Planned Parenthood is still working toward the goals of that movement today. While Planned Parenthood’s ties to the Eugenics movement are clear, it is not necessarily true that the organization’s workers, volunteers, and officers are toiling to achieve century-old eugenic goals in contemporary society. In fact, this hypothesis ignores a piece of the puzzle that is integral to our understanding of why Planned Parenthood facilities are located where they are: the link …
Capitulation Or Resistance? The Response Of The Catholic Church To Nazi Mistreatment Of Jews, Dabo Li
Capitulation Or Resistance? The Response Of The Catholic Church To Nazi Mistreatment Of Jews, Dabo Li
Black & Gold
This essay examines the role of the Catholic Church in the Nazi racial persecution of Jews that culminated in the Final Solution. Recent historical studies have made revealing discoveries despite the steadfast refusal of the Vatican to open up its most important archives. For an institution with higher moral calling, how did the Catholic Church react to the uptick in German anti-Semitism under Adolf Hitler? Using some most up-to-date research findings—as well as its own synthesis—this essay addresses this question by breaking up the Church hierarchy into the institutional and the individual, local levels. It demonstrates that, through a policy …

“There Is A Stubbornness About Me That Never Can Bear To Be Frightened At The Will Of Others”: Constructions Of Beatrice And Elizabeth As The Witty Woman, Tess A. Henthorne
Black & Gold
The ultimate trajectories of characters in literature are often quite similar despite their existence in differing social, cultural, and historical environments. To this end, the following essay will examine Beatrice from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice as related archetypal female heroines. Both women display a similar basic character structure: each proves to be witty, intelligent, and feisty, actively diverging from the passive model female character created by respective female counterparts. Beatrice and Elizabeth are also continuously coupled with a masculine counterpart throughout the texts, and are arguably driven by the actions …
Still A Rivalry: Contrasting Renaissance Sodomy Legislation In Florence And Venice, Nicolaus J. Hajek
Still A Rivalry: Contrasting Renaissance Sodomy Legislation In Florence And Venice, Nicolaus J. Hajek
Black & Gold
The article focuses on comparing the functions of two institutions that castigated sodomy in Renaissance Italy: Florence’s the Office of the Night, and Venice’s Council of Ten. The author analyzes court cases from both Renaissance institutions as well as other first hand accounts of the culture of male sodomy in the region, explaining that Florence’s persecution of homosexual behavior was a secular tool to check the power of any political threat, while Venitian persecution originated from a theological mandate to save sinners from relinquishing their eternal salvation.

Tributo A El Largo Adiós De Raymond Chandler En El Bandido Doblemente Armado De Soledad Puértolas, Paloma Pérez Valdés
Books/Book Chapters
