Spider In The River: A Comparative Environmental History Of The Impact Of The Cache La Poudre Watershed On Cheyennes And Euro-Americans, 1830–1880, John J. Buchkoski
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis is a case study of the Cache la Poudre watershed in Colorado in the mid-nineteenth century and how it contributed to cultural transformations of both Cheyennes and Euro-Americans. This research follows the relationship that developed between Cheyennes and rivers since they inhabited Mille de Lacs in Minnesota in the seventeenth century. It examines the creation of settler-colonialism through the formation of boundaries and colonies in Colorado through the use of rivers. This further illustrates the connectedness of both Euro-Americans and Cheyennes to the rivers and argues that there were battles over these rivers and not only over the …
Karafuto 1945: An Examination Of The Japanese Under Soviet Rule And Their Subsequent Expulsion, Cameron Carson
Karafuto 1945: An Examination Of The Japanese Under Soviet Rule And Their Subsequent Expulsion, Cameron Carson
Honors Theses
When Second World War ended in 1945, the United States of America occupied Japan. Japan’s administrations of its colonies across Asia collapsed and were occupied by the Allied Forces. This thesis examines the Soviet occupation of the area named Karafuto by the Japanese, which is now under the sovereignty of the Russian Federation known as Sakhalin. Karafuto was considered by the Japanese government to be an internal part of Japan, not a colonial territory, but in the last days of the Second World War, Karafuto was invaded by the armed forces of the USSR. Its Japanese occupants were repatriated to …

The Importance of Preserving History: The Conservation of an Edwardian Wedding Dress
This thesis concentrates on the significance of recorded history, and the importance of conserving artifacts such as an Edwardian wedding dress. Such treasured pieces contribute to our perception of the past, not only as artifacts but as an insight into how, why, and by whom, they were created.
The Edwardian period is so important in women’s fashion because it was such a short-lived era. The socio-economic times that preceded the Edwardian era, such as the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era, all had profound impacts which helped influence …

Jo Marries Goethe: Dr. Bhaer As The Goethean Ideal In Louisa May Alcott’S Little Women, Megan Armknecht, Paul Kerry
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In February 2014, I received an ORCA grant to work on my Honors Thesis, “Jo Marries Goethe: Dr. Bhaer as the Goethean Ideal in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.” I had found resonances between Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the character of Dr. Bhaer in Little Women, and I wanted to explore whether these connections held any ground and if I could make a case for Dr. Bhaer as Louisa May Alcott’s representation of the Goethean ideal. I applied for an ORCA grant in order to travel to Harvard to conduct research in Houghton Library’s Special Collections, which …
