The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow
The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Theoretical accounts of genocide and mass atrocity commonly embrace the thesis of norm transformation. This thesis holds, first, that individual and institutional participation in such crimes is at least partially explained by transformations in basic norms that structure social and political life. It holds, second, that preventing future occurrences of such crimes requires changing norms that currently govern the actions of particular individual and institutional actors. This paper clarifies, defends, and extends the thesis of norm transformation. It clarifies this thesis by providing a general account of the nature and dynamics of norms. It defends this thesis against charges of …

Yes Horray! Yes Horray! Yes Horray! For Temperance!: A Relation Of Mining And The Temperance Movement In Joplin, Missouri, Linda Kristina Gooch
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the history of Joplin, Missouri in its development from a mining camp to a boomtown. The solace miners found for their anxieties within Joplin’s saloons demonstrates the community’s willingness to profit from the afflictions of its citizens. City leaders remained indifferent to the circumstances of intemperance because of the revenue generated by liquor license fees and fines for liquor law violations. Prostitution, an activity associated with drinking, provided revenue as women paid fines and returned to work to face fines once again. Madams paid fines for selling liquor from brothels and then continued to serve their clients. …

Causative Constructions In Woirata, Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Nazarudin Nazarudin
Causative Constructions In Woirata, Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Nazarudin Nazarudin
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Woirata (or Oirata, see Van Engelenhoven in this volume) is closely related to Fataluku (Timor-Leste) and belongs to the Timor-Leste subgroup of the Timor-Alor-Pantar language family (TAP) together with Makalero and Makasai (Schapper, Huber, and Van Engelenhoven 2012). It has about 1,566 speakers. Taber (1993) suggests that there are 24 languages in Southwest Maluku of which 23 are Austronesian; Woirata is the only non-Austronesian language in the area. It is interesting to research in how far Woirata has been influenced by Austronesian languages. Because the Woirata and other people who live on Kisar Island, like the Meher, are using Melayu …
The Notion Of "Adjective" In Dhao; A Language Spoken In Eastern Indonesia, Jermy I. Balukh
The Notion Of "Adjective" In Dhao; A Language Spoken In Eastern Indonesia, Jermy I. Balukh
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
It is cross-linguistically defined that adjective is a word category that typically denotes quality and attributes. This category basically falls into semantic properties denoting age, dimension, values, and colours. They also indicate human propensities, physical properties, and speed. Syntactically, adjective typically functions as noun modifiers. However, many adjectives also share features with verbs and/or nouns. This makes adjectives not easy to define. Therefore, morphological and syntactic accounts are required, in addition to semantics, to define the prototypical characteristics of adjectives. This paper has shown that majority of lexemes denoting adjectival properties in Dhao share features with verbs. Although the prefix …

"Kasi" And "Bikin"; Two Causative Strategies In Melayu Tenggara Jauh (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

MTJ encodes causatives by means of MTJ features four periphrastic constructions with the verbs bikin 'do/make' and kasi 'give' that signal whether or not the CAUSER (Kemmer and Verhagen 1994) is involved in or has control over the caused event.

Children's Use Of Bahasa Indonesia In Jakarta Kindergartens, Bernadette Kushartanti, Hans Van De Velde, Martin Everaert
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
At a very young age children living in Jakarta use both Colloquial Jakarta Indonesia and Bahasa Indonesia. The children's first and most used language is Colloquial Jakarta Indonesia. In the formal school setting Bahasa Indonesia is frequently used and stimulated on a daily basis, and the learning process of Bahasa Indonesia is accelerated. The question addressed in this article is: how do these children choose from their repertoire of language varieties at this stage of language development? In our study 63 children (aged three to five), were interviewed in a formal and an informal situation in three playgroups and kindergartens. …

How Higher Education Institutions Utilize Social Media, Shauntel J. Hall
Honors College Theses
Social media is dramatically changing the way that people communicate and interact online. Several businesses have made it a priority to establish a presence on social media to connect with some of its biggest users: millennials. As social media has gained popularity, higher education institutions all around have begun to establish social media platforms in order to interact with current and prospective students and alumni. This study examined how higher education institutions in the University System of Georgia are utilizing social media and also compared use among the various types of institutions (research, comprehensive, state college and state university). A Characterization Of Amarantha, Robert Malsberry
A Characterization Of Amarantha, Robert Malsberry
Manuscripts
Any attempt to characterize the heroine, Arnarantha, must first reveal her environment. One of the most backward sections in North Carolina is the setting, and the reader is made vividly aware of this' typical "Tobacco Road" backdrop. Amarantha is a farm girl-used to farm life and used to handling animals. The simplification of her name to the harsh and ugly "Mare" fully illustrates the crudeness and coarseness she is exposed to from birth. The author emphasizes Amarantha's faulty speech traits, but the reader feels no contempt for her-s-only pity for her lack of a normal educational background. Along with the …

IDLER PAUSED to brush the beads of sweat, worry, from his forehead. He watched as the droplets fell to the dusty road of Life, landing in the footprint of the traveler several yards ahead of him. He studied the footprints, concluding that they were made by a person in great haste. This realization caused a cloud of gloom to pass over Idler's face, for he hated to see anyone in such a predicament. No person in this world can be enjoying himself when he has imbibed that destructive potion, Hurry, as this poor soul has evidently done, he decided...

Why You Should Have A Dictionary, Richard Orman

Think, if you will, what talent might have been given to the world if little Johnnie had had a large unabridged dictionary. With such an aid he might have been able to reach the piano keys. But no, his family had no such helpful device. Alas, he had no way to reach those beautifully noisy keys, and instead of becoming a great, although underpaid, musician, he had to lay bricks and amass great wealth in later life.

ANYONE WHO has been unfortunate enough to venture into one of our glacier-cooled motion picture houses recently has no doubt been forced to the conclusion that our "movies" have not only hit rock bottom, but that they are attempting to burrow through it. The average person, sick unto death of psychiatrist's couches, mother fixations, and planned crimes, may take one of two paths: He may give up movies altogether, or he may turn to foreign pictures and thereby find a rewarding experience free from Betty Grable's legs and Alan Ladd's torso. What is wrong with the American movies? Predominantly three …

ANYONE OF COLLEGE age should be able to write a lengthy essay on irrational behavior, The period of attendance in high school seems to be the most irrational period of life. This is a time when we substitute impulsive behavior for rational action. Adults try to help us reason things out, but we do not like to be reasonable because it spoils our fun and excitement. From this period of adjustment in my life one irrational experience stands uppermost in my mind...

l[lV.'\LHY! vVhat's that? It originally had something to do ~ith horses. The knights of old started it. It also has something to do with courtesy and politeness. Maybe the knights were polite to their horses. It's the only conclusion I can come to. Anyway, chivalry seems to have disappeared. THE WORD INTEGRITY had no definite meaning to me until I read the essay, "The Luxury of Integrity," by Stuart Chase. Moral soundness, honesty, and uprightness were given as definitions in the dictionary. Only through my experiences can I appreciate these meanings. I was reared in a happy home even though it was not blessed with great material wealth. From the first days I can remember, truthfulness and honesty were bywords in my home. The rural area in which I lived provided a never-ending list of chores. T was taught how to do the work required, and, from that time …
The Importance Of Words, Barbara Dunham
The Importance Of Words, Barbara Dunham

ONE OF THE most powerful forces at work in the world today is the ability to speak fluently. So important are words that many scientists believe that language ability is the missing link between man and the ape. So important are words that hundreds of people devote their lives to the study of etymology and to the compilation of more complete and correct dictionaries, and thousands more continually strive to increase and excel in word power. With words alone, one can hurt deeply or heal gently; one can exalt or degrade; one can lead or be led. Used in the …
