CDRH Grant Reports
In the second six months of work on "Image Analysis for Archival Discovery," the project team has continued making strides toward our goal of analyzing more than 7 million newspaper pages in Chronicling America for poetic content. We have hit a few challenging areas in our research and development work, and our work plan has shifted in some ways from that originally set out in our application, but we have implemented these changes with the fundamental goal of performing the major research outlined in our proposal—exploring image analysis as a methodology for discovery in digitized collections of historic materials via …

On Sport and Society
The past few weeks have been full of riveting sport. The Stanley Cup Final proved to be one of the most exciting in several years as no team enjoyed more than a one goal lead until the last few minutes of the final game. The NBA finals were marked by expected and unexpected star performances. The College World Series went down to the final game in the best of three series with Virginia besting Vanderbilt. And continuing this week is the Women’s World Cup which has offered both newcomers and established teams a chance to shine in this world class …
Characteristics Of A Megajournal: A Bibliometric Case Study, C. Sean Burns
Characteristics Of A Megajournal: A Bibliometric Case Study, C. Sean Burns
Information Science Faculty Publications
The term megajournal is used to describe publication platforms, like PLOS ONE, that claim to incorporate peer review processes and web technologies that allow fast review and publishing. These platforms also publish without the constraints of periodic issues and instead publish daily. We conducted a yearlong bibliometric profile of a sample of articles published in the first several months after the launch of PeerJ, a peer reviewed, open access publishing platform in the medical and biological sciences. The profile included a study of author characteristics, peer review characteristics, usage and social metrics, and a citation analysis. We found …

Mystery To History: An Uncommon Way To Teach The Common Core, Reneé C. Lyons, Deborah Parrott
ETSU Faculty Works
With the transition to Common Core, school librarians are called to collaborate with teachers as well as to provide library media instruction for the preparation of our students in college and career readiness. How do we assist our teachers with Common Core instruction while preserving our love of fiction? How do we achieve Common Core Standards in our own instruction while sharing our treasured stories? Although Common Core focuses on informational text, there are numerous ways in which we can incorporate fiction as well as nonfiction into the curriculum.

Willful Understanding: Avicenna’S Philosophy Of Action And Theory Of The Will, Jon Mcginnis, Anthony Ruffus
Willful Understanding: Avicenna’S Philosophy Of Action And Theory Of The Will, Jon Mcginnis, Anthony Ruffus
Philosophy Faculty Works
In this study, we look at two interpretive puzzles associated with the thought of Avicenna that are still of intrinsic philosophical interest today. The first concerns to what extent, if at all, Avicenna’s deity can be said to act freely. The second concerns to what extent, if at all, humans within Avicenna’s philosophical system can be said to act freely. It is our contention that only through a careful analysis of Avicenna’s theory of action can one begin to assess his position concerning the status of the will and so provide a satisfactory response to these two interpretative issues. We …

A Quantitative Approach To Beauty: Perceived Attractiveness Of Human Faces In World Painting., Juan Luis Suárez, Javier De La Rosa
CulturePlex Lab Publications
Has human beauty always been perceived in the same manner? We used a set of 120,000 paintings from different periods to analyze human faces between the 13th and the 20th centuries in order to establish whether there has been a single canon of beauty (that would maximize reproduction probabilities) or whether this has changed over time. Our study shows that when measuring averageness, symmetry, and orientation, the representation of human faces has not remained constant and that there are substantial differences between the faces depicted between the 15th and 18th centuries when compared to those of both the 13th and …

Obama As Visual Icon: Blackness, Post-Raciality, And Multiculturalism In The Neoliberal Age, Jadira Gurulé
Obama As Visual Icon: Blackness, Post-Raciality, And Multiculturalism In The Neoliberal Age, Jadira Gurulé
American Studies ETDs
This thesis examines the body of artwork produced in support of President Barack Obama during the 2008 United States' presidential election. It situates the artistic production from this election as both a product of and tool for furthering discourses of neoliberalism, multiculturalism, post-raciality, and American exceptionalism. A critical focus is trained on the ways in which Obama as a symbol and icon indexes and organizes knowledge about race, gender, sexuality, and national belonging in the United States and examines Obama as a form of visual archive. Visual culture studies, black cultural studies, and critical mixed-race scholarship are central to this …
The Critical Traveler At Palestine/Israel International Border Crossings: Settler Colonialism, Postcolonial Critique, And The United States As A Third State, Farah Nousheen
American Studies ETDs
I use the lens of the "critical traveler" to argue that the international border crossing of Palestine/Israel is both a settler colonial technology for the State of Israel, and a site of resistance for the transnational Palestinian solidarity movement. Israel deems certain travelers as critical to its settler colonial project. Israel marks Palestinian and Muslim travelers as racially critical to Israel that aims to be a Jewish majority state. Israel also marks travelers as critical because it suspects that these travelers espouse critical views of Israel's settler colonialist ideology and practice. As such, Israel has established a border security system …

Stephen Fuller: Jamaican Planter, British Ambassador, Closet Abolitionist, Garrett Nagaishi, Dr. Matthew Mason
Stephen Fuller: Jamaican Planter, British Ambassador, Closet Abolitionist, Garrett Nagaishi, Dr. Matthew Mason
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The 1780s witnessed the rise of abolitionism within the British Empire. In its Two Reports…from the Committee of the Honourable House of Assembly of Jamaica (1788), the Jamaican government, which greatly profited from slavery and the slave trade, responded to claims made against its treatment of slaves. The report attempted to demonstrate by logic and eyewitness testimony that slavery was valuable and consistent with moral principles. Shortly thereafter, Jamaica’s ambassador to British Parliament, Stephen Fuller, published Notes on the Two Reports from the Committee of the Honourable House of Assembly of Jamaica (1789). This tract, which did not contain Fuller’s …
The "Free Road": Indigenous Travel And Rights Of Passage On The Missouri River, Christopher Steinke
The "Free Road": Indigenous Travel And Rights Of Passage On The Missouri River, Christopher Steinke
History ETDs
Well before Lewis and Clark, Native Americans traveled on the Missouri River, crossing it to visit friends and family members, shipping supplies downriver, and conducting visitors toward their villages. Their mobility on the upper Missouri River, an imposing and dangerous continental divide, granted them the power to define rights of passage across the midcontinent. Following the collapse of New Cahokia, Arikara and Mandan settlers pressed up the river valley and established expansive transportation and communication networks that stretched across the Missouri watershed. By 1650 their villages were influential centers of Native North America and places where river crossings held not …
