Lincoln's Dreams: An Analysis Of The Sixteenth President's 'Night Terrors' And Other Chimeras, Lucas R. Somers
Lincoln's Dreams: An Analysis Of The Sixteenth President's 'Night Terrors' And Other Chimeras, Lucas R. Somers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Decades before Freud revealed his revolutionary dream theory, Americans became fascinated with the reported dreams of their greatest hero, Abraham Lincoln. Immediately following Lincoln’s assassination, accounts of his dreams and visions were recorded and made public by those who were close to him during his presidency. This thesis evaluates the three most famous dreams and visions that have been ascribed to Lincoln, as their legitimacy is often doubted. Five additional dreams that are more easily documented are also discussed, and, when taken together, they reveal a significant aspect of Lincoln’s worldview and reflect the complicated nature of belief systems in …

Confessions Of An American Ginseng Addict, Addison Davis James
Confessions Of An American Ginseng Addict, Addison Davis James
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Confessions of an American Ginseng Addict uses the Lazy Branch Holler in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky as a setting for a creative nonfiction work, which uses history, confession, remembrances, and digressions to tell the story of a man dealing with loss, mental health issues, environmental sustainability, and the power of ginseng. In the style of Desert Solitaire and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the narrative is a discursive work of raw unadulterated gonzo writing.
The Nature Of Food: Indigenous Dene Foodways And Ontologies In The Era Of Climate Change, David S. Walsh
The Nature Of Food: Indigenous Dene Foodways And Ontologies In The Era Of Climate Change, David S. Walsh
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Climate change leading to a drastic decline in caribou populations has prompted strict hunting regulations in Canada’s Northwest Territories since 2010. The Dene, a subarctic indigenous people, have responded by turning to tradition and calling for more respectful hunting to demonstrate respectful reciprocity to the caribou, including a community-driven foodways project on caribou conservation and Dene caribou conservation which I co-facilitated in 2011. In these ways the caribou is approached as a person. Dene responses to caribou decline can best be understood by ontological theories of an expanded notion of indigenous personhood. However, I argue these theories are inadequate without …

Partnership for Change (PfC) provides programs and assistance to both urban and rural Myanmar communities to improve the economic and social opportunities for local business and community leaders. An important aspect of the PfC community engagement model is the recognition and support of the arts and culture of the community. In both rural and urban Myanmar, PfC programs for art, music, and cultural literacy and heritage surround the practical skill building efforts, and enhance the vitality of the community. …
Community Building Through Do-It-Yourself Practices & Values In Bangkok's Rock 'N' Roll Subculture, Pablo Ramirez
Community Building Through Do-It-Yourself Practices & Values In Bangkok's Rock 'N' Roll Subculture, Pablo Ramirez
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This article presents the practices and values among members of Bangkok's rock 'n' roll subculture. Understanding a particular manifestation of rock 'n' roll practices, in a specifiscene and location, needs to begin with an analysis of both the similarities and differences it has with other, wider rock 'n' roll subcultural groupings. How do they relate and remain distinct from each other? In order to answer this question, four rock 'n' roll scenes cohabitating in Bangkok city are investigated, they are: metal, punk, hardcore/straightedge and rock. By analyzing the people behind these scenes it is possible to understand the ties and …
