Diamonds In The Rough : Corporate Paternalism And African Professionalism On The Mines Of Colonial Angola, 1917–1975, Todd Cleveland Jul 2015

Diamonds In The Rough : Corporate Paternalism And African Professionalism On The Mines Of Colonial Angola, 1917–1975, Todd Cleveland

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Diamonds in the Rough explores the lives of African laborers on Angola’s diamond mines from the commencement of operations in 1917 to the colony’s independence from Portugal in 1975. The mines were owned and operated by the Diamond Company of Angola, or Diamang, which enjoyed exclusive mining and labor concessions granted by the colonial government. Through these monopolies, the company became the most profitable enterprise in Portugal’s African empire. After a tumultuous initial period, the company’s mines and mining encampments experienced a remarkable degree of stability, in striking contrast to the labor unrest and ethnic conflicts that flared in other …

Women’S Tanci Fiction In Late Imperial And Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo Jul 2015

Women’S Tanci Fiction In Late Imperial And Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo

Comparative Cultural Studies

In Women’s Tanci Fiction in Late Imperial and Early Modern China, Li Guo presents the first book-length study in English of women’s tanci fiction, the distinctive Chinese form of narrative written in rhymed lines during the late imperial to early modern period (related to, but different from, the orally performed version also called tanci) She explores the tradition through a comparative analysis of five seminal texts. Guo argues that Chinese women writers of the period position the personal within the diegesis in order to reconfigure their moral commitments and personal desires. By fashioning a “feminine” representation of subjectivity, …

"The Avalanche" : A Cantata For Mezzo-Soprano, Flute, Viola, And Harp, Lily Breshears Jul 2015

"The Avalanche" : A Cantata For Mezzo-Soprano, Flute, Viola, And Harp, Lily Breshears

University Honors Theses

"The Avalanche" by James Laughlin was originally written as two poems, "The Avalanche" and "The Shape of Love," then published as one in 1945. It unfolds the turmoil one faces with a new love and a looming past. I set the poem to music in four movements with an instrumental prelude for mezzo-soprano, flute, viola, and harp, thus making my piece a cantata, which is typically defined as a work for one or more voices and orchestral accompaniment in multiple movements that divide a single text. Although seemingly counterintuitive, the decision to have the text delivered by a mezzo-soprano was …

Faces Of The Civil War, Steven J. Semmel Jul 2015

Faces Of The Civil War, Steven J. Semmel

Blogging the Library

As the internship enters its final month of the summer, I’ve been processing and looking at various Civil War collections. This era in history is well known for the bloody conflicts that separated the nation. However, not much is known about most individuals that fought in different regiments across the country, or even what they looked like. Special Collections is home to a few faces that at Gettysburg, out West, prisoners at Andersonville, or stationed in places like Florida. The collections I have recently processed included photos of those soldiers at different stages in their life. [excerpt]

Making A Statement: The Alabama Memorial At Gettysburg, Matthew D. Laroche

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This post is part of a series featuring behind-the-scenes dispatches from our Pohanka Interns working on the front lines of history this summer as interpreters, archivists, and preservationists. See here for the introduction to the series.

Every generation has plenty to remember about its time spent shaping the human story. But despite this, some generations are better at writing their stories than others. Or perhaps some generations leave more unfinished work for their descendants to sift through. Either way, the legacy of the Civil War still lays heavy on our shoulders. Here at Gettysburg, in particular, the memory of the …

Would You Impugn My Justice? A Nuanced Approach To The Hebrew Bible's Theology Of Divine Recompense, Joel Kaminsky Jul 2015

Would You Impugn My Justice? A Nuanced Approach To The Hebrew Bible's Theology Of Divine Recompense, Joel Kaminsky

Religion: Faculty Publications

Recent scholarship has tended to see the book of Job as sweeping away an earlier, mechanistic theology of divine recompense. This essay argues that the widespread biblical notion that God rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked is more complex than generally recognized and that recovering its nuances not only helps one better understand the theological outlook of books like Deuteronomy, Proverbs, and Psalms, but also helps one better grasp the debates within Job. The essay is framed by some reflections on why our contemporary culture regularly misreads the Bible's language of divine retribution in spite of the fact that …

First Person, Noah Balazs Jul 2015

First Person, Noah Balazs

Colby Magazine

It was early morning on the Tabaski holiday in Senegal, where I recently taught first grade at the International School of Dakar. At the home of Almamy Badiane, his sisters and sisters-in-law made preparations for a feast that would last all day and into the night. Venturing into the outdoor kitchen with my dusty Holga medium-format camera, I was not unwelcome, but I knew my place as a guest was beside the host. My own plastic chair was waiting. The result was this image, which appears in a new book of short stories set in West Africa, Everything Is Insha'Allah …
