African-Americans And The Administration Of Justice, E. Yvonne Moss, Roy Austin, Nolan Jones, Barry Krisberg, Hubert Locke, Michael Radelet, Susan Welch Dec 2015

African-Americans And The Administration Of Justice, E. Yvonne Moss, Roy Austin, Nolan Jones, Barry Krisberg, Hubert Locke, Michael Radelet, Susan Welch

Barry A Krisberg

The status of African Americans in relationship to the administration of justice has improved since the 1940s. Significantly, however, researchers continue to find racial discrimination and racial disadvantage operating in various aspects of the criminal justice process in numerous jurisdictions. Such findings are unacceptable in a society that claims to honor equal justice under law.

This article is reprinted from Summary, Volume 1 of the Assessment of the Status of African-Americans series, published in 1990 by the William Monroe Trotter Institute, University of Massachusetts at Boston, and edited by Wornie L. Reed. Materials included in the article were adapted …

Pathways To Power: Physicians In Charleston, South Carolina, 1790-1860, David Brown Dec 2015

Pathways To Power: Physicians In Charleston, South Carolina, 1790-1860, David Brown

David C. Brown

This dissertation tells of the efforts of a group of scientifically trained physicians in Charleston, South Carolina to gain power and authority within their profession, and their community, during the Antebellum Period. Physicians were not ultimately able to declare professional supremacy and near monopolistic authority in health care until scientists discovered microscopic pathogens during the bacteriological revolution of the last half of the nineteenth century. This work begins with a brief review of the medical history of Charleston and its physicians and recounts the difficulties faced as they tried to establish themselves as medical authorities in a new world. The …

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith Dec 2015

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.

Extra-Textual, Intra-Textual, And Neo-Baroque Constructions Of Violent Space In Three Women Writers From The Southern Cone, Gail Bulman Dec 2015

Extra-Textual, Intra-Textual, And Neo-Baroque Constructions Of Violent Space In Three Women Writers From The Southern Cone, Gail Bulman

Gail A. Bulman

The purpose of this dissertation is to use feminist theories, semiotics, and current theories on the Neo-Baroque, to analyze the way in which three 1970's and 1980's Latin American women writers from the Southern Cone configure artistic space, in order to reveal how their representations of space reflect the poly-dimensional nature of violence. In each of the texts presented, (Informacion para extranjeros by Argentine Griselda Gambaro, Una pasion prohibida by Uruguayan Cristina Peri Rossi, and Por la patria by Chilean Diamela Eltit), the intra-textual space carries extra-textual signification in its representation of the local political and cultural violence of the …

The Irish Novel At The End Of The Twentieth Century: Gender, Bodies, And Power, Jennifer Jeffers

Jennifer M. Jeffers

This text interprets a wide range of Irish novels of the 1990s, focusing on the regulated sexual and constructed gendered body. It looks at how identities do, or don't, conform to familiar notions of sexuality, gender and culture and goes on to say that Irish identity is a matter of economics.
