Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “My Warszawa: 1980” follows the journey of well-respected academician Judith Horne as she travels to and within Poland to participate in an international conference on American culture. She has a vague connection to Poland, with remote family members who were killed in Auschwitz and a Jewish ancestry that can be seen in her features, but she considers these facts unimportant to who she is at the moment. Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2958. Correspondence of two related Bath County, Kentucky families. A lonesome Sarah L. Boyd writes to her mother, Elizabeth A. “Lizzie” Rogers, from boarding school in Fleming County, Kentucky in 1865, where she discusses having her photograph taken, “hateful” schoolmates, and provisions from her family of clothing, whiskey and bitters. In the 1880s, Ida Lee Bell receives letters from cousins, friends and suitors with family news and local gossip. One of her letters voices disapproval of young men who drink when calling on ladies. The letters mention many family members by first name.

Two decades before the Irish Brigade covered itself with glory, an earlier unit of Irish immigrants had won renown for its service during the Mexican American War. Calling themselves the Saint Patrick’s Battalion, these men marched under a flag of brilliant emerald decorated with Irish motifs: a harp, a shamrock, and the image of Saint Patrick [excerpt].

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have read Acts 19:1-20 as a combination of stories serving different thematic interests. This has led to much confusion over several details in the text, and readings that follow this pattern miss the larger point Luke is making in this section. Acts 19:1-20 serves as the final scene in a three-part contest between believers and magicians (Acts 8:4-25; 13:4-12; 19:1-20). When one takes Acts 19:1-7 as a part of the larger narrative structure in 19:1-20, one can read the Ephesian disciples as the literary foils of the sons of Sceva. Jack Blanco was born in Chicago in 1929 from immigrant parents Frederick Ross, from Austria, and Katherine Kiessling, from Germany. During the planning of the wedding, Jack Blanco’s father left his mother Katherine, she was already pregnant. Due to this circumstance, he was raised by his single mother, who worked in sweatshops and he was the only child growing up. He was left with various babysitters who he claims abused him during his mother’s absence. His life changed forever at the age of ten when he and his mother decided to visit his grandparents in Germany.

Horizon is a new work for seven dancers centered around the idea of density. In this piece I endeavored to add as much as possible to the space in terms of dancers and movement. With multiple phrases occurring simultaneously, the dance takes the form of a constantly shifting universe full of activity. glacier, my preceding work was an exercise of stripping away in an effort to reduce movement to its least possible form. "This chapter focuses on The Phantom of the Opera, the megamusical that perhaps most boldly faces the idea of disability head-on, as it stars a character whose face, as one journalist described it, looks 'like melted cheese' (Smith, 1995). The musical's approach to the Phantom's disability is remarkably layered and inconsistent; the Phantom is portrayed in numerous ways (monster, criminal, genius, god, ghost) and his physical disability blurs regularly with his 'soul;' which is where numerous characters locate the origin of his problems. Nursing presence, although it involves action at times, is a humanitarian quality of relating to a patient that is known to have powerful and positive implications for both nurse and patient. However, this phenomenon has not been well understood. Three theories, drawn from the work of Paul Ricoeur and Hans-Georg Gadamer, served as the boundaries for both data collection and analysis. The theories were narrative identity, play and solicitude. This study follows a critical hermeneutic approach to field research and data analysis. Literature regarding nursing presence is reviewed and discussed, and in-depth conversations with eleven participants are recorded. Examining the …

More than four hundred years after his death Shakespeare is still the most performed playwright in the English-Speaking World, and even in some cultures vastly different from Shakespeare’s England. Theatre companies continue to make him relevant by exploring new themes and tailoring the productions to the social mores of contemporary audiences. One particular theme being examined more and more by both scholars and theatre artists is diversity and the role of identity in Shakespeare’s works.
