Why Do Girls Stay Silent? An Exploratory Research On Young Women's Tolerance Toward Stranger Harassment, Sui Lau Sep 2015

Why Do Girls Stay Silent? An Exploratory Research On Young Women's Tolerance Toward Stranger Harassment, Sui Lau

Lingnan Theses

Stranger harassment has been a rising issue regarding gender equality globally. Nevertheless, this issue has been rarely explored in Hong Kong. This study aims at discovering its prevalence, the frequency of its occurrences, local women’s reactions toward it and variables that may determine women’s reactions in a local context. Both personal qualities, including gender-related belief, self-objectification and body image, as well as situational qualities, namely perceived situational norms, are examined.

350 self- administered questionnaires were collected from local women aged between 18 and 25, in either pencil-and-paper or online forms. Results showed that more than 80% of respondents reported experiencing …

Fong Wong Sep 2015

Fong Wong

Lingnan Theses

The Exclusion Problem And Counterfactual Theories Of Causation, Yee Hang Sze Sep 2015

The Exclusion Problem And Counterfactual Theories Of Causation, Yee Hang Sze

Lingnan Theses

Jaegwon Kim famously challenged non-reductive materialism/physicalism (NRM), a popular stance in the philosophy of mind, with the so-called exclusion argument. The argument is alleged to show that if NRM is true, then mental properties cannot be causes. In recent years, there have been many reactions to the exclusion problem based on counterfactual accounts of causation. In particular, List and Menzies gave an interesting response based on a Lewis-style counterfactual theory of causation, with some modifications made to Lewis’s semantics of counterfactuals. In this thesis, I first argue that their central thesis regarding the issue of exclusion can actually be established …

I Xuan Chong Sep 2015

I Xuan Chong

Lingnan Theses

Anti-Theory And Theory: A Study Of F. R. Leavis's Concept Of Criticism, Xiangchun Meng Sep 2015

Anti-Theory And Theory: A Study Of F. R. Leavis's Concept Of Criticism, Xiangchun Meng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

F. R. Leavis's critical practice has been habitually and conveniently labeled as anti-theoretical. His debate with Rene Wellek in the 1930s on "literature vs. philosophy" was a proof to his aversion to rigid theory and abstraction. Leavis maintained that literary criticism in practice should engage itself with elements such as human nature, life, morality and reality, which led to the labeling of him as a "practical critic." What Leavis was against in the so-called "anti-theory" is essentially the routinization, dogmatism and abstraction in literary criticism practice, and Leavis held up to the empirical tradition of literary criticism, emphasizing on literariness …

Body, Aesthetics And Politics: On Eagleton's View Of Body, Wei Wang Sep 2015

Body, Aesthetics And Politics: On Eagleton's View Of Body, Wei Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Terry Eagleton's discourse on body tries to reconnect body with traditional political themes such as state governance, class contradictions and the mode of production. Researchers on the theoretical sources of his body discourse — the body of labor, the body of power, and the body of desire — often overlooks his ambitions to rebuild the rational and the political, and his commentaries on bodies under discipline, in carnival, in pain, or in terror. In this context, he emphasizes that the prevailing discourse of postmodern body is a product of failed politics of class and he accuses the discourse of over-emphasis …

Boundless Appropriation And In-Depth Exploration: New Developments In International "Bakhtin Studies" In The 21StCentury, Qichao Zhou Sep 2015

Boundless Appropriation And In-Depth Exploration: New Developments In International "Bakhtin Studies" In The 21StCentury, Qichao Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper starts with a survey of the major achievements of international Bakhtin studies in the 21st century, and summarizes that Bakhtinian theory as an academic fad is no longer en vogue. However, the theoretical radiation of his theory has entered a state of "the new normal" in its cross-cultural journey, which shows in the scholarly exchange in scholarly academic circle and the regular International Bakhtin Conference. In particular, scholars from Russian Academy of Sciences have been annotating and commenting Bakthin's oeuvre in detail and conducting in-depth explorations into Bakhtin's theoretical heritage. Internationally, Bakhtin's works have been published in different …

Lyricism And The Age: The Debate Over The Function Of The New And The Old Poetic Forms And Its Significance In The Modern China, Jianwei Pan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

An important goal of the New Literature is to reflect the social politics of the age, while lyricism is also an issue for the New Poetry. The debate over the merits of the new and old forms is one of the key issues in the New Culture Movement. Putting the debate into the perspective of the relation between poetry and the age, the paper approaches the issue by examining the differences between the function of lyricism pertaining to the new and old forms of poetry, the reason behind the forms and the influence of the choices on the forms, and …

On The Idea Of Coercive Interpretation, Yang Lu Sep 2015

On The Idea Of Coercive Interpretation, Yang Lu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

A remarkable event in 2014 Chinese literary criticism was the concept of coercive interpretation proposed by Prof. Zhang Jiang. Coercive interpretation aimed at a theoretical summarization from Chinese perspective of the 20th-century Western mainstream literary theories, especially the various postmodern criticism since 1970s, and it could have the potentials to be Chinese discourse's intervention in the value judgment of Western literary theories. However, coercive interpretation was conceptualized out of the discursive context of and devoid of the support of literary texts. Instead, it resorted to a preset standpoint to interpret texts. This exhibits on the one hand the internal limitation …

On Yu Yan's Poetic Thoughts, Shuzhen Yue Sep 2015

On Yu Yan's Poetic Thoughts, Shuzhen Yue

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The poetic theory of Yu Yan, a Ci-poetry theorist from the Ming Dynasty, is mainly presented in his Commentaries on Ci-Poetry from Yuan Garden, in which he claimed that shi-poetry, ci-poetry and qu-poetry had the same origin with ci-poetry as an indispensable developmental phase in literature along the musical aspect. He maintained that ci-poetry declined due to the loss of music for which ci-poetry functioned as the lyrics. He also demonstrated the different tastes of the Northern Song and the Southern Song Dynasties and examined the thematic approaches, styles and compositions in different forms of ci- and qu-poetry. It could …

Passion And Politics In Revolution: A Psychoanalytical Reading Of Ding Ling, Ban Wang, Xiaohua Cao Sep 2015

Passion And Politics In Revolution: A Psychoanalytical Reading Of Ding Ling, Ban Wang, Xiaohua Cao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Psychoanalysis, a historically evolving discourse, has the radical and socially transformative potential. By addressing the sex centered mode in psychoanalytical criticism and by tracing certain fraught moments in Ding Ling's fiction, this paper suggests that private love can be an integral part of collective solidarity, that unconscious drives can propel the impulse for social change, and that libidinal energy can fuel political passion and collective action. Clarifying the concept of "sublimation", and analyzing "positive sublimation" process in which libidinal energy turns into political passion, this paper will challenge the rigid separation of libidinal life from social commitment, love from politics, …

The Concept Of Nature's Aid In The Literary Creation Of The Womanhood Poetics In The Qing Dynasty, Qingxiu Song Sep 2015

The Concept Of Nature's Aid In The Literary Creation Of The Womanhood Poetics In The Qing Dynasty, Qingxiu Song

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The Nature's Aid in the literary creation is an important concept of the womanhood poetics in the Qing Dynasty literary criticism. Women's literary works resulted from the garden walks, sightseeing trips, and mind travels had all exhibited Liu Xie's literary concept of Nature's Aid. Literary women from Han-Dynasty traveling women to landscape-loving Qing-Dynasty women, due to Nature's Aid, could enrich their literary creation with profounder significance. Literary women in ancient China had promoted feminist literature by integrating feminine quality into their literary creation and developing a unique womanhood poetics.

Love, Charity, & Pope Leo Xiii: A Leadership Paradigm For Catholic Education, Henry J. Davis Sep 2015

Love, Charity, & Pope Leo Xiii: A Leadership Paradigm For Catholic Education, Henry J. Davis

Journal of Catholic Education

The treatment of workers is an ongoing social issue affecting society. No organization is immune to questionable employee practices, including Catholic educational institutions. For Catholic leadership to fully embody its intended justice-based role, it must first be aware of the social teachings put forth by the Roman Catholic Church. In this study, the researcher suggests Pope Leo XIII’s social writings as a guiding presence for beginning this formation, starting with the concepts of love and charity within labor. The analysis of Leo’s work shows love and charity as interchangeable virtues that enhance our God-given dignity by acknowledging other people’s inherent …

The Crisis Of Self-Understanding In Dostoevsky, Joshua Miller Sep 2015

The Crisis Of Self-Understanding In Dostoevsky, Joshua Miller

The Kabod

This paper seeks to explain the characterization of Raskolnikov in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. It makes the argument that Raskolnikov exemplifies the inexhaustible depth of the human consciousness, the quest for self-understanding, and the radical schism of the psyche which Dostoevsky wrote about in other works such as Notes From Underground. Contrasting Crime and Punishment with Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, this paper concludes that Conrad's main character Marlow loses himself in the schism and that Raskolnikov finds peace through confession and repentance.

Narrating Jane: Telling The Story Of An Early African American Mormon Woman, Quincy D. Newell Sep 2015

Narrating Jane: Telling The Story Of An Early African American Mormon Woman, Quincy D. Newell

Arrington Annual Lecture

Jane Elizabeth Manning James was among the early African American converts to Mormonism. After joining the church in the early 1840s, James remained a faithful member until her death in Salt Lake City in 1908. Although she was well-known among church members during her lifetime, James was largely forgotten after her death. However, beginning in about 2000, there was a significant up-tick in non-academic LDS discourse about James. Dr. Newell will analyze this recent talk about Jane, showing that she has become a way for Latter-day Saints to talk about both gender and race in ways that create a usable …

China's Nine-Dashed Map: Continuing Maritime Source Of Geopolitical Tension, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The South China Sea (SCS) is becoming an increasingly contentious source of geopolitical tension due to its significance as an international trade route, possessor of potentially significant oil and natural gas resources, China’s increasing diplomatic and military assertiveness, and the U.S.’ recent and ongoing Pacific Pivot strategy. Countries as varied as China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and other adjacent countries have claims on this region’s islands and natural resources. China has been particularly assertive in asserting its SCS claims by creating a nine-dash line map claiming to give it de facto maritime control over this entire region without regard to …
