ABSTRACT This thesis discusses Victorian notions of respectability at death and burial as they are portrayed in Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, Middlemarch, and The Nether World. Because such notions are, by nature, fluid in that the death of an individual is spread across a canvas of public ritual, the novel provides a better way than newspaper accounts or diaries to bring together divergent and competing perspectives to form a more complete account of respectability's meaning for Victorians. The purpose of this paper is to examine the state differences in arrest rates according to risk preference, and policy and sanction severity. The effects of policy and sanction severity on drinking and driving have been an increasing topic of discussion and study in both the political and scholarly world since the 1980s. This paper seeks to address the differences in state-level policies and sanctions concerning DUIs, focusing on the impact of punishment severity on DUI arrest rates. Results show that being located in the Western region of the United States has a significant positive effect on DUI arrest rates. …

This thesis examines three visionary women who were instrumental in founding the Museum of Modern Art in 1929: Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, and Mrs. Cornelius Sullivan. In reaction to the lack of modern art in New York City’s museums, these women combined their collections, money, and resources to present Matisses, Picassos, and other modern masters to create what would become the core of the museum’s permanent collection. Teenage drivers, ages 16 to 19, account for about 16.8% of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) in the United States, even though teenagers only represent about 4.4% of the United States population. Several factors increase teenagers’ risk for MVCs including: lack of driving experience, poor ability to identify and anticipate hazards, lack of sensitivity to road complexity and conditions, and increased willingness to take risks. Research has also suggested the importance of parental influences on risky teenage driving. PART I. Mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) cause the lethal genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF). The most common CF-causing mutation is the deletion of F508 (F508del) in its N-terminal nucleotide binding domain (NBD1), which causes CFTR misfolding and premature degradation. By studying the in vitro thermal unfolding of the isolated NBD1 ± F508del using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we show that F508del significantly reduces the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of NBD1. We propose that the non-native contact between the partially denatured F508del-NBD1 and other domains may cause the misfolding of F508del-CFTR. This work …

α-Synuclein (αS) is a cytosolic protein expressed at high levels in the human brain and concentrated in presynaptic nerve terminals. Although the precise nature of αS in vivo remains unclear, the aggregation of αS, from its soluble, functional forms into highly organized amyloid fibrils, has been substantially implicated in the pathology of a number of neurodegenerative diseases collectively known as synucleinopathies. The long-term goal of this project is to understand the molecular mechanisms that initiate αS oligomerization in aqueous solution. Eviner’s work centralizes issues of gender in Turkish culture, the history of colonialism, and how historical location informs society at large. Eviner lives and works in Turkey, but exhibits internationally. Harem has been exhibited in Turkey, France, and England. Ultrathin temperature-responsive hydrogels offer fast (in a matter of seconds) response to external stimuli and precise control over the hydrogel composition that has proven to be extremely important for bio-related applications and sensing. These hydrogels can typically uptake ~ 90% of water by volume and are capable of drastic and reversible volume change in response to applied stimuli which makes them ideal candidates to host and deliver small molecules and proteins. The multilayer hydrogels are fabricated by first covalently cross-linking hydrogen-bonded layer-by-layer (LBL) films that serve as templates for hydrogel assembly. This paper explores the mediating mechanisms between internet use and depression among African Americans and Caribbean Blacks. The hypotheses are that emotional support and online support groups (OSGs) mediate the association between internet use and depression. Data come from the National Survey of American Life conducted between 2001 and 2003 that includes a nationally representative sample of African Americans and Black respondents of Caribbean descent (N=4771). Depression is measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale with 12 questions. Internet use is measured as frequency of use. While Kratom has been used for centuries by Thai laborers, it has recently been offered as a legal high by online markets and local head shops. Important considerations for the development of sea urchin aquaculture will include understanding nutrition and feed management. These reported investigations contribute to knowledge of dietary protein and carbohydrate requirements in Lytechinus variegatus and feed management strategies. The first evaluation of economic feasibility of sea urchin aquaculture as related to feed costs is presented and the geometric framework (GF) to assess nutrient intake targets is first applied to cultured aquatic organisms to yield recommendations for nutrient balancing in formulated urchin feed. Plasma cortisol concentrations obtained directly after the Trier Social Stress test are negatively associated with subsequent pain tolerances during the cold pressor task (CPT) among healthy non-Hispanic whites (NHWs), but not healthy African Americans (AAs). It is possible frequent exposure to perceived discrimination, a marker of chronic stress, explains this lack of association between cortisol regulation and pain tolerances among AAs. Most previous research on authorship attribution (AA) assumes that the training and test data are drawn from the same distribution. But in real scenarios, this assumption is too strong. Because of domain mismatches, the AA approaches that perform well on same domain scenarios will degrade performance in cross-domain settings. The goal of this research is to improve the prediction results in cross-domain AA (CDAA), where there is no training data available from the target domain. Dog-bite injuries pose a significant threat to children around the world. School-aged children are especially at risk of injuries because of their cognitively immature tendency toward poor perception of vulnerability regarding risky behaviors. This risk is elevated further for millions of school-aged children living in rural China due to the large number of stray dogs, all potential rabies carriers. Effective intervention programs for pediatric dog-bite injuries are sparse. Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive deadly pleural cancer overexpressing Ephrin A2 receptors which are biomarkers for malignant mesothelioma. The Ephrin A1 ligand binding to the Ephrin A2 receptor downregulates overexpression of the Ephrin A2 in malignant mesothelioma cells (MMC). Similarly, the YSA peptide can mimic the Ephrin A1 ligand and both could be suitable as targeting agents and tumor suppressing agents for MMC. In this work, we conjugated the surface of nanoparticles with the YSA peptide and Ephrin A1 ligand to deliver paclitaxel with low solubility by targeting the MMC. Providing Relevant And Effective Leadership For Millennials, Valorie Cannon Nordbye

This thesis surveyed the leadership style preference of Millennials. Other areas focused on their loyalty to bosses, the importance of a company’s values and social practices, and their preferences about working independently or collaboratively. Members of an American college ministry were surveyed using an online survey tool. Based on 261 surveys, 85 percent chose servant leadership as their preferred style. The majority indicated that the values and social practices of their employer were important to them and that they would leave a job to remain with a boss they liked. There was no clear preference on working collaboratively or independently.

Evangelicalism is the fastest growing religious movement in Kenya, a country that already has Africa’s largest percentage of evangelicals overall. This makes it imperative to promote authentic leadership in Kenyan churches. But the concept of leadership development there is overlooked, and as a result churches suffer from a lack of authentic leaders. A number of attempts have been made to construct a plausible ontology of rock music. Each of these ontologies identifies a single type of ontological entity as the “work” in rock music. Yet, all the suggestions advanced to date fail to capture some important considerations about how we engage with music of this tradition. This prompted Lee Brown to advocate a healthy skepticism of higher-order musical ontologies.
