The Ethics Of Food, Fuel & Feed, Brian G. Henning

As the collective impact of human activity approaches Earth's biophysical limits, the ethics of food become increasingly important. Hundreds of millions of people remain undernourished, yet only 60 percent of the global harvest is consumed by humans, while 35 percent is fed to livestock and 5 percent is used for biofuels and other industrial products. This essay considers the ethics of such use of edible nutrition for feedstock and biofuel. How humanity uses Earth's land is a reflection of its values. The current land-use arrangements, which divert 40 percent of all food to feed animals or create fuels, suggest that …

Those specializing in certain parts of the world, for example, can join the North American Conference on British Studies (founded in 1950), the British Association for American Studies (1955), the African Studies Association (1957), or a host of other groups. As I promote the services that our writing center offers to faculty members across disciplines, I always try to be careful of the language I use to discuss exactly what it is we do in our writing center. I know the perceptions: the writing center will help you with your grammar or the writing center will help you fix your paper. Our goal, I try to emphasize to faculty members, is not to help your students fix their papers; our goal is to help them become better writers.

This study addresses the problem of gender hostility on a STEM-focused university campus. I engage with current debates over the definition and purpose of feminism, in order to argue for the necessity of feminist activism in engineering education, with a particular focus on applications for Michigan Tech. Theoretically, I locate gender hostility in a long-running rejection of “the feminine” in STEM-based ways of knowing, curricula, and academic institutions. Drawing on Dorothy Smith’s conceptualization of “ruling relations,” I trace the discursive construction of femininity and the masculine/feminine dichotomy as seen in institutional forms, web pages, and student writing on social media. …

The demand for consumer goods in the developing world continues to rise as populations and economies grow. As designers, manufacturers, and consumers look for ways to address this growing demand, many are considering the possibilities of 3D printing. Due to 3D printing’s flexibility and relative mobility, it is speculated that 3D printing could help to meet the growing demands of the developing world. While the merits and challenges of distributed manufacturing with 3D printing have been presented, little work has been done to determine the types of products that would be appropriate for such manufacturing.

Rooted in critical scholarship this dissertation is an interdisciplinary study, which contends that having a history is a basic human right. Advocating a newly conceived and termed, Solidarity-inspired History framework/practice perspective, the dissertation argues for and then delivers a restorative voice to working-class historical actors during the 1916 Minnesota Iron Ore Strike. Utilizing an interdisciplinary methodological framework the dissertation combines research methods from the Humanities and the Social Sciences to form a working-class history that is a corrective to standardized studies of labor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This project argues that Missouri’s singular position as a border state not only between the North and South, but also between the East and West shaped the state’s Civil War experience as well as its memory of the conflict. During the Civil War, Missouri was a slaveholding border state on the western frontier and home to a diverse and divided population. Neither wholly Union nor Confederate, Missouri’s Civil War was bitterly divisive. In its aftermath, Missourians struggled to come to terms with what it had been about. Doubling And Multiplying The Self/Story In Catherynne M. Valente's The Ice Puzzle: Readers, Writers, And The Best Of All Girls, Veronica Schanoes

Is there a difference between the doubled self and the multiplied self? Using Kelly Link’s “The Girl Detective,” a revision of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” and Catherynne M. Valente’s online novel The Ice Puzzle, a revision of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” I suggest that the joy taken in the multiplied self in these texts reflects the nontraditional approaches to publishing and their readers that these authors have taken.

Roads To Progress: Public Perceptions Of Highway Construction In Peru, 1920–30, Mark Rice

This paper, presented at the AHA/CLAH Annual Meeting in 2015 examines how Peruvians viewed the ongoing construction of roads in the early twentieth century. I argue that public support for road construction stemmed from the perception that such infrastructure would economically and culturally modernize Peru.

From Michel de Montainge’s essay “Of Friendship” to Jacques Derrida’s rearticulation of the former in The Politics of Friendship, scholars both early modern and modern have sought ways to address the fluid co-mixture of bodies from which the discourse of friendship can and does emerge. More recently still, new materialist thinkers of ontology have begun to shift our attention to the ways both human and nonhuman bodies inter-animate in the making of political, interpersonal, and artistic life worlds. This thesis argues that Dorothy Allison’s work—and specifically the women who hate me (1983), Trash (1988), and Skin: Talking about Sex, Class, and Literature (1994)—explores the unexpected alliances and radical difference and desire produced by interactions between fatness, queerness, and “white trashiness” on the terrain of late-twentieth-century representational and lived southern culture, and specifically how queer and “white trash” embodiments are both legible in terms of fatness, much in the way that gravy thickens in Allison’s writing to envelop and signify simultaneously lack and excess, shame and ecstasy, disgust and desire, and difference and community. 阮大鋮是明代著名的戲曲作家，著有《春燈謎》、《燕子箋》、《雙金榜》、《牟尼合》等傳奇戲曲，極富才華。然而，明朝和明季的史書裏，阮大鋮品格卑劣；除此之外，一些文學家亦大力渲染阮大鋮負面形象。因此本文欲分析史書與文學如何建構阮大鋮的形象。

本論文分作五部份︰第一為引言。第二則以《明史》、《石匱書后集》、《小腆紀傳》及《所知錄》四部史書的作者生平、筆法分析阮大鋮的歷史原型。第三部份則細讀《樵史通俗演義》、《桃花扇》、《姑妄言》、〈阮大鋮祭文〉四部文學作品，並從作者生平、寫作意圖方式探究阮大鋮的文學形象。第四部份會比較歷史原型與文學形象之異同，及研究其關係，並了解兩者之間如何互相影響，建構出阮大鋮於社會形象。第五部份為結語。

香港「戰後嬰兒」經歷1966年天星小輪加價示威、1967年暴動，眼見當時市民生活質素追不上發展速度，開始對殖民地政府提出不滿，成為「躁動的一代」。六十年代的反叛在七十年代則發展為「對抗的一代」。當六十年代的年青人逐漸成為主導的消費者，他們的本土意識隨之走進主流，為他們服務的流行文化產品亦愈多回應社會狀況，延續「對抗性」的自覺。

於六十至七十年代紅極一時的依達，其作品多次被改編為電影，反映當時香港流行文學與電影之緊密互動。他亦是香港都市言情小說的先驅，作品風格陰柔細膩，善寫都市男女的愛情，後期更以另一筆名「韋韋」專寫奇情小說，進一步探索香港六十至七十年代日漸開放的社會裡的情與慾，意識大膽。然而，由於依達作品乃是流行文學，雖極富參考價值，學界仍少有對其作深入探討。

有見及此，本文將以性別及性向為切入點，剖析依達（及韋韋）在六十至七十年代出版及改編的三部小說與電影──《藍色酒店》（1966年出版，1968年改編）、《舞衣》（1971年出版，1974年改編）和《面具》（1972年出版，1974年改編），思考依達當時作品中的性別問題。本文第一章導論介紹依達及其小說的時代意義，第二章簡介依達，第三章則討論六十至七十年代改編依達小說的影壇狀況，釐清當時文本外之因素。由第四章開始，本文將緊扣上文，轉入作品內分析原著與電影中「相同的男女、不同的命運」，連同第五章「凝視男女的不同方式」，歸納出電影因受業界環境所限而「修正」的性別觀。第六章則探討依達原著與電影中被受同情的「同性情愫」，了解當時作者及香港對同性關係愈見開明的態度。

本文用作家專題之方法，以「六十至七十年代的香港」為橫，以「性別」為縱，借助依達三部小說與改編電影所呈現之不同性別觀，旨在發掘六十至七十年代依達對性別前衛的態度，折射一面香港風景。

This project looks at the logical and experiential priority that Sarah Coakley gives to the Holy Spirit in her approach to trinitarian theology and its implications for human gender and sexuality. Coakley's work tends to lean toward internalizing bodily categories, spiritualizing gender particularity as one's posture toward God. My thesis is that a eucharistic understanding of gender and sexuality is needed to give Coakley's understanding of gender bodily significance.
