A viewer's perception of the world is influenced by his or her individual subjective history, which is the product of his or her own experiences. This paper is an investigation into North American tourism in Cuba between the “Spanish-American War” in 1898 and the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The research it presents was prompted by a set of photographs taken at the grand opening of the Habana Hilton in March 1958, part of the Bern and Franke Keating Collection, held in the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Mississippi. Many of these photos are also included throughout the text of the paper. I begin with an overview of the relationship between Cuba and the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, …

Seawall consists of two self-contained selections of fiction from a larger project. Seawall follows a young man named Million Horizon from the moment he arrives in Galveston, Texas, in September of 1900 along with the historical hurricane that would come to be known as the Great Storm of Galveston. This thesis is narrated in a close third-person focused on Million. Although much of the setting and some of the characters are based on historical fact, this thesis often diverges significantly from historical truth and includes fantastical elements. For educators entering a fine arts classroom for the first time the transition can be quite difficult. Fine arts teachers are often the only specialists in their subject area at a school, placing them in a new situation without a mentor to guide them through the process. The difficulties can be exacerbated by the ideological, financial, and social marginalization of the arts in many schools. Despite the challenges faced by new fine arts educators, little research has focused specifically on their transitions into K-12 classrooms. Learning From Experience: A Critical, Collective Process Following International Short-Term Mission Travel, Nancy Vigander Winfrey

This qualitative dissertation seeks to explore the impact of short-term mission (STM) travel on American Christian volunteers, leveraging the small group structure already present in many churches. Using a participatory action research approach, small groups from two different Protestant churches engaged in cycles of dialogue, reflection and action. The group process was framed by Habermas’ concept of communicative space with emphasis on emotional knowing, cognitive reasoning, and creative expression. Data were collected from session recordings, written documents and process field notes. Content and process analyses were guided by transformative and situated learning theories. The demographics of Oregon’s teacher workforce do not reflect the student population. The most noticeable gap exists between Latin@ students and Latin@ teachers. The purpose of this testimonio study was to explore perceptions of the underrepresentation of Latina teachers in Oregon K–12 rural schools situated in new Latin@ diaspora communities. The researcher wished to ensure that sociohistorical and sociopolitical events as well as the lived experiences help to inform the understanding of the underrepresentation of Latin@ teachers in Oregon. 兩岸的桃花源記 : 論蔣曉雲《桃花井》中的想像與失落, Ka Lo Lau

蔣曉雲與吳念真、朱天心、張大春等人同期出道，二十多歲時曾經在台灣文壇中嶄露頭角。當年朱西甯讀過她的作品後，因她文字中的那份只屬於中文的美感，以及張愛玲散文裡的幽默與詼諧，令朱氏肯定她為「張愛玲、潘人木之後，『無人可及』的言情小說家」，夏志清亦稱她為「另一張愛玲」。

儘管蔣曉雲事後已否定自己的作品有模仿或繼承張愛玲，這種說法卻足以看到文學界對她的肯定。可惜的是，1980年，正當蔣曉雲聲名鵲起之際，她卻毅然放棄自己在文壇上的名氣和地位，到美國留學，及後在當地工作、結婚、生子。

2011年，暌違文壇三十年的蔣曉雲帶著作品《桃花井》 回歸，除了是因為反對自己寫作的父母的逝去及作為她最忠實讀者的侄女的鼎力支持外，更有其歷史及個人原因。蔣曉雲的歸來，不再像過去的作品《隨緣》、《姻緣路》般冷眼旁觀現代適婚男女的錙銖必較，亦無意再度破譯才子佳人傳奇，而是把目光放置於糾纏近半世紀的兩岸關係，嘗試在二十一世紀重新觀照上世紀那些歷史洪流中的「老靈魂」的生平和處境，並從「外省」小人物的身世開始推演一齣兩岸共同架設的荒謬殘酷的家庭劇場。

以下，本論文將會以《桃花井》為中心，分析當代台灣返鄉文學中，外省人所面對的難題與原因，和外省第二代在歷史問題下如何自處，以及在原鄉失落的情況下，這些外省族群對於烏托邦的想像與失落。

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18-year old Black man, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white policeman with the Ferguson Police Department. The incident sparked protests and acts of vandalism in Ferguson as well as widespread calls for an investigation into the incident. On September 3, 2014, The Justice Department announced that it would open a broad civil rights investigation that would examine whether the Ferguson police had a history of discrimination or misuse of force beyond the Michael Brown case. Is Organismic Fitness At The Basis Of Evolutionary Theory?, Charles H. Pence, Grant Ramsey

Fitness is a central theoretical concept in evolutionary theory. Despite its importance, much debate has occurred over how to conceptualize and formalize fitness. One point of debate concerns the roles of organismic and trait fitness. In a recent addition to this debate, Elliott Sober argues that trait fitness is the central fitness concept, and that organismic fitness is of little value. In this paper, by contrast, we argue that it is organismic fitness that lies at the bases of both the conceptual role of fitness and its role as a measure of evolutionary dynamics.

I discuss "economies of violence," comparing non-state (acephalic forager bands and horticultural chiefdoms) and state societies. Capital punishment and tolerated personal revenge in forager bands is both anti-war and anti-state, while some chiefdoms practice war as an anti-state practice.
