In Chinese linguistics, there has been a long-term interest in the many uses of有 yǒu. However, a number of these studies limit the functions of 有 yǒu only to a particular period (i.e. the Archaic or Modern period). Moreover, explanations as to why 有 yǒu lost its dominance and was substituted by other words is rarely given. Thus, this paper will synthesize the key interpretations on the variety of functions of 有 yǒu during their development from the Archaic to Modern Chinese periods, and provide explanations for its semantic and syntactic characteristics. The documentary film Grizzly Man (2005), directed by Werner Herzog, is of special interest among ecocritics and environmental advocates because it deals directly with the topic of wildlife depiction, conservationism and, above all the interspecies relationship between grizzlies and man. This article investigates five problematic elements of Grizzly Man as an ecological film: the wildlife documentary as a genre, the highly controversial figure of Timothy Treadwell who produced the original footage, the grizzlies in the background, the voice and hand of the director Herzog in this film, and the film's ending. Researchers on Myanmar's history have found the Ayedawbon treatises to be a highly momentous Myanmar literary genre which give a record of historical events, next in significance to the Myanmar chronicles. The Myanmar term 'Ayedawbon' is synonymous with the Thai term, Chotmaihet or Kotmaihet and it deals with an account or report of particular events.3 Owing to circumstances and the time consuming nature, never before has anyone attempted to translate these famous works into the English language. Southern Pa-O (S. Pa-O) is a Karenic language of the Tibeto-Burman subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan language family. In Thailand, there is a large S. Pa-O community around Rama II Road. This study aims to investigate the gender variation in acoustic characteristics of S. Pa-O lexical tones. F0 in Hertz based on the biological difference of larynx vibrating rate was converted into semitones to normalize cross-speaker differences. Then, semitone and real time values of 6 lexical tones (4 non-checked tones and 2 checked tones) were used to generate 2nd degree polynomial trendlines to show F0 contours and shapes. This research aimed to investigate the frequency of the use of first personal pronouns in Thai political language, and to analyze the semantic components of the usage of first personal pronouns by politicians. The data were collected from speeches, media programs, interviews, official statements, policy statements and the declaration of the dissolution of parliament. The results indicated that Thai politicians typically use seven first personal pronouns: phǒm 'I (male singular excluding listeners)' krɑ̀phǒm 'I (male singular excluding listeners showing formality)' phûɑk phǒm 'we (plural excluding listeners)' dìchɑ̌ n 'I (female singular excluding listeners)' rɑw1 'we (plural including listeners)' rɑw2 'we …

Encoding Accuracy In Thai Court Judgments, Sorabud Rungrojsuwan

Accuracy is an issue that points to the reliability of language used in legal circles. The objective of the present study is to investigate linguistic devices denoting accuracy in Thai legal discourse. Data was gathered from judgments in three Thai courts: the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court and the Constitutional Court. Findings from Thai legal language were also compared to those from three registers: academic, media and political. The results show that Thai legal language employs two major linguistic devices in order to express accuracy: mention of the sources of evidence and legal citations. The use of the two …

Among the many debates surrounding land in Africa, one that has endured through both colonization and independence is the argument over the merits of preserving customary land law. Human rights based approaches to property rights in Sub-Saharan Africa note women’s secondary or derivative rights to land under customary law, correctly identifying inequalities in rules and practice. Communitarian approaches, on the other hand, address the adaptability and accessibility of land regimes defined by customary law.
