Cracking The Book Of Mormon’S “Secret Combinations”?, Gregory L. Smith

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon has been explained by some as a product of Joseph Smith’s 19th century environment. Advocates of this thesis have argued that the phrase secret combinations is a reference to Freemasonry, and reflects Joseph’s preoccupation with this fraternity during the Book of Mormon’s composition in 1828 29. It is claimed that this phrase is rarely, if ever, used in a non Masonic context during 1828–29, and that a type of “semantic narrowing” occurred which restricted the term to Freemasonry. Past studies have found a few counter-examples, which are reviewed, but none from during the precise years of …

Heartland As Hinterland: The Mesoamerican Core And North American Periphery Of Book Of Mormon Geography, Mark Alan Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The best available evidence for the Book of Mormon continues to support a limited Mesoamerican model. However, Alma 63 indicates that there was a massive northward migration in the mid-first century bc. I argue that these north-bound immigrants spread out over the centuries and established settlements that were geographically distant from the core Nephite area, far beyond the scope of the text of the Book of Mormon. I introduce the Hinterland Hypothesis and argue that it can harmonize the Mesoamerican evidence for the Book of Mormon with Joseph Smith’s statements concerning Nephite and Lamanite material culture in North America. I grew up in a family that discussed Joseph Smith’s polygamy relatively openly. Don’t get me wrong: it wasn’t a topic brought up while we were eating dinner, but when we talked about our genealogy it was almost inevitably mentioned. This is because I am descended by blood through Brigham Young, but my sealing lines are through Joseph Smith. I am a descendent of Emily Partridge, and her children were considered to be Joseph Smith’s even though they were born many years after the martyrdom. This Catholic University of America papyrus (Hyvernat inv. 372 = ICOR 75.73) was first edited by Leslie S. B. MacCoull as “An Account of Fodder for Pack-Horses”, ZPE 25 (1977) 155–158 with Tafel IV. It was subsequently reprinted as SB XIV 12116. At the end of the ed.pr., one of the ZPE editors, D(ieter) H(agedorn), proposed a different reading for the former lines 16–17 (now 17–18; see below, line 1 note). This has been accepted as correct and incorporated in the Duke Databank version of the text. Nevertheless, re-examination of the original publication has suggested that other improvements can be …

Dr. Leslie S.B. MacCoull, papyrologist, Byzantinist, and historian, died at her home in Tempe, Arizona, on August 26 at age 70. MacCoull was born in New London, Connecticut, on August 7, 1945, attended St. Mary’s School in Peekskill, New York, and received her A.B. in Classics from Vassar College in 1965, summa cum laude, as class salutatorian; she had been elected to Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. She received an M.A. in Classics in 1966 from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in Semitics in 1973 with a dissertation on Coptic papyri in …

This essay examines closely how Athena by chartering the Areopagus court resolves the succession of violence on which Aeschylus centered his Oresteia. Neither historical nor dramatic and poetic conventions determine whether Athena calls an odd or even number of human jurors, and does or does not vote with them to create their quitting tie. The interaction of :Orestes', the Erinyes', and Apollo's arguments," together with Athena's reactions, demonstrates that an even-numbered human jury splits equally over whether a human child owes duty more to father or mother. Since its inception critical theory has been ambivalent about what kind of political practice it should promote and in the name of what kind of solidarity. Oversimplifying somewhat, the choices fall somewhere between two extremes: Should it promote institutional reform in the name of achieving democratic solidarity? Or should it promote anarchic revolution in the name of achieving solidarity with suppressed nature, redeeming integral life in its totality from narrow self-interest and instrumental reason?

Polly Pocket & Ninja Turtles: A Content Analysis Of Gender Stereotypes In Children’S Advertisements, Bailey Deloney

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This content analysis examined the use of gender stereotypes, in the forms of product association and various behaviors traditionally expected of a particular gender, in children’s advertisements aired on Nickelodeon network. In spite of the current trend of Fem-vertising and successful campaigns such as Always’s #LikeAGirl, results of this study revealed that although children’s commercials appear to be breaking away from some long-standing gender stereotypes, many stereotypes remain. These stereotypes can be damaging to a child’s self-esteem, self-view and self-realization. We find that commercials on Nickelodeon favor boy characters in overall time on-screen while girls-only commercials made up the lowest …

Pound and disability: the two keywords of my title are not happy bedfellows. Why then insist on their conjunction? My answer is that neither Pound studies, on its own, nor a Pound-free disability studies can offer a history of American twentieth-century poetry that is both sensitive to changes in a literary tradition and changes in attitudes towards disability.

Gender has an impact on 20th and 21st century female flute music composers and their ability to have music published and performed. Rigid gender roles and stereotypes often prevent female composers from being able to share their music with the world. The purpose of the current study was to describe the process of music learning and the perceptions of members in a school-based middle school handbell setting. The participants were 39 students and one music teacher in a middle school in Texas. The design of the current study was a case study using observation and interview data. The results highlight a successful middle school handbell ensemble setting that could be used as a model for a different form of music learning environment than the traditional options generally found in the schools. In the United States, Latino/a students are underrepresented in secondary school music programs (Elpus & Abril, 2011). By understanding the needs of Latino/a students, music educators can create programs that will better serve this student population. The vision in this poem really happened; I remember my aunt coming home from a trip to Mexico visibly shaken. I was raised by only my mother and aunt, with my aunt being the hard-nosed disciplinarian. To see her shook up was something new. One detail that lives around the poem but didn’t make it in is that she quit heavy drinking for a while after this incident.
