Genre-Savvy Sonnets: Shakespeare’S Subversion Of Problematic Conventions Of Courtly Love, Kelly Kramer

The Kabod

In an analysis of Shakespeare's 130th Sonnet, Kramer finds that the Bard champions a better way to love rather than the idealization of another that is the convention of courtly love. Actually knowing and loving someone's flaws and oddities is more constructive and enduring in contrast to the courtly love tradition which Shakespeare implies is harmful and misleading in its teaching to value the wrong thing in another.

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The first appearance of photographs in class albums at Harvard University occurred in 1852, beginning a tradition that has continued to the present day. The albums include photographic portraits of the graduating college classes, faculty, and staff as well as views of the campus. The class photographers, including John Adams Whipple, James Wallace Black, and George Kendall Warren, created salted paper prints for the albums from 1852 until 1864. The collection of early class albums was recently surveyed, as part of a larger initiative undertaken by Harvard Library’s the Weissman Preservation Center to preserve and enhance access to salt prints …

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. When Narrative Fails: Context And Physical Evidence As Means Of Understanding The Northwest Boundary Survey Photographs Of 1857–1862, James A. Eason

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The photographs of the Northwest Boundary Survey, taken chiefly in 1860–1861, present many of the problems commonly encountered in the study of nineteenth-century photography. These views documenting the international border between modern British Columbia and the American Pacific Northwest provide a useful case study in the close reading of physical attributes of photographs. They afford an opportunity to compare imagery and evidence across known sets, and to draw conclusions from sequencing, variant captioning, and other physical evidence. The ITB Journal

In this paper we analyse the structure of situation types as found in Irish. We translate these situation types into a logical metalanguage, giving the logical structure of each type. We do this to differentiate, for Irish, the aktionsarten distinctions of state, activity, achievement and accomplishment as they are found within the language. The motivation of this paper is therefore to describe the aktionsart of modern Irish and to determine the logical structure that underpins these situation types.

I like to imagine that if Sarah Emma Edmonds were my contemporary she would often sport a t-shirt saying, "This is what a feminist looks like."

Edmonds was a patriot, a feminist, and, along with an estimated 400 other women, a soldier in the American Civil War. Fed up with her father’s abuse and appalled at the prospect of an arranged marriage Edmonds left her New Brunswick home at the age of fifteen and soon adopted a male identity to become a successful worker. This workshop, Digitization 101: To Digitize or Not to Digitize? was presented at the West Virginia Library Association (WVLA) Fall Conference on October 6, 2015. The focus of the workshop was to introduce the participants to factors and considerations that should be taken into account prior to starting a digitization project for the preservation of textual and graphic materials. Also included was a technical session (Session 2) on the selection of hardware and software for digitization as well as accepted best practices.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2949. Two cassette tapes which include an interview conducted by Robert H. McGaughey with Otis Lee Wiggins about the resettlement program undertaken by the Resettlement Administration Project 14 in Christian County, Kentucky. Wiggins was an administrator for the U.S. Resettlement Administration and discusses the Christian County program in great detail.
