Review: 'Common Threads: A Cultural History Of Clothing In American Catholicism', Una M. Cadegan
Review: 'Common Threads: A Cultural History Of Clothing In American Catholicism', Una M. Cadegan
History Faculty Publications
Sally Dwyer-McNulty's Common Threads is a readable, useful study. The work's scope is narrower than the title suggests, but it is evocative nonetheless. The book focuses primarily on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (more on the latter), the clothing of priests and female religious (sisters or nuns), and the uniforms of Catholic schoolgirls.

Uncovering Meanings Of Death, Trauma, And Loss As Experienced By Hospice Bereavement Coordinators: A Phenomenological Study, Rochelle S. Clarke
Uncovering Meanings Of Death, Trauma, And Loss As Experienced By Hospice Bereavement Coordinators: A Phenomenological Study, Rochelle S. Clarke
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
This study examined the experiences of Hospice Bereavement Coordinators (HBCs) and Hospice Chaplains working with grief narratives from patient-family units exhibiting signs of anticipatory or complicated grief. While a significant amount of research has been conducted on Hospice employees, no qualitative studies have examined the interpretation of meaning from employees whose primary role focused on the psychosocial-spiritual aspects of clients exhibiting anticipatory or complicated grief. The researcher identified shared meaning of death, trauma, and loss from six participants in the context of a high stress and high loss environment. This study‘s findings revealed ten central themes: Death is an earthly …

Disciplinary And Professional Identities Are Constructed Through Writing, Heidi Estrem
Disciplinary And Professional Identities Are Constructed Through Writing, Heidi Estrem
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
While people can negotiate how identities are constructed through writing in a variety of contexts (see 3.1 , "Writing Is Linked to Identity") , many first encounter unfamiliar disciplinary (or professional) discourse in college. In most American colleges and universities in the United States, students complete-general education courses (introductory courses designed to introduce students to both ways of thinking and disciplinary perspectives within the university) before continuing on to specialized courses within their chosen disciplines or fields. This increasingly discipline-specific learning process involves both the simple acquisition of new knowledge and an "expansion and transformation of identity, of a learner's …
Nothing Beautiful Hides Its Face’: The Hiddenness Of Esther In C. S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, John Anthony Dunne
Nothing Beautiful Hides Its Face’: The Hiddenness Of Esther In C. S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, John Anthony Dunne
Seminary Faculty Publications
C. S. Lewis’ last and arguably best novel, Till We Have Faces, is an impressively nuanced revision and recasting of Apuleius’ short tale of Cupid and Psyche, Books 4–6 of The Golden Ass. Although this ancient myth was the main source for Till We Have Faces, inspiration was no doubt gained from many places. One such influence, previously unnoted, was the biblical book of Esther. This study will note some of the key places where the influence of Esther is detectable, in particular Lewis’ choice of the name “Istra.” This is followed by an investigation into why Esther may have …
