Militarization And Modern Gaming: An Analysis Of The Relationship Of The Military And The Video Game Industry, Steven Chapman Jan 2015

Militarization And Modern Gaming: An Analysis Of The Relationship Of The Military And The Video Game Industry, Steven Chapman

Online Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the influence of militarism and the military itself in modern video gaming. The military's involvement includes developing its own, free of charge, video game title used as a recruitment tool, and training games used to desensitize new soldiers. Surrounding this direct involvement is a massive gaming industry that markets war and killing in the execution of the former in a "realistic" yet intensely glorified manner. The macro-cultural and societal implications of this phenomenon are explored.

Crane Boy, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2015

Crane Boy, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior I designed for 'Crane Boy' written by Diana Cohn and illustrated by Youme, published by Cinco Puntos Press. It tells the tale of Kinga and his classmates waiting for the black-necked cranes to return to the kingdom of Bhutan. The birds fly south over the highest mountains in the word to winter in the valley where Kinga lives, deep in the Himalayas. The cranes have been visiting the valley since ancient times, but every year, fewer cranes return. Kinga is concerned. "What can he do?," he wonders. He and his classmates approach the monks for permission …

Posters For Nepal, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I was invited to design a poster for the campaign ‘Posters for Nepal’ which is to be on sale at http://www.postersfornepal.com/. All proceeds to benefit UNICEF and the American Red Cross. I visited Nepal with friends in the summer of 1999. That trip has such special, magical memories to me that when I heard of the devastating earthquake that hit there in April of 2015, in many of the same areas that I had visited, I was heartbroken. I recall the beautiful, friendly people we met there and their resilience in both a tough climate and tough economic circumstances. I …

The Do-Right, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover I designed for 'The Do-Right' written by Lisa Sandlin, published by Cinco Puntos Press. This was one of those design jobs that, after several cover proposals by me—including a woodcut, and one with groovy 70s type referencing the time period in which the book is set, we all decided that this photo entitled 'Blessing' by Keith Carter was simply perfect for the cover. It's a great read brimming with Grrrrl power in the main character of Delpha Wade. 306 pages. 1973. That's fourteen years of prison time after Delpha Wade killed a man who was raping her. She’d …

Nietzsche's Antichrist: The Birth Of Modern Science Out Of The Spirit Of Religion, Babette Babich Jan 2015

Nietzsche's Antichrist: The Birth Of Modern Science Out Of The Spirit Of Religion, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Nietzsche argued that the Greeks were in possessions of every theoretical, mathematical, logical, and technological antecedent for the development of what could be modern science. But if they had all these necessary prerequisites what else could they have needed? Not only had the ancient Greeks no religious world-view antagonistic to scientific inquiry, they also lacked the Judeo-Christian promissory ideal of salvation in a future life (after death). Subsequently, when Greek culture had been irretrievably lost, what Nietzsche regarded as the "decadent" Socratic ideal of reason ultimately and in connection with the preludes of religion and alchemy developed into modern science …

The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich Jan 2015

The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

If discussion of “new” approaches to Martin Heidegger contradicts Heidegger’s own indictment of the passion for “novelty” in philosophy, today’s Black Notebooks scandal reminds us of the ontic problem of new news. Indeed the backwards working evidence of the notebooks kept before, during, and after WWII both vindicates and problematizes his notion of temporality temporalizing from the future -- lapsing into the past -- setting up what is now regarded as patent in the present. Simultaneously, we see that if heretofore many philosophers of technology sought to dismiss engagement with Heidegger’s critique of technology, these critical contributions turn out to …

Calling Science Pseudoscience: Fleck’S Archaeologies Of Fact And Latour’S ‘Biography Of An Investigation’ In Aids Denialism And Homeopathy, Babette Babich Jan 2015

Calling Science Pseudoscience: Fleck’S Archaeologies Of Fact And Latour’S ‘Biography Of An Investigation’ In Aids Denialism And Homeopathy, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact foregrounds claims traditionally excluded from reception, often regarded as opposed to fact, scientific claims that are increasingly seldom discussed in connection with philosophy of science save as examples of pseudo-science. I am especially concerned with scientists who question the epidemiological link between HIV and AIDS and who are thereby discounted—no matter their credentials, no matter the cogency of their arguments, no matter the sobriety of their statistics—but also with other classic examples of so-called pseudo-science including homeopathy and other sciences, such as cold fusion. The pseudo-science version of the demarcation problem turns …

The Role Of Individual Differences In L2 Learners’ Retention Of Written Corrective Feedback, Mohammad Rahimi Jan 2015

The Role Of Individual Differences In L2 Learners’ Retention Of Written Corrective Feedback, Mohammad Rahimi

Journal of Response to Writing

The present study aims to investigate the extent to which L2 learners’ individual differences (field dependency and writing motivation) predict their retention of a teacher’s written corrective feedback (CF) in the short and in the long run. Using Ellis’s (2010) theoretical framework, the study examines the issue from cognitive and affective perspectives. Data was collected from 127 intermediate-level university students through written essays, a field-dependence/independence (FDI) questionnaire, and a writing motivation questionnaire, which were analyzed through t test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. The results reveal that there is a strong relationship between field independence (FI) style and the students’ successful …

Beyond “Giver-Receiver” Relationships: Facilitating An Interactive Revision Process, Elena Shvidko Jan 2015

Beyond “Giver-Receiver” Relationships: Facilitating An Interactive Revision Process, Elena Shvidko

Journal of Response to Writing

Research has shown that in order to facilitate the development of students’ writing, teachers need to cultivate principles of effective feedback. However, revision is a joint process, and for the maximum effectiveness of this process, there should be more than just a giver-receiver relationship with the teacher giving the information and the student receiving it. Instead, students should be actively involved in the revision process by reflecting on and analyzing their own writing and meaningfully responding to teacher feedback. This teaching article describes a technique—Letter to the Reviewer—that facilitates collaboration between the teacher and the student. A Letter to the …

Review Of Peer Pressure, Peer Power: Theory And Practice In Peer Review And Response For The Writing Classroom, Kendon Kurzer Jan 2015

Review Of Peer Pressure, Peer Power: Theory And Practice In Peer Review And Response For The Writing Classroom, Kendon Kurzer

Journal of Response to Writing

Peer Pressure, Peer Power: Theory and Practice in Peer Review and Response for the Writing Classroom ($38.00 in paperback; 296 pages) compiles research and theory articles from a wide assortment of scholars interested in peer review, an area of research that, according to the editors, is woefully underdeveloped, despite being “a ubiquitous feature of the composition classroom” (Lawson Ching, p. 15). As such, this book provides valuable insights into theories and research-based pedagogical suggestions to increase the effectiveness of peer review in various contexts. With the aim of keeping this review concise, I will not address each article featured in …

Lay Your Burdens Down, Whitnee Levon Davis Jan 2015

Lay Your Burdens Down, Whitnee Levon Davis

CGU MFA Theses

I’m not of this world, but since I’m here I will do everything I can to live out my purpose; to tell stories that validate, affirm, and make people that look like me visible. Every culture has its storytellers. I translate written stories into images. Those stories can be in the form of a poem, song, novel, or play. The stories are works that I create. I often find my greatest inspiration starts from reading literary works. I am constantly seeking ways to make sure that Black people, especially Black women, are visually represented. Since my background is in poetry, …

Causal And Mechanistic Explanations, And A Lesson From Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru Jan 2015

Causal And Mechanistic Explanations, And A Lesson From Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Jani Raerinne and Lindley Darden argue that causal claims are not sufficiently explanatory, and causal talk should be replaced with mechanistic talk. I examine several examples from ecological research, two of which rely on causal models and structural equation modeling, to show that the assertions of Raerinne and of Darden have to be reconsidered.

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu Jan 2015

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Le Mouvement Des Harraga — Un Traumatisme Historique Et Politique Qui Dévoile La Face Cachée De L’Europe, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

The Effect Of Low-Frequency Sound Stimulation On Patients With Fibromyalgia: A Clinical Study, Lili Naghdi, Heidi Ahonen, Pasqualino Macario, Lee Bartel Jan 2015

The Effect Of Low-Frequency Sound Stimulation On Patients With Fibromyalgia: A Clinical Study, Lili Naghdi, Heidi Ahonen, Pasqualino Macario, Lee Bartel

Music Faculty Publications

Background: The search for effective treatments for fibromyalgia (FM) has continued for years. The present study premises that thalamocortical dysrhythmia is implicated in fibromyalgia and that low-frequency sound stimulation (LFSS) can play a regulatory function by driving neural rhythmic oscillatory activity.

Objective: To assess the effect of LFSS on FM.

Method: The present open-label study with no control group used a repeated-measures design with no noncompleters. Nineteen female volunteers (median age 51 years; median duration of FM 5.76 years) were administered 10 treatments (twice per week for five weeks). Treatments involved 23 min of LFSS at 40 Hz, delivered using …

Borderless Boundaries – As Means Of Death And Life: Wilderness Portraits In Patristic And Rabbinic Literature, Daniel Maoz Jan 2015

Borderless Boundaries – As Means Of Death And Life: Wilderness Portraits In Patristic And Rabbinic Literature, Daniel Maoz

Luther Faculty Publications

This study examines the role played by environmental representation of an apparent borderless boundary, the desert, as presented in Scripture – the Hebrew Bible / First Testament. It considers lessons derived from “desert-thought” testified within Rabbinic and Patristic literature. In Scripture, the desert played a prominent role in both Exodus and Akedah, two narratives central to Jewish thought and Christian theology. Beyond this, desert fathers such as Antony of Egypt expressed profound spirituality through this desolate land (Chrysostom; Athanasius, Vita). The Rabbis repeatedly embellished, for virtue’s sake, lessons gained from this same bleak landscape (Midrash Bemidbar Rabbah). An early version …

The Effects Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: A 30-Week Study, K. James Hartshorn, Norman W. Evans Jan 2015

The Effects Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback: A 30-Week Study, K. James Hartshorn, Norman W. Evans

Journal of Response to Writing

This study addresses several challenges in written corrective feedback (WCF) research. First, scholars have expressed concerns that although studies of focused WCF may benefit some classrooms and may help advance second language acquisition theory, they may not represent ecologically valid methods where comprehensive feedback may be more appropriate. Second, many focused WCF studies only report on learner performance within a narrow list of linguistic features, making it impossible for others to determine any secondary benefits or detriments of the treatment. Finally, many research studies of WCF have been of limited duration, making it difficult to identify longer-term effects of various …

Rudolph The Red Nosed Squirrel Or Miracle On 82nd Street: Fiction/Quotation/Exposition, Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

"Rudolph The Red Nosed Squirrel or Miracle on 82nd Street: Fiction/Quotation/Exposition" by Marleen S. Barr (3721 words) Well…way to sell that weird in the first story and sell it hard. This…this is a metatextual sleigh ride through science fiction, about science fiction, about the ways in which science fiction is shaped and manipulated by people and the way that science fiction can shape and manipulate reality. But fuck is this not a really odd story that mixes "real life" with pure fantasy, positing a black Samuel Delany Santa Claus and a world that isn't quite so bound by rules as …
