Imagining The Scandal Of The Cross With Graphic/Novel Reading, Elizabeth Rae Coody
Imagining The Scandal Of The Cross With Graphic/Novel Reading, Elizabeth Rae Coody
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For countless adherents to the Christian tradition, the Cross functions as a symbol of divine power. For the earliest Christians, however, this overwhelmingly positive valuation of crosses would have been unintelligible. Living under Roman rule, their immediate understanding of crosses would have been as instruments of execution and thus symbols of the power and victory belonging to a foreign empire rather than to the Lord they worshipped. For them, the crucifixion was a traumatic event in which the Messiah died shamefully. It is for these reasons that the scandal of the Cross is a prominent theme in the New Testament, …
Internationalization: Utilizing The University Museum, Adrienne Turnbull-Reilly
Internationalization: Utilizing The University Museum, Adrienne Turnbull-Reilly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A review of the literature on the nature of international education in the United States reveals that although most international students want to engage socially and academically with their peers, many encounter cultural, linguistic, and institutional obstacles. Using this information to guide interview questions and format workshops, the author explored the question of how university museums can contribute to a more holistic and enriching educational experience for international students on American campuses, using the University of Denver as a case study. Findings from workshops and interviews conducted by the author reveal similar obstacles (cultural, linguistic, and institutional) when engaging students …
They Said, She Said: Making The Case For Rape In Fuenteovejuna, Stacey L. Parker Aronson
They Said, She Said: Making The Case For Rape In Fuenteovejuna, Stacey L. Parker Aronson
Spanish Publications
Despite the allegations of a number of literary critics to the contrary, textual and cultural evidence exists in Lope’s Fuenteovejuna to suggest that Laurencia was indeed raped. First, a consideration of her physical appearance is in order. Second, an overlooked comment by Jacinta evidences Laurencia’s rape. Third, the quality attributed to Laurencia, namely her virtue, should be understood within its socio-historical context during the early modern period, its understanding superseding an exclusively sexual meaning. Finally, this drama can be considered in light of its adherence to and subversion of what Wendy S. Hesford terms “rape scripts.”

Buffalo Soldier, Deserter, Criminal: The Remarkably Complicated Life Of Charles Ringo, Cicero Fain
Buffalo Soldier, Deserter, Criminal: The Remarkably Complicated Life Of Charles Ringo, Cicero Fain
History Faculty Research
This case study chronicles the remarkably complicated life of Charles Ringo who served nearly two enlistments as a Buffalo Soldier before deserting and embarking on a life of petty crime. It details his military service, his nomadic occupational life, his marriage, his acquittal of two sets of murders--one of his stepsons in West Virginia, the other of a white married couple in Illinois, and the assistance of white authorities who intervened to save and protect Ringo from the predations of angry mobs and racist courts. It situates Ringo’s exploits within the oppositional/alternative nature of African American working-class life, the failure …

The field of ecology is poised to take advantage of emerging technologies that facilitate the gathering, analyzing, and sharing of data, methods, and results. The concept of transparency at all stages of the research process, coupled with free and open access to data, code, and papers, constitutes “open science.” Despite the many benefits of an open approach to science, a number of barriers to entry exist that may prevent researchers from embracing openness in their own work. Here we describe several key shifts in mindset that underpin the transition to more open science. These shifts in mindset include thinking about …
The Connection Between Race And Called Strikes And Balls, Jeff Hamrick, John Rasp
The Connection Between Race And Called Strikes And Balls, Jeff Hamrick, John Rasp
Master of Science in Analytics (MSAN) Faculty Research
We investigate potential racial bias by Major League Baseball umpires. We do so in the context of the subjective decision as to whether a pitch is called a strike or a ball, using data from the 1989-2010 seasons. We find limited, and sometimes contradictory, evidence that umpires unduly favor or unjustly discriminate against players based on their race. Potential mitigating variables such as attendance, terminal pitch, the absolute score differential, and the presence of monitoring systems do not consistently interact with umpire/pitcher and umpire/hitter racial combinations. Most evidence that would first appear to support racially connected behaviors by umpires appears …
Academic Ghostwriting And International Students, Shulun Zheng, Jie Cheng
Academic Ghostwriting And International Students, Shulun Zheng, Jie Cheng
Rhetoric and Language Student Publications and Research
Ghostwriting is a common practice in a variety of professional and artistic endeavors but is only acceptable when the audience expects it. In academia, ghostwriting student essays is considered dishonest among faculty, but not all students agree since some of them do employ ghostwriters. In this article, we examine how international students perceive ghostwriting by interviewing ghostwriters and students who have used those services. We ultimately argue that a liberal arts education requires that students behave ethically, which excludes ghostwriters.
Evolution Of La'ie's Landscape, Riley Moffat
Evolution Of La'ie's Landscape, Riley Moffat
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
As we celebrate the sesquicentennial of Mormon Laie we must remember that all history occurs on a stage, a geographical landscape that effects how that history can evolve. There are natural limitations to what the human occupants of a particular landscape can do and this therefore affects their decisions. This has certainly been the case with Laie since the beginning of time. As Marshall Sahlins has written: culture “transforms its landscape and so must respond anew to changes that it had set in motion”. (Sahlins. “Culture and Environment: The Study of Cultural Ecology” in S. Tax, ed. Horizons of Anthropology. …
Sacred And Historical Latter-Day Saint Places Of Laie, Mary Jane Woodger
Sacred And Historical Latter-Day Saint Places Of Laie, Mary Jane Woodger
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
Through the ages, the locations at which sacred historical events occurred have traditionally become holy. How holy or sacred a site is depends on the understanding of those beholding it. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote that “Earth’s crammed with heaven, / And every common bush afire with god; / But only he who sees, takes off his shoes— / The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.”1 Though some may consider some of the locations listed in this paper to be mere “berry picking sites,” for those who lived there, these places became consecrated by their sacrifices.

The History And Archeology Of Laie Wharf At Pounders, Benjamin R. Jordan
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
Introduction Lai’e, Hawai’i, is a small village on the windward side of the north shore of the Hawai’ian island of Oahu. In 1865, the area of Lai’e was purchased by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a place for new Mormon converts to gather and form a community. In 1868 the area of Lai’e, in order to become self-sufficient, was turned into a large sugar plantation with a sugar milli. Originally, the processed sugar and molasses was stored at the mill until a ship came in to shore. When that happened, the mill was shut down while …

The beautiful new Temple of the Latter-day Saints at Laie, Oahu, Hawaii territory, was dedicated on Thursday, Nov. 27, 1919, by President Heber ]. Grant. The services were attended by a number of the general authorities of the Church, and by many local officers and Saints, and the religious ceremonies and the dedicatory prayer delivered by President Grant were impressive and inspiring to the last degree. It was a solemn and in many other ways memorable occasion, when the past and the present were linked together in ceremonious religious observance, and another epoch in the history of temple building was …

Conversion: A Reflection On The Influences Involved In The Personal Eternal Change Event Within The Global Community, Edward Charles Nelson
Conversion: A Reflection On The Influences Involved In The Personal Eternal Change Event Within The Global Community, Edward Charles Nelson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
What is conversion? For many, conversion is defined psychologically, sociologically, anthropologically and culturally, philosophically, or religiously and theologically. No matter how conversion may be defined academically, that definition becomes rather confining. It could be that in focusing on human inducements, the dynamic of the real Source of conversion can be missed. It has been disclosed that while the human factors involved in a decisive event can be initiated by the divine dynamic, it is only when there has been a response of humility and repentance with faith that God seems willing to complete his global “new birth” work of conversion.

Road Stories, Louis Mindar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Road Stories is a collection of three novellas that explore the pull, allure, sanctuary, serendipity, and adventure of life on the open road. The novellas examine how for some, the road holds the promise of a new day, an improved life, a better opportunity, or a deeper love; while for others, it is nothing more than an assortment of jumbled blue lines on a map. In Tierra del Fuego, a man takes to the road to figure out how to deal with the grief and sense of betrayal he feels following the death of his wife. Lake of the Falls …

The Elect Methodists: Calvinistic Methodism In England And Wales, 1735-1811: Book Review, Isabel Rivers
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
The Calvinistic Methodists have received far less attention from historians than the Wesleyan or Arminian Methodists, and this book sets out to remedy that neglect. The imbalance is not surprising-Methodism of the Wesleyan kind became and remains a multimillion, worldwide movement, with many variants that retain the Wesleyan emphasis on holiness and salvation open to all, whereas eighteenth-century English Calvinistic Methodism is now represented only by the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, active on a small scale in England and Sierra Leone, while its Welsh co-movement became the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church, now known as the Presbyterian Church of Wales. The …

Publications on the religious history of the French Revolution were in vogue during the second half of the nineteenth century. Several important essays published then are still regarded as landmarks for this topic, including those by Edgar Quinet (Le christianisme et la Revolution franraise, 1845), Francois-Alphonse Aulard (Le Culte de la Raison et le Culte de l'Btre Supreme, 1892), and Albert Mathiez (Les origines des cultes revolutionnaires, 1904). After this initial wave of interest, the religious paradigm of the French Revolution disappeared from scholarly discussions for more than half a century. Not until the …
Commenting Across The Disciplines: Partnering With Writing Centers To Train Faculty To Respond Effectively To Student Writing, Andrea Scott
Commenting Across The Disciplines: Partnering With Writing Centers To Train Faculty To Respond Effectively To Student Writing, Andrea Scott
Journal of Response to Writing
Faculty and writing center tutors bring expertise to writing as practice and process. Yet at many institutions, the two groups work in relative isolation, missing opportunities to learn from each other. In this article, I describe a faculty development initiative in a multidisciplinary writing program that brings together new faculty and experienced undergraduate tutors to workshop instructors’ comments on first-year writing. The purpose of these workshops is to assist faculty in crafting inquiry-driven written responses that pave the way for collaborative faculty-student conferences. By bringing together scholarly conversations on tutor expertise and the role of faculty comments in student learning, …
