Marxist Theory Of The Media Or Theory Of The Media By Marxists? Reconciling Adorno With Other Marxist Media Theorists, Farooq Kperogi
Marxist Theory Of The Media Or Theory Of The Media By Marxists? Reconciling Adorno With Other Marxist Media Theorists, Farooq Kperogi
Faculty Articles
Although Marx himself did not explicitly theorize the media, his postulations and adumbrations about the dialectics of cultural and ideological mediation have provided a robust springboard for a Marxist theory of themedia. In this article, I briefly chronicle the trajectory of scholarship and research on the mass media u,sing the Marxist paradigm and coalesce the disparate corpus of broad research traditions and paradigm shifts thathave occurred within the Marxist critical tradition. I conclude by calling attention to the points of convergence between Theodor Adorno and other Marxist media theorists. I particularly show how Adorno reconciles theculturalist and political economic tendencies …
Antony And Armenia, Lee Patterson
Antony And Armenia, Lee Patterson
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Antony is commonly credited with incorporating Armenia as a Roman province. Those who make this claim, however, must face not only a lack of direct evidence for such an annexation but the absence of a plausible explanation when the historical context is fully revealed. Antony’s desire to return triumphantly one day to Rome explains his handling of Armenia, whose reduction he justified by removing its ostensibly treacherous king. The evidence collectively suggests that Antony afterwards envisioned Armenia as a future client state, which would be consistent with his treatment of other regions of the Near East earlier in his career.
Eco-Glossolalia: Emerging Twenty-First Century Pentecostal And Charismatic Ecotheology, A.J. Swoboda
Eco-Glossolalia: Emerging Twenty-First Century Pentecostal And Charismatic Ecotheology, A.J. Swoboda
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This study sets out first to chart developments in an emerging and growing body of research in the field of Pentecostal and Charismatic Ecotheology. This literature is grouped within three main trajectories characterized as Pentecostal and Charismatic Social Justice Theology, Pentecostal and Charismatic Spirit/ Creation Theology, and distinctively Pentecostal and Charismatic Ecotheology. Second, this study experiments with a possible pneumatological metaphor that can remedy the growing need for Pentecostal scholarship in the area of ecotheology: the Spirit baptized creation.
Scarcity Vs. Abundance: Moving Beyond Dualism To “Enough”, Cherice Bock
Scarcity Vs. Abundance: Moving Beyond Dualism To “Enough”, Cherice Bock
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
In American culture, we are often caught between a fear of scarcity and an awareness of overwhelming abundance. I don’t know about you, but I often feel bombarded by messages encouraging me to get more, be more, have more, do more. Even as an American of modest means, I have abundant access to food and other resources. There is even an abundance of exercise equipment and regimens to help us burn off the abundance of calories we eat — and an abundance of how-to books on simplifying our lives after all the stuff we buy. Abundance seems to be everywhere.

"We Know How To Keep House And We Know How To Keep A City": Contextualizing Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon's Feminism, Jennifer L. Duqué
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
“I can’t bear a mannish woman or a mannish man either,” Martha Hughes Cannon declared a few days after she was elected the first female state senator in the United States. “All the best men I know are ladylike and all the best women I know are gentlemanly.” Throughout her life, Cannon pulled seemingly subversive stunts framed within a milieu of social support that demystifies, or at least partially elucidates, her frequent departure from normative female behavior. However, the purpose of this paper is not to join the voices of scholars arguing that nineteenth-century Mormon culture was one of radical …
Women In Refrigerators: The Objectification Of Women In Comics, Kyra Nelson
Women In Refrigerators: The Objectification Of Women In Comics, Kyra Nelson
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
In Green Lantern issue 54, Kyle Rayner, a new addition to the Green Lantern corps, walks into his apartment. On the table he finds a note saying a surprise awaits him in the refrigerator. Kyle makes his way into the kitchen and to his horror discovers the body of his strangled girlfriend, Alex, stuffed into the refrigerator. Alex, who only made it through five issues of the series, suffers a fate similar to those of many other women in comics. Frequently, comic book writers employ female characters as little more than plot devices designed to provide emotional drama and backstory …

Writing In And Around Video Games, Wendi Sierra
English Faculty/Staff Publications
This undergraduate course uses video games as a lens through which to explore the infinitely broader topic of digital rhetoric. Students encounter games in several different ways: as texts to analyze, raw material for video compositions, systems to create and explore. Key topics include genre conventions and constraints, audience, procedural rhetoric, interface design, and convergence culture.

World War I was said to be the war to end all wars. But who were the men that fought this war? What happened to them before they were soldiers? And what remained after? Andrew Krivak's short novel The Sojourn, offers some answers to these questions as well as offering a meditation on language and storytelling as tools for promoting peace. Words and shared language build relationships in this book. And at the end of the Great War, which consumes the middle portion of the novel, the shadow of these relationships is what remains, along with the remnants of …

What happens to a man when he is stripped of his freedom? What happens to a person when they are told they aren’t deserving of a fair chance? These are questions that, thankfully, very few people ever have to answer. Most are lucky to be born into a world where they are treated equally by those around them. Wilbert Rideau was not so lucky; he was born into a world that said he didn't matter. Trapped inside Jim Crow society with very few opportunities, Rideau would eventually make the choice to commit a terrible crime. In the aftermath of his …
