Many will recognize this sketch of new international undergraduates at a U.S. university: Excited. Jet-lagged. Late to class because they got lost on a big campus. Overwhelmed by myriad things to do on the first days of the semester. Confused by the English language that sounds so different. Thrown into a first-year writing course instrumental to their academic success.

John Dewey’s Art as Experience (1934) explores how art develops out of everyday experience. Imbued with the pragmatism of William James, Dewey widens the discourse of aesthetics so as to recognise that our creation, experience and appreciation of the aesthetic is linked intrinsically to being human. By encouraging the natural playfulness of children, advocates of Philosophy for Children (P4C) may creatively engage students to think, reflect and be more aware of the impact their gestures have on others. One of the most fundamental aspects of the embodied human life is human interaction that is based on expressions, what Schmid (2000b) …

Ethnic Studies
We present a concept-mapping activity, developed within a youth Participatory Action Research (yPAR) after-school program, to demonstrate how the activity contributed to young people’s conceptualization of social structures as interconnected. We analyze fieldnotes from the Change 4 Good yPAR program, which includes primarily Latina/o 4th and 5th grade students attending a California public elementary school. We discuss the concept-mapping activity in terms of its processes and outcomes, and how youth constructed interconnected meanings from thematic community narratives.

One of the challenges of the liturgical readings from Scripture is for them to stay fresh—that is, for us, hearing them many times in a lifetime, to continue to listen to them deeply. We may, subconsciously, feel we know them and have little left to learn. An opposite situation arises from the discourse around the so-called new cosmology, where the language and concepts may seem so strange—even forbidding—to us that we can’t find a way in. The very unfamiliarity of the science and philosophy, the geology and physics, may close our ears to what is offered there for us.

Designing Social Change: Inquiry-Based Practice & Teaching, Donald Tarallo
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
This paper shares an exploratory and inquiry-based graphic design project and the resultant pedagogic approach that offers arts and design educators ideas on teaching to instigate positive social change. The author summarizes a year-long fellowship project where he worked as a change agent in service to a partnership of six non-profit, after-school arts programs in Providence, Rhode Island who are organized as the Providence Youth Arts Collaborative (PYAC).
The intention of this project was two-fold. The primary effort was to investigate ways graphic design can be strategically used to seed interest and empower youth to make positive choices with how …

Noah and the Ark. Jonah and the Big Fish. Mary's yes to the Angel. Jesus's yes in the Garden of Gethsemane. Pilot's no and his wife's please, don't. Lot's wife and her last, homeward look. To whom do these sto- ries belong? And how should we read them, each from our particular corner of incarnate humanity? Here is what my corner looks like: I am a woman; I am a feminist; l am a literary critic; I am a product of Westernized Christianity. I write and read from the space where these words overlap, but what does that mean when …

Excerpt: "The road to Camp On High was a two-lane highway that snaked uneasily up the side of Cedar Mountain. Quinn sat in the back of the van, next to a window that looked out into empty space. Somehow, the other kids were sleeping through this, three neat rows of lolling heads, ear buds dangling. Earlier in the ride, sturdy evergreens had covered the mountainside, jutting upward and waiting to catch the van that would, any second-Quinn was convinced-careen over the edge. But by now the trees had grown fragile and sparse, exposing gashes of red-orange rock and promising nothing."

Book Review: The Wittenbergs: A Novel By Sarah Klassen, Melanie Springer Mock
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Excerpt: "In many ways, Sarah Klassen's novel, The Wittenbergs, turns on the question of family history and just how heavy a burden one family's past can weigh upon its current generations. For the Wittenbergs, the family at the center of Klassen's text, this sometimes unacknowledged weight carries with it certain consequences. Only a reformation of sorts can set the family free to understand their history in new, more hopeful, ways."

When political unrest and death surround a family, how do they find peace? In Brother, I’m Dying, Edwidge Danticat explores this question in her memoir of two brothers and the families they raised. Through the course of their lives many issues of interest to peace readers are explored, from the devastating impact on individual lives of foreign intervention in Haiti and US immigration policy, to the strengthening bonds of family and their resistance to severance by death.

Traffickacts.Org: Turning Advocacy To Action To Combat Human Trafficking Through The Public, Sarah Gardner
MA IDS Thesis Projects
This paper discusses in depth one of the most controversial topics today in the field of development and social justice: human trafficking. Examining it from an activist perspective, this paper defines human trafficking, reviews the history of slavery as it relates to human trafficking, and examines current and emerging trends in combating this human rights violation. Various best practices are explored in the realm of anti-trafficking campaigns and programs. A primary focus of this paper is providing a model for combating trafficking through the engagement of the general public. Therefore social media advocacy is also defined and analyzed in the …

Defeatism Defeated, Max Baker-Hytch, Matthew A. Benton
SPU Works
Many epistemologists are enamored with a defeat condition on knowledge. In this paper we present some implementation problems for defeatism, understood along either internalist or externalist lines. We then propose that one who accepts a knowledge norm of belief, according to which one ought to believe only what one knows, can explain away much of the motivation for defeatism. This is an important result, because on the one hand it respects the plausibility of the intuitions about defeat shared by many in epistemology; but on the other hand, it obviates the need to provide a unified account of defeat which …

Frank Lundahl (1858-1932) was a Swedish-American artist born in Rock Island. A painter of interior murals by trade, his works in Augustana’s collections focus on the world around him, calling our attention to the everyday beauty of our region, this place we call home.

Swenson Center Faculty Research Stipend Reports
As a migration scholar, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to spend a week this summer conducting research in the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. During my three years at Augustana, my students and I have explored urban development and recent patterns of immigrant and refugee settlement in the Quad Cities. In places like the Floreciente neighborhood of Moline, located about a mile from Augustana’s campus on the west side of the city, the Mexican and Mexican American community is transforming a landscape that had already been influenced by a much earlier wave of migration from Sweden.

The Potential Convergence Of Religious And Secular Interests In Voltaire's Traite Sur La Tolerance, John C. O'Neal
The Potential Convergence Of Religious And Secular Interests In Voltaire's Traite Sur La Tolerance, John C. O'Neal
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
When the Toulouse parliament condemned Jean Calas to death on March 9, 1762, and had him executed on the following day, Voltaire took up his pen to denounce what he saw as a brutal act of intolerance against a Protestant. Although Henry IV had signed the Edict of Nantes in 1598, guaranteeing freedom of conscience for all religions, Louis XIV revoked this edict in 1685 and claimed Catholicism as the one official religion of France. Already well known for his anticlericalism, Voltaire questioned a number of religious practices. But in his Traite sur la tolerance he does not reject religion …
