Making Waves: Bacon, Manley, And The Shifting Rhetorics Of Opulent At(A)Lantis, Alex Cahill Nielsen Jan 2015

Making Waves: Bacon, Manley, And The Shifting Rhetorics Of Opulent At(A)Lantis, Alex Cahill Nielsen

ETD Archive

In the modern critical environment, there has been a renewed interest in the role that proto-feminist and feminist satires have played in the development of cultural commentary and the modern novel. Lesser-studied works have seen several new approaches applied by critics such as Rachel Carnell, Rebecca Bullard, and Ruth Herman, who have focused on the role of the genre of "secret history" in the popular growth of the novel as a form for political dissent. Secret history, which can offer revelatory glimpses into the contemporary scandals and governance of the female authors of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is a …

Ring Rust, Suzanne D. Mcwhorter

ETD Archive

The world of professional wrestling, or in the case of Ring Rust, semi-professional wrestling, houses its own culture, and its own sense of family and identity. The two chapters presented here are part of the larger work set in this world and told from four perspectives: Brooks "Jack Raptor" Murphy, star of the Rustbelt Wrestling Alliance Vivian Murphy, his estranged sister Gunnar "The Swedish Storm" Olsen, whose career is intertwined with Jack's and Maxine Hunter, local wrestling blogger. Though only Brooks and Vivian are represented in this excerpt, the lives of all four of these characters intertwine. The relationship between …

“I Am Not Free While [Anyone] Is Unfree”: A Proposal And Framework For Enmarginalized Feminist Policy Analysis, Avina Ross Jan 2015

“I Am Not Free While [Anyone] Is Unfree”: A Proposal And Framework For Enmarginalized Feminist Policy Analysis, Avina Ross

Social Work Student Works

This paper introduces a new feminist approach and framework to policy analysis. As an integration of intersectionality, Black feminist thought and endarkened feminist epistemology, enmarginalized feminist policy analysis (EFPA) offers an intersectional and flexible scope in a framework to assess policy for a diversity of populations, focusing on groups who are forced to live marginal and oppressed lives. Discussion is provided on existing approaches and frameworks in addition to an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of EFPA. A nine-component framework, which includes a section for analyst reflexivity, is provided to guide users in conducting EFPA. The author concludes with implications …

Religious Accommodations And The Common Good, Mark David Hall Jan 2015

Religious Accommodations And The Common Good, Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Citizens, civic leaders, and jurists interested in good public policy should look to history as a guide to the impact of laws and constitutional provisions aimed at protecting religious actors. American civic leaders and jurists, at both the national and state levels, have long created significant protections for religious Americans who object to neutral, generally applicable laws. At their best, Americans have agreed that government should not force individuals to violate their sincerely held religious convictions unless it has compelling reasons for doing so. Moreover, the nation and the states have still been able to achieve important policy objectives in …

Early Medieval World (Chapter 2 Of World History, A Short, Visual Introduction), Caitlin Corning Jan 2015

Early Medieval World (Chapter 2 Of World History, A Short, Visual Introduction), Caitlin Corning

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The fifth through the tenth centuries was a period of significant transformation for Europe. As a result of the Germanic invasions and the collapse of the economy, the last Roman Emperor in the West, Romulus Augustulus (475-76), was deposed in 476. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire would continue in a much-truncated form until the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453. Not only did the Germanic tribes continue their expansion into the Roman territories in the fourth and fifth centuries, the Arabs conquered substantial territory in the seventh and eighth, and Viking, Magyar, and Arab attacks tore apart Europe in …

Arts Of The Medieval Cathedrals: Studies On Architecture, Stained Glass, And Sculpture In Honor Of Anne Prache, Kathleen Nolan Jan 2015

Arts Of The Medieval Cathedrals: Studies On Architecture, Stained Glass, And Sculpture In Honor Of Anne Prache, Kathleen Nolan

Books by Hollins Faculty and Staff

The touchstones of Gothic monumental art in France - the abbey church of Saint-Denis and the cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, and Bourges - form the core of this collection dedicated to the memory of Anne Prache. The essays reflect the impact of Prache’s career, both as a scholar of wide-ranging interests and as a builder of bridges between the French and American academic communities. Thus the authors include scholars in France and the United States, both academics and museum professionals, while the thematic matrix of the book, divided into architecture, stained glass, and sculpture, reflects the multiple media explored by …

Dickens And Eliot: A Tale Of Two Feminists, Matthew Thompson Jan 2015

Dickens And Eliot: A Tale Of Two Feminists, Matthew Thompson

The Corinthian

It has been (and will continue to be) argued that authors always portray characters of their own sex in a more complete way. It is because of this, and well-known facts about the time period during which he wrote, that Charles Dickens is rarely considered a feminist writer. George Eliot, who wrote in nearly the same time period, is often lauded as an exemplary feminist writer. But through his characterization of Miss Havisham and Estella in Great Expectations, Dickens shows himself to be more than equal to Eliot in that field of writing. Her own Maggie Tulliver in The Mill …

Three Late Medieval Kilns From The Athenian Agora, Camilla Mackay Jan 2015

Three Late Medieval Kilns From The Athenian Agora, Camilla Mackay

Library Staff Research and Scholarship

This article presents pottery from three late medieval kilns excavated in the Athenian Agora in the 1930s. Wasters from the kilns provide important proof of the local production of lead-glazed wares that come into use in the early Ottoman period and are found in surveys and excavations throughout Attica and Boeotia. Some of this pottery has been identified as maiolica, but portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis has not indicated the presence of tin in the glaze. While distinctive in appearance, the pottery from these kilns seems to continue the ceramic tradition of earlier medieval Athens.

Nature And The "Dark Pastoral" In Goethe's Werther, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2015

Nature And The "Dark Pastoral" In Goethe's Werther, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Celebrating the natural harmony of the stream, grasses, and the beautiful wellspring where the peasant girls come to fetch water in Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther, 1774), Goethe’s eponymous hero embraces pastoral nature with a passion. He partakes in a traditional pastoral setting of rustic, idyllic landscapes rife with “simple” peasant folk, happy children, and agricultural pursuits far from the complexities of urban or courtly life—at least in the first part of the novel. This idealized pastoral framework with its peaceful green hills and valleys appears isolated from—or, more precisely, abstracted from—the urban sites where …
