I Remember: Chicago Veterans Of War, Chris Green, Jim Fairhall Jan 2015

I Remember: Chicago Veterans Of War, Chris Green, Jim Fairhall

Big Shoulders Books

I Remember: Chicago Veterans of War weaves together the memories of fifty veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Throughout the book, each veteran speaks in a series of “I remember” statements labeled by a number, not a name. This anonymous structure foregrounds the similarities of all wars. The effect is of one veteran speaking of the shock and scale of every modern war. I Remember is available free in both digital and print format.

What Are They Learning? Assessing Theatre/Dance Performance Experiences, Andrew Vorder Bruegge, Meg Schriffen

College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty Publications

The model of assessment will demonstrate how to align the assessment of production activity with learning goals set by accrediting bodies, the institution, the department, and the specific program. This alignment insures that measurement of student learning is standardized across the students’ entire experience in the program (courses, performances, rehearsals, technical preparations, etc.) Examples of indirect and direct measurement instruments will be presented.

Der And Policy: The Recommendation Of A Topic, Thomas A. Cavanaugh Jan 2015

Der And Policy: The Recommendation Of A Topic, Thomas A. Cavanaugh

Philosophy

If viable, DER justifies certain individual acts that–by definition–have two effects. Presumably, it would in some fashion (at the very least, redundantly) justify policies concerning the very same acts. By contrast, acts that sometimes have a good effect and sometimes have a bad effect do not have the requisite two effects such that DER can justify them immediately. Yet, a policy concerning numerous such acts would have the requisite good and bad effects. For while any one such act would lack the relevant two effects, a series of such acts and a policy governing such a series would have them. …

Argentina's Trials: New Ways Of Writing Memory, Susana Kaiser Jan 2015

Argentina's Trials: New Ways Of Writing Memory, Susana Kaiser

Media Studies

The last Argentine dictatorship (1976–1983) left a legacy of an estimated 30,000 desaparecidos (disappeared people). Three decades later, the wall of impunity is now being torn down. Trials are spreading across Argentina and hundreds of repressors are being judged. These trials are public spaces for collective memory making, political arenas for competing memory battles, and forums in which new information and perspectives about what happened under state terrorism continually emerge. Through the testimonies of survivors and the claims of the defense teams we gain new knowledge about the level and scope of the human rights abuses, how the repressive apparatus …

Playing The Whore: Illicit Union And The Biblical Typology Of Promiscuity In The Toledot Yeshu Tradition, Natalie Latteri Jan 2015

Playing The Whore: Illicit Union And The Biblical Typology Of Promiscuity In The Toledot Yeshu Tradition, Natalie Latteri

Theology & Religious Studies

Toledot Yeshu, or “Stories about Jesus,” have been transmitted by Jews for centuries but only recently have begun to garner signifcant scholarly attention as part of a tradition of anti-Christian polemic. This paper contends that the varied depictions of Jesus’ conception in the Toledot corpus refect the intracommunal issues of forced conversion, apostasy, and overfamiliarity with non-Jews. The theme was neither new to the Toledot nor a product of the late-antique and medieval contexts that Jewish stories of Jesus frst circulated in. Rather, it echoes biblical representations of, and admonishments against, illicit relationships with non-Jews which ancient authors commonly depicted …

Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt Jan 2015

Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt

Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research

Concern about Communists in education was a central preoccupation in the U.S. through the middle decades of the twentieth century. Focusing on post-secondary and adult education and on fields related to composition and rhetoric, this essay offers an overview of the surprisingly diverse contexts in which Communist educators worked. Some who taught in Communist- sponsored "separatist" institutions pioneered the kinds of radical pedagogical theories now most often attributed to Paulo Freire. Communist educators who taught in "mainstream" institutions, however, less often saw their pedagogy as a mode of political action; their activism was deployed mainly in civic life rather than …

Lgbtq Relationally-Based Positive Psychology: An Inclusive And Systemic Framework, Daniela Domínguez Jan 2015

Lgbtq Relationally-Based Positive Psychology: An Inclusive And Systemic Framework, Daniela Domínguez

Psychology

Positive psychologists have contributed to our understandings of how positive emotions and flexible cognition enhance resiliency. However, positive psychologists’ research has been slow to address the relational resources and interactions that help non-heterosexual families overcome adversity. Addressing overlooked LGBTQ and systemic factors in positive psychology, this article draws on family resilience literature and LGBTQ literature to theorize a systemic positive psychology framework for working with non-heterosexual families. We developed the LGBTQ Relationally-Based Positive Psychology framework that integrates positive psychology’s strengths-based perspective with the systemic orientation of Walsh’s (1996) family resilience framework along with the cultural considerations proposed by LGBTQ family …
