The courtroom was lighted with a bright, blinding flash. The twelve selected ministers of the jury, representing all religious denominations, stared solemnly at the defendant who sat in the seat of judgment. With flrm straight lips but in a manner not Unkind, the foreman arose, and said the jury was ready to hear the evidence. The defendant, a sailor with an oil-soaked uniform that showed spots of blood on his shoulders and chest, stood and faced the jury.

In a way, the morning opened like any other morning. Peter wakened, scratched an ear, rubbed an eye, straightened out a leg that had been folded like a bent wing beneath him. Jim "Pee Wee" Martin, an World War II Army Veteran, parachuted into Normandy on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at the age of 93. Jim was in the now famous 506th parachute infantry regiment featured in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. He was nicknamed “Pee Wee” because he was the lightest man in the unit. At the end of the war, Jim returned to Xenia to build a house, raise a family, and live a modest life. But when Jim got online and connected with social media, his popularity reached celebrity status.

Dr. Ludlow is Associate Professor of English and Coordinator of Women’s Studies. Her research interests include representations of abortion and reproduction in contemporary literature and writing, abortion discourse, and activist pedagogy. Exploring author Julia Alvarez’s claim that there are truths that “can only finally be understood by fiction, only finally be redeemed by the imagination,” her presentation is about the power of the humanities to redeem complex truths in a transitional historical moment in U.S. reproductive rights.
