The Most Unforgettable Character I'Ve Met, David Craig
Manuscripts
(First Place, Essay Division, 1946, Butler University Literary Contest)
The most unforgettable character I've met was my stepfather. In general stepfathers aren't very popular with their stepchildren, but he was an exception in this respect as he was in so many others.

Manuscripts
(First Place, Short Story Division, 1946, Butler Literary Contest)
Edna lifted the wilted wild rose petal from the dusty, little table and looked at it carefully as if it were some lovely, cherished thing. She turned slightly as she heard the uneven step of her father on the porch, and then she smiled slowly.

Veterans' Voices on WYSO
Approximately 300,000 Post-9/11 veterans are identified as having post-traumatic stress disorder in this country but it’s estimated that only 1 in 3 asks for help. For those who do, different kinds of therapy can help to manage the after effects of trauma. Many veterans find comfort from pets.

"Current research tells us that kids who witness or experience hard things actually lose some ability to make good choices. It’s not that they won’t or don’t want to make the good choice…sometimes they just can’t. When kids are chronically exposed to trauma the part of their brain that helps them with language, flexibility, and mood regulation actually shrinks. ... The good news is that God made our brains so thoughtfully that they can actually grow and change."

Questions And Inquiry: Some Epistemological Applications, Jason Rourke
Questions And Inquiry: Some Epistemological Applications, Jason Rourke
Dissertations - ALL
Abstract: A recent and innovative research program in epistemology aims to connect the related phenomena of questions and inquiry with epistemological concerns. This dissertation project contributes to that program, taking as its inspiration the contrastive theory of knowledge developed by Jonathan Schaffer in a series of recent papers. The dissertation is comprised of three main parts. I begin by articulating a positive account of the evaluation of knowledge attributions, an account that aims to respect the basic insights of Schaffer's contrastivism while situating them in a modal framework that makes manifest the utility of questions for epistemological theorizing. Then I …

Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Quaker Studies
Postmodernism is ushering in radical change for the Church. Some theologians argue that this change, especially given the discontinuities between modernism and postmodernism, affords new opportunities. Because of these changes there is a decline in many Christian traditions in the West, but there is also a renaissance of ' emerging churches'. The same can be said for Quakers who are experiencing a renaissance of their own. 'Convergent Friends' are a decentralized, international, body of Quakers seeking to renew their tradition through a growing awareness of the need to interact with culture missionally. Their origins and interactions are unique to Convergence …

'The Journeys Of George Fox, 1652-1653': Interim Report On A Research Project And Website, Meg Twycross, Hilary Hinds, Alison Findlay
Quaker Studies
The research project on 'Early Quakers in the North West' recently issued a test version of the opening sections of the website in which it will publish its findings. Here the project member responsible for the website's construction describes its structure and ethos, and explains why web presentation is particularly well suited to this topic, as a research tool as well as a means of publication. At present the account by George Fox of his travels through 'the 1652 country' provides the organising narrative thread. A new electronic edition of the three versions of Fox's Journal for 1652-53 showcases how …
'Upon The Quakers And The Quietists': Quietism, Power And Authority In Late Seventeenth-Century France, And Its Relation To Quaker History And Theology, Elaine Pryce
Quaker Studies
This article poses a number of questions around its subject matter, from which I develop some explanatory frameworks and further conceptualizations of Quietism. It addresses, primarily, the questions: What is Quietism? What were the issues of power and authority leading to the infamous Quietist Controversy in late seventeenth-century France? And subsequently, what is the nature of Quietism's connection to the Quaker theological tradition?
Mary Morris Knowles: Devout, Worldly, And 'Gay'?, Judith Jennings
Mary Morris Knowles: Devout, Worldly, And 'Gay'?, Judith Jennings
Quaker Studies
This essay examines three themes relating to the beliefs and actions of Mary Morris Knowles (1733-1807) as a devout Quaker woman, incorporates new research and places her in multiple contexts within eighteenth-century Quakerism. Considering Knowles in relation to the themes of self and collective identity, her concepts and practices of womanhood in the private, social and public spheres and her theology and religious practices raises new questions about Quakerliness, or ways of being a Quaker. How wide and diverse was the spectrum of behavior considered appropriate for a Quaker woman and did it change over time? Was it possible for …
Mary Birkett Card (1774-1817): Struggling To Become The Ideal Quaker Woman, Josephine Teakle
Mary Birkett Card (1774-1817): Struggling To Become The Ideal Quaker Woman, Josephine Teakle
Quaker Studies
This paper is based on The Works of Mary Birkett Card 1774 -1817, an edition of the manuscript collection made by her son Nathaniel Card in 1834. The collection contains different genres and spans Card's life from childhood to near her death, forming a unique record of one woman's experience at the tum of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Themes of self and identity, women's participation in public and private spheres, and ideological differences are apparent in Mary Birkett Card's struggle, in life and text, to become 'the ideal Quaker woman'. One particular focus is on her negotiation of …
New Perspectives On Eighteenth-Century British Quaker Women, Edwina Newman, Judith Jennings
New Perspectives On Eighteenth-Century British Quaker Women, Edwina Newman, Judith Jennings
Quaker Studies
In the last three decades, research on eighteenth-century British Quaker women reflects a range of different methodological perspectives. Recent studies focus on female spiritual development and sense of identity in the formative seventeenth century. New influences and changing contexts in the eighteenth century, especially Quietism, engendered new themes: a continuing concern with self and collective identity; theology and practices; and participation in the public and private spheres. The experiences and perceptions ofBritish Quaker women in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries reflect the influence of Deism and Evangelicalism. Despite these valuable studies, further research and systematic analysis is needed, …
Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt
Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt
Quaker Studies
This article reports a recent investigation of the relationship between the spiritual and academic journeys of seven scholars whose fields involve the study of aspects of Sikh and/ or Hindu faith. Several frameworks for the study are suggested, including Quaker encounter with Indic religions; the changing nature of social diversity; and the insider/ outsider discussion in religious studies. Discussion of their experience highlights the participants' faith background and promptings to attend a Quaker Meeting for Worship as well as the initial impetus to their academic specialism, their guiding values and their self-identification. Multiple connections between the two 'journeys' emerge-not least …
