SURGE
Yesterday I was sick to my stomach. Literally.
I tossed and turned all night, woke up and felt sick, and spent the first two hours of my day in bed trying to calm down while. I was worrying that I was a bad friend, student, and girlfriend. The hardest part was that I was criticizing myself for having these insecurities. It’s tough to get out of that cycle, but it’s what I need to do. [excerpt]

Chinese Americans searched for their identities and strove for achievement in the United States. Respect for the elders is considered as one of the outstanding virtues of Chinese culture. The importance of this trait is underscored via its record-keeping traditions and clan genealogies called Jiapu which was fostered by centuries of Confucian philosophy. Some of the history of Chinese in America can in fact be found not only in China but also internationally around the globe. In this paper, the author will share her experiences and ideas on building and enhancing family history research through understanding the major components in …

Partners In The Gospel: A Study In Dual And Multi-Parish Ministry, Paul Winningham
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Problem: Since it has not been researched how the members of Grace Lutheran Church of Uniontown (MO) and Zion Lutheran Church of Longtown (MO) understand and value their partnership in the Grace-Zion Joint Lutheran Parish, this project seeks to gain increasing clarity as to the vision Grace and Zion Lutheran Churches have of themselves, and of the partnership they share.
This study employed both questionnaire and focus groups to gather both quantitative and qualitative data in this dual parish or multiple parish about the perception participants have of their own congregation, as well as the partnership they share.

The New York Times called Shanghai Quartet’s performance of the Ravel String Quartet in F Major “passionate…driven, elegant and nuanced.” In this program, the Quartet pairs it with Beethoven’s String Quartet no. 12 in E-flat Major, op. 127, and the world premiere of a new work by acclaimed young composer Du Yun. Tentatively titled Tattooed in Snow, the new work is inspired by the temporary and fragile crystallization of art in nature and in space, as well as by chant and poetry.

Slavery's End Deserves A 150th Celebration, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
As the 150th anniversary of the Civil War winds down toward its conclusion in the spring, it's difficult not to look back on the four years of this sesquicentennial and wonder why it all seemed so lackluster. Unlike the centennial in 1961-65, Congress decided not to create a national commission. And President Obama took a pass on the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.
But the most surprisingly lackluster remembrance was the one that just slipped by us - the 150th anniversary of the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery in the United States. [excerpt …

“For It Acordeth Noght To Kinde”: Remediating Gower’S Confessio Amantis In Machinima, Sarah L. Higley
Accessus
Visual adaptation of a medieval text, as tempting as it is in film of any kind, is never an easy conversion, and all the more so if the original is as formally structured as John Gower’s Confessio Amantis. This essay examines the philosophy and difficulties of making a “medieval motion picture” (animated and narrated by the author) reflect the message of three of Gower’s tales (“The Travelers and the Angel,” “Canace and Machaire,” “Florent”) as well as the multimedia properties of the manuscripts that house them, their illuminations beckoning us into colorful virtual worlds. In referencing theories of adaptation, …

Accessus
Co-editors Georgiana Donavin and Eve Salisbury are delighted to feature the work of medievalist and machinimatographer Sarah L. Higley in this issue of Accessus. In a machinima production that debuted during the Third International Congress of the John Gower Society at the University of Rochester (30 June through 3 July, 2014), Higley refashions three tales from the Confessio Amantis for her film The Lover's Confession. In this issue of Accessus, we present the film and Higley's commentary on the intersections between her creative work with machinima and scholarly issues surrounding "The Tale of the Travelers and the …

Ask Caroline Shaw – composer, violinist, vocalist, and now youngest-ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music – to program a concert for the two ensembles with which she performs, and what do you get? An incredible evening of music that celebrates the works of three breathtakingly original composers, including Shaw’s own Partita for 8 Voices, declared a “dazzling, emotionally generous take on a Baroque dance suite” by The New York Times; the world premiere of a new version of her multimedia tour de force, Ritornello, featuring elements of American hymnody and Baroque music; Gavin Bryars’ heartrending Jesus’ Blood Never …

Librarian Publications & Presentations
Latino communities have long been parts of our society and culture, but many people, including in the mainstream media, have only recently noticed that 1/6 of the U.S. population is of Latino or Hispanic heritage. The United States is the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, trailing only Mexico. This underrepresented demographic group is starting to receive more recognition in U.S. culture, including in its literature. Gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons make up another minority group that is increasingly visible in our culture. The subject of this bibliography is the intersection of these two minority groups, GLBT Latino/as. …

Maihan Wali describes herself as “one of those kids that always wanted to help.”
So when she noticed that many of her peers in her class struggled with reading and writing, she started a peer to peer literacy program with the help of her sister and a few friends. She was only 8 years old. [excerpt]
