Shakespeare And School Counseling, Nick Abel Mar 2015

Shakespeare And School Counseling, Nick Abel

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In the ongoing search for therapeutic tools and techniques to use with students from kindergarten through the 12th grade (K-12), it is unlikely that many school counselors have considered the work of William Shakespeare. Generally confined to upper-level high school English classrooms, the work of “The Bard” is more likely to be considered an obstacle for students to overcome than a resource to enhance their academic, career, or personal/social development (Anderson & Anderson, 2003). While Shakespeare may not have a place in every school counseling program, below are some possibilities for using his work in contemporary K-12 settings.

Elevating The Other: A Theoretical Approach To Alexander Mcqueen, Keri Rowe Mar 2015

Elevating The Other: A Theoretical Approach To Alexander Mcqueen, Keri Rowe

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between art and fashion in order to first, justify fashion as an art form, and second, demonstrate the applicability of critical theory to the study of fashion through an examination of Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2006 menswear collection, titled “Killa,” presented in Milan, Italy, in 2005. “Killa,” loosely based on William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies and its 1963 film adaptation, opens with crisp, white, tailored suits worn by neatly groomed models. Steadily throughout the collection, these tailored suits are exchanged for wide-legged, cropped shorts, and tanks in browns and beiges. By the end, …

Theses and Dissertations

The following is a meta-commentary of the article, “Marriage and the City: Fatal Displacement in La Maison du chat-qui-pelote,” co-authored by Dr. Anca Mitroi Sprenger and myself, Laurel Cummins. The article will soon be submitted for publication, and this commentary contains an annotated bibliography of all our primary and secondary sources as well as an account of the origin of the argument and the process of writing the article. Our article is based upon an analysis of La Maison du chat-qui-pelote, a story authored by Honoré de Balzac within his seminal collection La Comédie humaine. In the …

“Healing A Hurting Heart”: Femrite's Use Of Narrative And Community As Catalysts For Traumatic Healing, Candice Taylor Stratford Mar 2015

“Healing A Hurting Heart”: Femrite's Use Of Narrative And Community As Catalysts For Traumatic Healing, Candice Taylor Stratford

Theses and Dissertations

FEMRITE, the Ugandan Women Writers Association, was created in 1996, and over the last twenty years, it has become the largest and most successful women's writing group in East Africa and one of the most influential literary communities on the African continent. It has become an essential element of Ugandan literary society, and a large proportion of its writings reflect various forms of trauma, begging an engagement with trauma theories. I will argue that through strategies of narrative recuperation and the establishment of communities, FEMRITE has created avenues for women writers, their subjects, and their readers to engender healing from …

Crisis Masculina En Dos Cuentos De Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Lucía Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations

A Importância De Nara Leão Para O Descobrimento De Grandes Compositores: O Desenvolvimento Da Música Popular Brasileira, Renata Godoy Tymoschenko Mar 2015

A Importância De Nara Leão Para O Descobrimento De Grandes Compositores: O Desenvolvimento Da Música Popular Brasileira, Renata Godoy Tymoschenko

Theses and Dissertations

Engineering As A Mode Of Acknowledging Worth: A Response To Wolterstorff’S Kuyper Prize Lecture, Juan Pablo Benitez Gonzalez Mar 2015

Engineering As A Mode Of Acknowledging Worth: A Response To Wolterstorff’S Kuyper Prize Lecture, Juan Pablo Benitez Gonzalez

Student Work

This paper is a response to Nicholas Wolterstorff's 2014 Kuyper Prize Lecture given in the Miller Chapel at Princeton Theological Seminary and titled "Art, Justice and Liturgy". Its purpose is to continue Wolterstorff's discussion by considering the affinity that engineering has with art, liturgy, and justice – or, more precisely, the affinity that the practice of scientific innovation and design has with “the actions of paying absorbed attention to some work of the arts, of doing and seeking justice and of enacting the liturgy." It is an attempt to recognize engineering as a mode of "acknowledging goodness".

On Bone Boxes And The Brother Of Jesus, Paul N. Anderson Mar 2015

On Bone Boxes And The Brother Of Jesus, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

As with the other episodes of the CNN special on Finding Jesus, "The Secret Brother of Jesus" builds an understanding of Jesus and his ministry on the basis of recent archaeological finds and known historical facts. In this case, an ossuary (a bone box) discovered in Jerusalem several decades ago bears a remarkable inscription: "James the son of Joseph, brother of Jesus" carved in Aramaic. Archaeologists have determined that the ossuary is authentic, but how about the inscription? Does it also go back to the first century, or was it (or part of it) added later? Inquiring minds want to …

I believe quality design does not always have to be expensive. Using things we currently have and creating something else with it is a great way to be sustainable. Not only are you saving money by re-using and sprucing up old items but you are also creating a unique piece that no one else has! Why buy new when you can re-use?

Also pleasing clients is a tough job but my passion for interior design makes me want to achieve the vision that the clients have and create a space of their dreams by doing it with passion or not …

Interior design is not only a career it is also my passion. I have always had a passion for design especially when it comes to residential spaces. While there are many different rooms in a home I am always drawn to living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. Each room is like a different piece of a puzzle, they can all have their own personality, but still all fit together to create a wonderful home.

I believe it is human nature to want to change the world, to leave your mark. An interior designer has many options to do this through codes, sustainability, and collectively changing the way humans interact in a space. While the aesthetics and functionality of a space are the main goals of a design there are many opportunities to improve on a way of life and this is what I find most important.

My design philosophy is to create an area that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but functional. Whether this is residential or commercial, I want you to feel comfortable about your surroundings. I want you to be able to enjoy the environment around you and feel right at home. This can be with commercial design also. I do not want someone to feel as if they are in a hospital. White walls feel institutional. I want to design places that make you feel at ease and comfortable, even if it is a place you do not necessarily want to be, such …

Most people consider Interior Design to be a luxury and something that only the wealthy and privileged can afford. However, this is not the case; anyone with any budget can have a space that they are proud to call their own. While the wealthy do have the ability to pay to furnish a room without regard to cost, which is not a criteria that alone determines whether or not you have a wonderful space. A more economical family may have to be more prudent with their furnishings purchases, but they still have the right to a beautiful, enjoyable, comfortable home. …

Embracing the elements of design with the elements of nature.

Healthy interiors must draw inspiration from nature through its light, color, and sustainability; creating therapeutic spaces for all users. It is crucial to bridge the gap between all fields of design and cultures, bringing the innovations of healthy interiors to our homes, businesses, hospitals, and all aspects of the design process.

“Yo El Rey”: Philip Ii’S Anglo-Spanish War Correspondence To Diego De Orellana De Chaves And Others, April 1592 – December 1592, Dallin V. Larsen Mar 2015

“Yo El Rey”: Philip Ii’S Anglo-Spanish War Correspondence To Diego De Orellana De Chaves And Others, April 1592 – December 1592, Dallin V. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis transcribes and translates the war correspondence of King Philip II from the year 1592. The original manuscripts are held at the Harold B. Lee Library in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections (Brigham Young University, Provo, UT). The original manuscripts have been diplomatically transcribed meaning that the transcription respects the original orthography, accentuation, abbreviations, and word divisions. For easy comparison, a facsimile of each manuscript has been provided and appears before its corresponding transcription. The translation strategy used is a modified version of a “fluent translation” as described by Lawrence Venuti. Instead of removing all foreign aspects of …

The Irish Experience: Identity And Authenticity In Irish Traditional Music, Elizabeth Graber Mar 2015

The Irish Experience: Identity And Authenticity In Irish Traditional Music, Elizabeth Graber

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Over the last century, Irish traditional music, or “trad,” has become a global phenomenon that has flourished in communities from the United States of America to Japan. A musician need not be Irish in heritage to play and do justice to Irish traditional music or to feel a strong emotional connection to it; yet ethnic ties, real and imagined, constitute a powerful reason to play. The music is inextricably linked with the poetically-titled Emerald Isle even if its musicians are not. In this project, I explore and analyze the many facets of perception of and participation in Irish traditional music, …
