We're Not Doing Enough To End Hate Among Our Children, Simran Jeet Singh
We're Not Doing Enough To End Hate Among Our Children, Simran Jeet Singh
Religion Faculty Research
If we don't fix prejudice when our kids are young, the next generation has no hope of a better country.
Last week, a middle school student from Georgia recorded some of his classmates calling him a “terrorist” and posted it online. Presumably, the kids on his bus tormented him because of his Sikh turban.
The family changed the video’s settings to private, but not before users around the world had already copied the video and reposted it. The video has since gone viral, gaining more than a million combined views from people all over the globe.

The Power Of Speech: Speech-Recognition Software In The Writing Process, Lauren Fine
Student Works
Individual writing conferences—whether in writing centers or as extensions of composition classroom instruction—presume that talk about writing improves students’ writing. Composition scholars have discussed the benefits of prewriting or revising using speech. For instance, Leander and Prior (2004) have show how such conversations between students and teachers make their way into students’ writing. Woerkum (2007) has likewise demonstrated how considering readers’ oral responses can help technical writers integrate natural speech rhythms into their revisions. Elbow (2012) suggests these natural speech rhythms can mitigate several difficulties of writing, from prewriting to revision.

Imagining The Kingdom: The Intersection Of Religion And Violence, Donald Roth
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
"All religions must grapple honestly with issues of violence, both in terms of the limits and means of righteous zeal and in terms of the ultimate goals of the movement. One potentially instructive way for the monotheistic religions to do this may be to ask the question “How do we imagine the Kingdom of God?”

Lancastrians Marched With Dr. King In Selma, Michael J. Birkner
Lancastrians Marched With Dr. King In Selma, Michael J. Birkner
History Faculty Publications
Fifty years after he addressed a crowd in Lancaster’s Penn Square about “the idea that all men are one,” Wayne Glick remembers that moment as if it happened yesterday. Glick’s speech, inviting Lancastrians to participate in the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on behalf of African-American voting rights, is a footnote to Lancaster County history. But the march itself, featured in the popular film “Selma,” helped to change America. [excerpt]
Researching The Restoration Of The Melchizedek Priesthood, Nathan Richardson, Dr. Michael Hubbard Mackay
Researching The Restoration Of The Melchizedek Priesthood, Nathan Richardson, Dr. Michael Hubbard Mackay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many historians, both Mormon and non-Mormon, have developed ideas about the restoration of the priesthood, and there is a rich literature that describes the details of those events. However, the Joseph Smith Papers Project, for which my mentor, Dr. MacKay is an author, has uncovered new information and produced new analysis from their detailed work that will help reinterpret and specify some of the important events of the restoration. This analysis is valuable to both the Church as a whole and to my individual knowledge and testimony of the Church. The ORCA research project in which I have participated has …

Singing The Bible: The Impact Of Haik-Vantoura’S Theory, Hannah Lambert, Shon Hopkin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The use of liturgical music is common to several faiths in today’s society. The purpose of this project was to shed light on the origins and development of cantillation marks in the Hebrew bible and on the development of liturgical music in post-biblical time. Most importantly, this project’s chief purpose was to analyze and demonstrate the impact of Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura’s proposal regarding cantillation on Jewish and Christian liturgical and worship music.

Philology, Anthropology And Poetry In Arthur Waley's Translation Of The Shijing, Qingyang Lin
Philology, Anthropology And Poetry In Arthur Waley's Translation Of The Shijing, Qingyang Lin
Lingnan Theses
The topic of my thesis is Arthur Waley and his translation of the Shijing, or The Book of Songs (1937), as Waley entitled it. The Book of Songs is especially noted for its philological ingenuity, anthropological insight and poetic appeal; during my preliminary research I discovered that there exists an interesting interplay between these three aspects of this translation. In this thesis, I hope to examine the textual and thematic hermeneutics of The Book of Songs.
Waley did not read the Shijing as a scriptural text inscribed with sagely intention and authority; rather, he returned it to its folkloric origin, …
Reevaluating The Bronze And Iron Age Ceramic Evidence Of Biblical Hebron, Christina Nelson, Jeffrey Chadwick
Reevaluating The Bronze And Iron Age Ceramic Evidence Of Biblical Hebron, Christina Nelson, Jeffrey Chadwick
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As the home to several Old Testament prophets such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and King David, Hebron holds a significant role in the biblical narrative and history of the Israelites. Today, the modern city of Hebron is located in the hill country of Judah, most known for the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the Cave of Machpelah. Fifty years ago the site of Tell er-Rumeide/Hebron was excavated by Philip C. Hammond as the American Expedition to Hebron (AEH). He excavated between the years of 1964-1966 until the war of 1967 necessitated his withdrawal. Dr. Hammond willed to Jeffrey R. …
Let's Go To The Carnival: Hybridization Of Heterotopian Spaces In The Films Of Kevin Smith, Anthony L. Sylvester
Let's Go To The Carnival: Hybridization Of Heterotopian Spaces In The Films Of Kevin Smith, Anthony L. Sylvester
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper argues against the charges of puerility in the films of Kevin Smith. I analyze Mallrats (1995), Clerks II (2006) and Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008). To illustrate my contention, I offer close readings of the director's films, particularly the protagonists' bodily/linguistic performances. My efforts will vindicate my assertion that through these specialized performances, through the forceful assertion of their marginal identities, the films' protagonists encroach upon, and finally appropriate, historically dominant spaces. As a result, the spaces they appropriate acquire a new, characteristic hybridity. Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia provides a framework for delineating the dominant …
