Stopping At Stoppard: Decompositional Linguistic Models And Deconstructionism In Stoppard’S The Real Inspector Hound And Arcadia, Erin Gough Apr 2015

Stopping At Stoppard: Decompositional Linguistic Models And Deconstructionism In Stoppard’S The Real Inspector Hound And Arcadia, Erin Gough

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis will develop connections between the decomposition of binaries in the cognitive linguistic model of prototype theory and the deconstructionism of binaries in the literary critical theory of deconstructionism, focusing on Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound to show the operation of the theory in literature and using on Stoppard’s Arcadia as an example of an application of prototype theory as a critical lens. Prototype theory is a linguistically and psychologically-based theory of categorization which rejects the definition of categorization found in classical theory. Deconstructionism is a reaction to and a partial rejection of structuralism, and teaches that language …

Religión, Género Y Contradicción: La Motivación De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Kendall Faris Apr 2015

Religión, Género Y Contradicción: La Motivación De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Kendall Faris

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Mapping Indigenous Self-Determination In Highland Guatemala, Patricia A. Mcanany, Sarah M. Rowe, Israel Quic Cholotio, Evelyn Caniz Menchu, Jose Mendoza Quic

Anthropology Faculty Publications

The challenges of building research partnerships around community mapping are critically reviewed in reference to the politics of heritage and identity among Indigenous Maya communities in highland Guatemala. This paper discusses how the goals and interests of archaeologists meshed with those of indigenous mappers in five communities that chose to participate in the mapping program. Based on responses to a survey about the mapping project, participants report joining in order to enhance self-determination, gain cartographic literacy, and improve life opportunities. Community authority over the project and a broad base of participation (including young and old, male and female) proved essential …

Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, Kristine O'Reilly Apr 2015

Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, Kristine O'Reilly

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The exhibition of the photographic work entitled, Water: Experience, Recognition, Conversance, is the culmination of the artist’s life-long interest in the natural environment. The title also infers a chronological description of how interest in the subject evolved as well as how this document and the exhibition has been constructed and curated.

The concept of the exhibition is to remind or provide a vehicle toward remembrance to those ephemeral instances that we as a species have all experienced. It is intended to incite a response or perhaps inspire an action or a reaction or just a renewed appreciation of one component …

Conscious Delusions, Judith K. Hanacek Apr 2015

Conscious Delusions, Judith K. Hanacek

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Views of the world come from watching, looking, and feeling emotional relationships between people, things, and places. This fabricated series establishes the willingness to believe the images are actual photographic records by combining subjects viewing a variety of images. Metaphorical narratives show a vision of the incongruent world. The engagement begins with a shadow or back of someone or thing looking into the frame. Color, texture, and form within produce a voyeuristic psychological and emotional response. The paradox is what pushes the edges of expectation. Synchronicity of the elements within the images thrust us into a surreal moment. Belief in …

Leave Space, Tammy J. Kordik Apr 2015

Leave Space, Tammy J. Kordik

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Leaves segue into daydreams, which start with the observation of color, light, and transparent quality. Viewing commonplace objects on a daily basis, blindness overcomes, but the shapes of leaves, their colors and how light is seen through them is a captivating stronghold.

The mind is a spatial canvas; a container that holds knowledge, as a canvas holds a subject matter. Daydreaming begins and thoughts spill out from the perimeter of the mind into other areas that hold memories. The experience may be of a past recollection revitalized or new hopes for adventures wishing to be sought.

Painted leaves extending outside …

Outside Spaces, One Artist's Journey, Bonnie L. Schroeder

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The beauty and simplicity of outside spaces often overlooked in a busy world are intimate places to regenerate. There are simple moments in life going on all around us which can be most profound, effortless catalysts triggering memories or creating new ones. Looking at something and interpreting it comes from one’s inner self construed by those defining moments that make who we are, a product of our life experiences. Taking time to day-dream, quiet or settle one’s mind, even if momentarily, transports the viewer to another place, a solemn way to achieve peace of mind. There are gifts all around …

Young Adult Dystopian Literature As Social Change Evolution, Rachel L. Scherzer Apr 2015

Young Adult Dystopian Literature As Social Change Evolution, Rachel L. Scherzer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

In recent years, the mass popularity of young adult dystopian novels has led literary scholars to question the rise in popularity and the impact of such novels. This project explores the social justice potential of dystopian fiction, especially young adult dystopias, to act as a model for the way that rebellion can be an important and useful tool in standing up against injustice in society.

Using Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games, this project argues that young adult dystopian fiction can model for young people a personal evolution in understanding social change and the revolutionary possibility of actively standing up …

On Nine Mile, Allen Morris Apr 2015

On Nine Mile, Allen Morris

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

The photographs of On Nine Mile were made to explore my developing relationship with the place I now inhabit. They compare the reality of a place against preconception and actual experience versus idealized expectations. I made this work to help understand a landscape to which I was transplanted and to which I had no connection. This exhibition is comprised of photographs taken at a section of untilled prairie called Nine Mile that most closely resembled my visual preconception of the Great Plains. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by the mountains, forests, and shoreline that typify the landscape …

Man To Man, Chadric Devin Harms Apr 2015

Man To Man, Chadric Devin Harms

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In athletics, the phrase “man-to-man” refers to a type a defense: one where a single player is paired against another individual. They are in constant competition, and as rivals they relentlessly compare themselves to one another. This colloquial expression, which I use as the title of my thesis, also draws attention to the gendered term “man” as a social construction and signifies the diversity and complexity that exists between one representation of masculinity and another.

Throughout my childhood I felt an overwhelming responsibility and pressure from my stepfather and the small, Midwestern community in which I grew up to participate …

Dear, Whoever You Are, I Don't Care Who You Are, Adrienne Smart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I am an observer. I have always been an observer. I was the child who sat quietly with the adults at dinner parties, listening intently to conversations both literally and figuratively over my head. I was the child my mother could count on to repeat the details she forgot from the phone conversation she had with a friend earlier that day. I was the child who knew all the names of the neighbors, their dogs, the cars they drove, the gossip being spread about them, etc. I’ve always been collecting. But to anyone outside of my trusted circle, I was …

L’Anar I Venir Dels Dramaturgs Catalans: Un Nou Cosmopolitisme, Sharon G. Feldman Apr 2015

L’Anar I Venir Dels Dramaturgs Catalans: Un Nou Cosmopolitisme, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Festival De Lasa2015: La Emergencia De Un "Cine Del Otro"--El "Cine Del Otro" En Emergencia, Claudia Ferman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Michelangelo's Message, Raymond L. Forbes Apr 2015

Michelangelo's Message, Raymond L. Forbes

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

What keeps us from becoming what we can be? Renaissance genius Michelangelo’s ideas about crafting sculpture are a powerful metaphor for the release of our hidden performance potential. The actualizations of inherent potential can be viewed as a creative work performance that synergizes head, heart, and body. Potential is seen as being closely related to the psychological concepts of talents and multiple intelligences. For the global economy, the effective employment of talent, intelligence, and knowledge is projected to be a primary driving force for years to come. For business organizations, investment in the realization of human potential is seen to …

Standardized Testing: Help Or Harm?, Steve Holtrop

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Outside of the halls of education, we have many real-world ways to test knowledge and skills. If we want to teach someone to bake a cake or do a J-stroke in a canoe, we don’t give a paper and pencil test – we look for successful demonstrations of the skills. Even where we need a paper test for some head knowledge stuff, like when we get a driver’s license, the road test is the real proof of the pudding. In school settings, then, what we really need are valid measures of what students know and can do. A well-rounded toolbox …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Christian leaders and managers, in light of and in response to Gods common grace, are capable of building organizational practices that foster employee engagement and promote human flourishing. In this article, we examine what it means for humans to be created in the image of God and therefore to be made to work and to use their unique gifts and strengths in such efforts. We will argue that it is precisely this constructive function of Gods common grace that is the key not only to individual-level flourishing but also to organizational-level and societal-level flourishing as well.

Not Knowing You Know: A New Objection To The Defeasibility Theory Of Knowledge, John N. Williams Apr 2015

Not Knowing You Know: A New Objection To The Defeasibility Theory Of Knowledge, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Foley (2012: 93–98) and Turri (2012: 215–19) have recently given objections to the defeasibility theory of propositional knowledge. Here, I give an objection of a quite different stripe by looking at what the theory must say about knowing that you know. I end with some remarks on how this objection relates to rival theories and how this might be a worry for some of these.

The Backward Clock, Truth-Tracking, And Safety, John N. Williams, Neil Sinhababu Apr 2015

The Backward Clock, Truth-Tracking, And Safety, John N. Williams, Neil Sinhababu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We present Backward Clock, an original counterexample to Robert Nozick’s truth-tracking analysis of propositional knowledge, which works differently from other putative counterexamples and avoids objections to which they are vulnerable. We then argue that four ways of analyzing knowledge in terms of safety, including Duncan Pritchard’s, cannot withstand Backward Clock either.

Determining The Influence Of The Network Time Protocol (Ntp) On The Domain Name Service Security Extension (Dnssec) Protocol, Sherman J. Cold

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent hacking events against Sony Entertainment, Target, Home Depot, and bank Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) fosters a growing perception that the Internet is an insecure environment. While Internet Privacy Concerns (IPCs) continue to grow out of a general concern for personal privacy, the availability of inexpensive Internet-capable mobile devices increases the Internet of Things (IoT), a network of everyday items embedded with the ability to connect and exchange data. Domain Name Services (DNS) has been integral part of the Internet for name resolution since the beginning. Domain Name Services has several documented vulnerabilities; for example, cache poisoning. The solution adopted …

Exploring Successful Women's Ministry Employment: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Churches In Virginia, Melissa Small

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The following qualitative case study explored the phenomenon of successful implementation of a fulltime women's ministry staff position in Southern Baptist churches to provide foundational research for a best practices guide for successful implementation of women's ministers in churches. For the research, successful implementation of women's ministry staff was generally defined as fulltime staff position devoted specifically to women's ministry in a church. The use of interviews and focus groups provided information from the church leaders and women who were directly involved in the phenomenon. The setting took place in two Southern Baptist churches, located in the state of Virginia, …

Your Story Matters: Theatre For Community In Practice With The Boys And Girls Club Of Bloomington-Normal, Sarah Menke

Honors Projects

“Applied Theatre” is a useful umbrella term for all committed to the power of theatre in making a difference to the human life span. It is played in spaces that are not traditionally defined as theatre buildings. The performances include participants who may or may not be skilled in theatre arts and audiences who have a vested interest in the issue taken up by the performance or are members of the community. One category of Applied Theatre is “Theatre for Community.” This theatre provides a platform for individuals to come together, share in stories that unite them, and explore their …

Unleashing Music's Hidden Blueprint: An Analysis Of Mathematical Symmetries Used In Music (Honors), Natalie Hoijer

Papers

The history of the development of mathematics and the development of Western music unleashes fascinating connections between the two fields and illustrates their similarities and dependence on each other. Various branches of mathematics are rooted in music, ranging from mathematical physics in sound frequency, to probability and statistical methods of composing, to the use of the Golden Mean and the Fibonacci Series in music. The human brain's logical functioning left side and creative functioning right side, as studied by psychobiologist Robert Sperry ("Whole Brain Development"), are bridged together in this project as mathematical patterns meld with the art of musical …

Conflicting Perspectives: Chivalry In Twelfth-Century Historiography, Stephanie L. Carlson Apr 2015

Conflicting Perspectives: Chivalry In Twelfth-Century Historiography, Stephanie L. Carlson

Honors Projects, History

Conflicting Perspectives: Chivalry in Twelfth-Century Historiography Chivalry was the dominant social structure of the Middle Ages. Its tenets were limited to the ruling class, but it affected all members of medieval society. Despite its overwhelming prevalence, a definition of chivalry has eluded most historians. Twelfth-century sources range from histories and chronicles of events, to epic poetry based on facts but depicting idealized or demonized characters, to manuals of knightly behavior. Modem perceptions of chivalry are shaped by which sources historians choose to include in their analyses; modem historians get most of their arguments from medieval literature and texts that are …

Pastors As Gatekeepers: Congregational Encounters With Mental Health And Substance Abuse Issues, Curtis J. Vanderwaal, Andrea Opei, Edwin I. Hernandez

The vocation of a pastor is to care for the spiritual needs of a congregation and community. However, as many clergy know well, pastoral care is multifaceted and complex. For example, one of the hats that pastors frequently wear is that of pastoral counselor. Although pastors have traditionally offered support and pastoral care to congregants, they are beginning to spend more hours counseling both congregants and community members. One study indicated that pastors were spending time in pastoral counseling equivalent to that of marriage and family therapists in private practice.1 The same study showed that pastors are encountering persons and …
