“Ab-Soul’S Outro,” “Hiiipower,” And The Vernacular: Kendrick Lamar’S Rap As Literature, Tyler S. Bunzey
“Ab-Soul’S Outro,” “Hiiipower,” And The Vernacular: Kendrick Lamar’S Rap As Literature, Tyler S. Bunzey
Senior Honors Theses
Kendrick Lamar’s “Ab-Soul’s Outro” and “HiiiPower” employ complex patterns of Signifyin(g), testifyin’, and other classical African-American literary tropes in order to construct a nuanced style. Lamar creates a double-voiced text not only within his narrative, but also within the form itself. Lamar plays on rap's unique status in African-American literature as an oral text; it is an extension of the vernacular. Through this oral text, Lamar decentralizes the Eurocentric focus of classical interpretation and qualification of literature to a new Afrocentric perspective that privileges the oral text. These raps are complex, wrapped up in their current context along with a …

Neither Here Nor There: A Poetic Inquiry, Jillian Schwab

As one of many Arcadia students who have elected to spend a semester abroad, I still find myself digesting my experiences in Cork City, Ireland in many facets of my daily life. Processing my own cultural acclimation has been, at times, a struggle to comprehend. The following poems represent similar processes of both American and international students. While the circumstances of each student vary, their perceptions of ever-changing cultural stimuli have remarkable connections. Questions of identity, personal development, and transcending social nuances arose in a variety of ways with my participants. My aim was to craft those similarities and differences …
"Same Rules Apply": Analyzing Image And Identity In Irvine Welsh's "Filth" In Relation To The Scottish Independence Movement, Samantha Cartaino
"Same Rules Apply": Analyzing Image And Identity In Irvine Welsh's "Filth" In Relation To The Scottish Independence Movement, Samantha Cartaino
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
The purpose of this paper is to examine Irvine Welsh’s 1998 book and 2014 film version of “Filth” through a psychoanalytic lens. Using Jacques Lacan’s theory of the Self and the Other, it can be determined that Bruce Robertson is the Self and the image of his absent wife Carole is the Other since he bases his own identity off of her. The changing reasons why Bruce kills himself in the book and film mimic the reasons behind the Scottish independence movements of 1979, 1997 and 2014. Therefore, it can be determined that Welsh deliberately writes Bruce Robertson to mirror …
People's Perception Of Anime, Jonathan Patterson
People's Perception Of Anime, Jonathan Patterson
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
There is very little information regarding anime/manga to be found online and when you do find a scholarly article it is biased against anime/manga. This survey is the opposite being biased positive towards anime/manga. Not many people are fully aware of what anime is and only see it as Pokemon and childish cartoons but anime is much more than that. It is important to find out people's perception of anime to fully understand what the majority of people think of the medium. I designed a survey to approach this situation and asked as many different people as possible.
Does Your Personality Trait Affect Behavior On Social Media, Paige Brooks
Does Your Personality Trait Affect Behavior On Social Media, Paige Brooks
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
The purpose of this research was to find whether personality trait affects behavior on social media. An online survey was made to determine personality trait and specific behaviors seen on social media. The survey was distributed online. Through the data I collected I found that extroverts use social media more than introverts and introverts do use game, music, and entertainment apps more than extroverts do. I found that extroverts do comment more than introverts. Extroverts were heavily concentrated in the frequently post and rarely post sections, whereas, introverts were clustered in the very rarely post and rarely post sections. I …

Graphic Novels In The English Language Arts: Teacher Use Of Multiple Texts And Literacies In The Classroom, Emmy Talian , '15
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis examines the how and why of use of graphic texts in the teaching practice of six secondary English teachers. Through a semi-structured interview study, I investigated how they discussed their use of graphic texts, focusing on how they taught the visual portions, why they chose the texts they did, as well as how these texts fit into their larger curriculum. I found that teachers' attention to visual and multimodal potential in graphic texts exists on a spectrum, ranging from a lack of focus to primary focus in the course. Their reasons behind using these texts included the importance …

My documentary follows two families 4 years after the Tunisian Revolution. All members in the Daly family from Sidi Bouzid participated in the revolution, and the Laroussi family in La Goulette had two brothers martyred on January 14th, 2011. The film explores the effects of the revolution – emotional, economic, and social – on all the various family members. As we get glimpses into the daily life of two main characters, we see that reactions to the revolution are diverse, although the notion of the ‘Tunisian exception’ is held up to scrutiny by the overwhelmingly negative reactions to …

For a long time, Nepal has been an exotic destination for adventurers and spiritual wanderers. Geographically, there are no comparisons. “The country is vertical,” said Jagan Biswarka as he pointed across Phewa Lake to the snow-capped mountains. “You can see the 8000 meter from 800 meter. This will be one of the best playgrounds in the world. Nowhere in Nepal. Nowhere in the world.” Mads Mathiasen, a Danish expatriate agrees. “I think very few people realizes how big a contrast there is in Nepal from seventy-one meters above sea level – the lowest place in Nepal – to eight-thousand eight-hundred …
A Resistance, Remembered? Remembrance, Commemoration And The Parallel System In Prishtina, Kosovo, Conner Gordon
A Resistance, Remembered? Remembrance, Commemoration And The Parallel System In Prishtina, Kosovo, Conner Gordon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Though the 1999 war that liberated Kosovo from Serbian control is over fifteen years in the past, memories of the 1990s still remain in a state of chaos. This paper approaches the development of these collective memories through interviews with Prishtina residents about the memories and legacy of Ibrahim Rugova’s parallel structures in the 1990s. Though they draw from similar narratives as memories of the Kosovo Liberation Army’s armed resistance, memories of the nonviolent resistance play a vastly different and largely underrepresented role in current Kosovar Albanian public discourse. Through competing deployments of resistance memories, disproportionate memorialization of Kosovo’s violent …
Internal Migration: The Women Behind Bali’S Tourism Industry, Stephanie Skinner
Internal Migration: The Women Behind Bali’S Tourism Industry, Stephanie Skinner
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Internal migration in constantly increasing in Indonesia and the island of Bali is a popular destination for many of these immigrants who wish to try their luck in Bali’s tourism industry. One the most significant trends in internal migration has been the participation of autonomous young women, however, often the migration discourse does not adequately address gender-specific facets. This study explores the expectations and realities of Indonesian women’s internal immigration to Bali and is predominantly, based on qualitative research methods. The study consisted of singular semi-structured interviews with four young women who worked in Bali’s tourism industry in the Badung …
Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This paper argues that evangelization takes place within the context of globalization, the phenomenon that integrates the economic, cultural, social, political and religious dimensions of human existence towards improved standard of living for humanity. While acknowledging the potential dangers of globalization, especially the expanding income disparity, marginalization, secularization, consumerism, the tendency towards monoculturalism and imperialism, the author advocates daily personal encounter with the person of Jesus as the springboard of Christian spirituality. This paper concentrates on the impact of globalization on African Catholicism’s appropriation of Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium for a new evangelization and recommends important changes in …

“I’Ve Taken My Own Power”: Insights Into Women’S Empowerment And Its Effectiveness In Different Ngos In Cape Town, Molly Willeford
“I’Ve Taken My Own Power”: Insights Into Women’S Empowerment And Its Effectiveness In Different Ngos In Cape Town, Molly Willeford
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The research outlined in this study examines different views on women’s empowerment in Cape Town, South Africa. Although a new Constitution and a new democracy promises equal opportunities for men and women, vast inequalities can still be seen throughout most of the country, with the city of Cape Town being no exception. There are numerous non-government organizations in Cape Town, most working towards what they call “the empowerment of South African women.” But what does empowerment mean for the workers and volunteers within these NGOs? The three participants in this study all belong to different organizations in the Cape Town …
Youth Narratives Of The Conflict In Northern Uganda, Ellen Eichelberger
Youth Narratives Of The Conflict In Northern Uganda, Ellen Eichelberger
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Narratives are an essential method of communication that create windows into human experiences. Narratives are also responsible for generating the societies in which they are told, or are shaped indelibly by the societies generated by more powerful narratives. In a post-conflict environment where society has been destroyed by decades of violence, the power of narratives to influence society is heightened. Such a postconflict environment is that of northern Uganda, as it emerges from the violence of the war between the LRA and the UPDF. Due to the heightened powers of narratives, it is necessary to give attention to what those …
