Midwives And Madonnas: Motherhood And Citizenship In The American Counterculture, Kristen Amelia Blankenbaker
Midwives And Madonnas: Motherhood And Citizenship In The American Counterculture, Kristen Amelia Blankenbaker
Open Access Theses
This project examines how counterculture mothers reimagined female citizenship over three decades of protest and activism. Witnessing the restrictive social contract that bound their suburban mothers to Cold War policies, hippie women sought to dramatically redefine the obligations that structured motherhood. They utilized the experimental structure of communal societies to enact a variation of motherhood that encouraged the development of a highly individualized self, free from the oppressive social structures that shaped Cold War society. Hippie women viewed this elimination of oppressive social structures as a reclamation, rather than a departure from, American values. The collapse of communal societies and …
Future-Proof Designers, Joshua Lowe
Future-Proof Designers, Joshua Lowe
Open Access Theses
The need for professional graphic designers may be fading. Their value may not hold up over time. Soon longstanding skills such as photo manipulation, color combination, and logo generation will instead be accomplished with the click of a button by anyone with internet access. Because of this, educators, students, and professionals must ask what should be done to maintain or increase their value regardless of what the future holds? Furthermore, what skills and characteristics can be identified as being most valuable, timeless, and effective for the success of a designer, not just upon entering the field, but throughout their entire …
Assessing The Spatial Variability Of Soils In Uganda, Joshua Okach Minai
Assessing The Spatial Variability Of Soils In Uganda, Joshua Okach Minai
Open Access Theses
Uganda's soils were once considered the most fertile in Africa, but soil erosion and soil nutrient mining have led to soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity. Lack of environmental awareness among farmers, traditional agricultural practices, minimal inorganic fertilizer use, and little to no use of improved crop varieties all contribute to continued soil degradation. The objectives of this study were: (1) to characterize the spatial distribution of selected physical and chemical soil properties in Uganda on a national scale utilizing the data collected by Nkonya et al. (2008), and (2) to identify the major factors and processes that are dominant …

Extended Scaffolding: A More General Theory Of Scaffolded Cognition, Zachary R. Murphy
Open Access Theses
New and emerging technologies called neuroprostheses are challenging our ideas about where one's mind ends and the environment begins. Cochlear implants, which completely replace the functioning of the inner ear, are now a common treatment for deafness. Berger et al. developed a device that replaces long-term memory in rats (2012), while Hampson et al. created a brain-machine interface that converts a desire to move one's arm into the motor neuron impulses required to achieve that movement (2013)--both offering promising treatments for dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and paralysis. Deep brain stimulation is now a common way of regulating neural activity to manage …
Effects Of Online Repetition Practice On Promoting Mora Awareness: Focusing On Vowel Length, Natsumi Suzuki
Effects Of Online Repetition Practice On Promoting Mora Awareness: Focusing On Vowel Length, Natsumi Suzuki
Open Access Theses
Japanese learners often have a difficult time in acquiring both accurate perception and production of Japanese special moras. Since errors on Japanese special moras can change the meaning of words, it is important to promote mora awareness in an early stage of the learners' language learning process. However, pronunciation practice including that on special moras is often dismissed in the classroom due to time constraints and other reasons. That is why an online system, available outside the class time, could be beneficial in promoting students' awareness of special moras. This study investigates the effectiveness of online listen-and-repeat practice to promote …
Investigation Of Industry Perceptions Of Building Information Modeling (Bim)-Based Estimating Practices In The U.S. And China, Zhihang Yi
Open Access Theses
While the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has been seen as next revolutionary technology for the Architectural, Engineering, Construction and Facility Management (AEC/FM) fields, the AEC/FM industry does not implement BIM technology on the cost estimating practices as widely as expected. The efficiency improvement on cost estimating with BIM could be accomplished through automating quantity take-offs, closely collaborating design with the estimating professionals and so on. This research explores the advantages and barriers of imbedding BIM technology into the estimating practices which enables the industry deepen their understandings on BIM-based cost estimation method. This study also compares the industry perceptions …
Motivation Of Chinese Heritage Language Learners: From A Bioecological Perspective, Nan Zhang
Motivation Of Chinese Heritage Language Learners: From A Bioecological Perspective, Nan Zhang
Open Access Theses
The purpose of this study is to propose a new theoretical framework for researching variables of motivation for language learning. It will contribute to the discussion on the motivation of Chinese heritage learners by using a new model: the bioecological model. The elements of the bioecological model are process, person, context and time. The bioecological model draws on three schools of motivation for language learning: the psychological process, contextual factors, and dynamic interactions. This study will answer two questions: Are personal attributes, proximal interactions and contextual factors predictors of heritage language learners’ motivation? Among these factors, do proximal interactions mediate …
Cultural Readings Of Ojibwe Novelists, Jordan A. Horvath
Cultural Readings Of Ojibwe Novelists, Jordan A. Horvath
Open Access Theses
This thesis examines the work of three Ojibwe novelists through the cultural lens of primarily Ojibwe literary and cultural critics. Novels by Louise Erdrich, Gerald Vizenor, and David Treuer are analyzed with the intent of highlighting aspects of the work in which a heightened understanding of Ojibwe cultural and literary practices, both historical and contemporary, may elevate a reader's engagement with the texts. In the analyzing of these texts, precedence is given to the work of Ojibwe critics such as Vizenor and Anton Treuer. This prioritization of Ojibwe literary theory and cultural knowledge will demonstrate that readers, particularly non-Ojibwe readers, …
Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon
Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation meticulously traces and analyzes the behavior and motivations of Sancho Panza throughout El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha and Segunda Parte del Ingenioso Caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha. To date, seemingly all criticism of Sancho has studied him on the basis of aspects of a particular episode or of a selection of episodes. In contrast, the contribution of the current monograph is its sustained and methodical approach to analyzing him and his development by means of scrutinizing every motive that he reveals and every action that he performs. I assert and demonstrate that the co-protagonist, …
Exclusion From Gender Counter-Stereotypic Activities: Proximal And Distal Effects, Megan Kathleen Mccarty
Exclusion From Gender Counter-Stereotypic Activities: Proximal And Distal Effects, Megan Kathleen Mccarty
Open Access Dissertations
The current work explored whether an incidence of exclusion is experienced differently depending on the activity from which one is excluded. Specifically, we investigated whether exclusion from gender stereotypic vs. counter-stereotypic activities affects both how threatening the experience is and beliefs about gender stereotypes. The effects of exclusion activity on need threat and beliefs about gender stereotypes were explored in a series of four studies using multiple methods: participants relived exclusion or inclusion instances from their real lives (Study 1), imagined exclusion or inclusion scenarios (Study 2), were excluded from a virtual ball toss game (Study 3), and were included …
Foucault, Kant, Deleuze, And The Problem Of Political Agency, Christopher S. Penfield
Foucault, Kant, Deleuze, And The Problem Of Political Agency, Christopher S. Penfield
Open Access Dissertations
Political agency concerns the transformation of the conditions of social organization through collective action. In order to treat the set of necessary conditions for such agency, I develop a detailed reconstruction of Michel Foucault's political philosophy, placed in relation to the work of Immanuel Kant and Gilles Deleuze. I argue that the key to Foucault's political thought is contained in two crucial but neglected concepts, verticality andtransversality, and that the systematic exposition of these concepts yields an account of what must obtain for political agency to be possible, realizable, and sustainable.
How Do Moroccan Teachers Conceptualize Citizenship?, Tarik Saadi
How Do Moroccan Teachers Conceptualize Citizenship?, Tarik Saadi
Open Access Dissertations
Citizenship education plays a critical role in the development of civic attitudes and contributes to the appropriate delivery of a government's policy. However, there is a discrepancy in the literature in defining the meaning and understanding of citizenship concepts. This study is primarily qualitative in nature, using the method of phenomengraphy to investigate teachers' perceptions of citizenship in Morocco. The study recruited six elementary and secondary teachers from Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco to identify their understanding of citizenship. I adapted the three-phase interview approach proposed by Irving Seidman (1998) to frame the interviews with the teachers. The findings demonstrated …

Canvas Politics: Norman Lewis And The Art Of Abstract Resistance, Mindy H.M Tan
Open Access Dissertations
Norman Lewis (1909-1979) is best remembered, perhaps erroneously, as the first African American Abstract Expressionist. In this dissertation, I argue that he is better suited as a Social Abstractionist and an Abstract Allusionist based on the life he lived, the work he produced, and his involvement in both black art and the Abstract Expressionist movement. ^ I begin by presenting a comprehensive overview of Lewis' biography and oeuvre. Painting from the 1930s to the late 1970s, his aesthetic sensibilities can be categorized into three distinct phases: 1) in the 1930s, answering to the call for a new presentation of the …
Chinese Eco-Films And Their Pastoral Myth, Runlei Zhai
Chinese Eco-Films And Their Pastoral Myth, Runlei Zhai
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is a cross-cultural study of Chinese ecocinema after 1978. It begins by introducing the Hollywood practice in simplifying the conflicts between garden and machine, anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, and Tityrus and Meliboeus in American pastoralism, then explains why such simplification does not work on Chinese screen, and finally studies how Chinese filmmakers reconstruct their pastoral myth in three major steps: first, to recognize Chinese social and cultural realities; second, to establish the human-nature connection, and third, to affirm the nature-culture unity. The conclusion is that Chinese eco-cinema exists in a hybrid form. While Hollywood influences Chinese eco-cinema in terms …
Becoming Kin: Modernity, Authenticity, And The Construction Of Spiritual Relatedness In An Evangelical Parachurch Ministry, Brad Codr
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores how families are formed and spiritual kinship is created by members of the Body of Christ evangelical parachurch ministry at one public university in the United States. Spiritual relatedness is used to conceptualize members' social relationships and demonstrate the diverse forms of Christian community that emerge in the lives of young adults. Results from this study provide an alternative perspective to social science literature labeling Christianity as an individualistic belief system. It also contributes to continuing dialogue within the anthropology of Christianity, which seeks to describe and understand what it means to be Christian. I argue that …
Private, Professional, Public: An Investigation Of Teacher Identity Development, James Richard Gilligan
Private, Professional, Public: An Investigation Of Teacher Identity Development, James Richard Gilligan
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation utilizes qualitative research methodology within a queer theoretical framework to investigate the process by which five in-service teachers integrate their private and professional identities to create public identities. Data collection methods included individual interviews, field observations, and artifact analysis. Data analysis focused on the school gender regimes that prescribe the teachers' professional lives; the impact of those gender regimes on the teachers' private identity development, professional identity development, curriculum, pedagogy, and professional relationships; and the identity management strategies each participant utilized in order to integrate his/her respective identities. In addition, data analysis revealed the relative extent to which …

Negotiated Interaction In The Learning Of Written Discourse Conventions, Brian A Guthrie
Open Access Dissertations
This study examines how two Japanese students learning to write in English negotiate the variations in written discourse conventions they encounter in an all-English program at a university in Japan. Textbooks, samples of the students' essays, and written feedback from instructors were analyzed, and interviews were conducted with the students in order to demonstrate the varieties of descriptions and interpretations of written academic introductions the students encountered in their first year of study at the university. Using an approach to learning that draws from ecological theories of composition, alternative approaches to second language acquisition, and actor-network theory, the students' academic …

It's All Uphill From Here: Finding The Concept Of Joy In Existential Philosophy And Literature, Richard F. Hamm Iii
Open Access Dissertations
Current readings of existentialism are overly negative. It is not without reason that existentialism has a reputation of pessimism preceding it, to the point that the uninitiated cannot help but picture beatnik poets chain-smoking by the first syllable of the name "Sartre." Existentialism, while a movement over one hundred and fifty years old, is often characterized in the light of the media popularity it was given in the decade following the Second World War--although much of the spirit of what is supposedly existentialism came more as a response to the First. The Great War brought with it devastation across Europe …

The autistic child: developmental diversity in the early childcare classroom
Olivia Harrison
Autism is a growing factor in society. Today 1 child in 68 is born with an autism spectrum disorder, a 119% increase from the year 2000. Autistic children develop atypically and often non-autistic children are alarmed by the diverse and occasionally erratic behaviors of their peers simply because they are unfamiliar with developmental differences.
While there are many lovely children’s books written FOR autistic children, there is less of a market for addressing the concept of autism in the classroom as a whole. In order to facilitate an …

On Finding Jesus ... And Divorcing Mary Magdalene, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The last of the six CNN episodes on Finding Jesus: Faith. Fact. Forgery deals with Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus. Like the other episodes and the book by David Gibson and Michael McKinley on which the series is based, glimpses of Jesus are garnered through the lenses of artifacts, including archaeological and manuscript discoveries ranging from over a millennium ago to recent decades. The final episode focuses on Mary Magdalene. According to the Gospels, she was a faithful follower of Jesus, but might she have been more than that -- perhaps even a lover, or Jesus' wife? Inquiring …
Defying The United States: General Douglas Macarthur, Luke G. Mueller
Defying The United States: General Douglas Macarthur, Luke G. Mueller
Honors Projects, History
General Douglas MacArthur continually disobeyed his superiors officers throughout his entire career, yet he never received any punishment. He eventually became one of the most decorated U.S. soldiers and rose to the rank of General by the time his career was over. However, as his career progressed, his defiance increased. It was not until President Harry S. Truman relieved him of command during the Korean War that MacArthur received any kind of reprimand. Because of this, MacArthur threatened not only U.S. security and democracy, but also world peace.
Illinois (Honors), Luke J. Mcloughlin

Compositions
This work was abstractly inspired by the landscape of my home state. I composed its building blocks while just north of Normal, Illinois, specifically while at various points along the square formed by Main Street, E 1800 North Road, N 1300 East Road, and W Ziebarth Road. During multiple sessions, I visited these locations and wrote down, on staff and loose leaf paper, what came to mind. The goal was that, during the composition process, I would focus more on the development of the music—in and of itself. The resultant piece was to avoid relying on some sort of outside …

Creative Expressive Writing And Perceived Self-Efficacy In The Writing Center—A Tutor’S Narrative, Allison King
Creative Expressive Writing And Perceived Self-Efficacy In The Writing Center—A Tutor’S Narrative, Allison King
McNair Scholars Research Journal
You know the story…the one about a curious little girl, captivated by a little white rabbit? Like young Alice, my curiosity compelled me to follow my own white rabbit down an unknown path, at least to me. It found me when I attained an internship in our university writing center the fall of 2012. And down the rabbit-hole, I fell. My adventures in writing center wonderland grew into an infatuation with writing—the tutoring of, the process of, the pedagogies of, the praxis of. Many discourses of writing pull at me, begging to be consumed and adapted to suit the situation. …

The story The Metamorphosis is about Gregor, a young salesman, who turns into a giant insect. Over the course of The Metamorphosis, Gregor slowly begins to hate his change more and more. During his change, he slowly separates from his family to the point where they are relieved when he dies. This story is important because the protagonists has clear ordeals with change and how it affects him. From the story, I learned that most change is often resented, and when change is pushed, it usually ends negatively.

Anthony Trollope, originally from London uses his daily setting of cliffs and seaside coves in his short story "Malachi's Cove". If we do not heed the warnings in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel the Handmaid’s Tale, we, similar to handmaids will lose ourselves to society’s conveyor belt: go to school, graduate, attend college, graduate once more, raise a family, and then work away the rest of our lives. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale acts as an in depth metaphoric replication of modern society. The society in which Offred resides in, through historical events, reasoning, and the decrease in birth rates, the government's action is justified as the people's moral values are suppressed and their rights taken away from them. Likewise, in …

Become A Herlander: Eliminate Gender Roles, Lizeth Fraire
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
In her novel, Herland, Gilman illustrates a flourishing civilization whose only occupants are women. "Gilman envisions this emancipated 'new woman' as ‘honester, braver, stronger, more healthier and skillful and able and free, more human in all ways’" (Lathrop 8). By comparing Herland to the women in the Victorian Age and even modern society, it’s obvious that they thrive because they do not have a notion of what they are supposed to be because of their gender.

Why Censor An Artist's Creativity?, Darrin Smith
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Art is more than pain-ngs and figures, it’s a form of communica-on and a way to express one’s self. The censorship of ar-s-c crea-vity is the oppression of a group of people. In visual art, performance art, literature, comedy and in media are only a few examples where ar-sts have had their voice censored.
