Philanthropy And The New England Emigrant Aid Company, 1854–1900, Courtney Elizabeth Buchkoski
Philanthropy And The New England Emigrant Aid Company, 1854–1900, Courtney Elizabeth Buchkoski
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This project examines the New England Emigrant Aid Company colonization of Kansas in 1854 as a solution to the growing debate over popular sovereignty and slave labor. It uses the Company as a lens to reinterpret the intellectual history of philanthropy, tracing its roots from Puritan ideas of charity to the capitalistic giving of the nineteenth century.
It argues that the Company’s vision was simultaneously capitalistic and moralistic, for it served both as an imposition of “proper” society upon the West and South, but also had the potential to benefit the donors financially and politically. Using a settler colonial framework, …

Business As Missions: Applying Business As Missions To The Hospitality Industry, Leah J. Reist
Business As Missions: Applying Business As Missions To The Hospitality Industry, Leah J. Reist
Senior Honors Theses
Business is a vehicle highly useful for achieving specific missions for the kingdom of God that could not otherwise be accomplished. A Business as Missions (BAM) organization is one structure of business that focuses intently on accomplishing the mission of reaching others for the kingdom of God. BAMs can be utilized in virtually any industry; however, the following thesis focuses on the unique opportunities that exist within the hospitality industry. These unique opportunities are present because of its relational components and consumer demands for community and social interaction. A hostel is one specific form of a hospitality company that has …
The Predestination Debate: A Harmony Of Corporate Election And Individual Election, Bradley Smith
The Predestination Debate: A Harmony Of Corporate Election And Individual Election, Bradley Smith
Senior Honors Theses
The topic of predestination has been discussed throughout church history in the work of men like Augustine, Pelagius, Calvin, Arminius, and Barth. Corporate election seeks to reconcile some problematic areas of Calvinistic and Arminian theology by arguing that in the same way that God chose the nation of Israel through His election of Abraham, so He also chose the Church through His election of Jesus Christ. Despite this view’s seemingly convincing evidence, Scripture points far beyond its main tenets. God’s unconditional election of individuals ought to be foundational to the understanding of corporate election. This study will discuss and interact …
Two's Company But Three's A Crowd: A Study On The Crowd In The Book Of Acts, Dylan Eagle
Two's Company But Three's A Crowd: A Study On The Crowd In The Book Of Acts, Dylan Eagle
Senior Honors Theses
The book of Acts is an entity of its own. While it is a part of the canonical Bible as one of the sixty-six books, it is unique in that it presents the continuation of God’s plan from Jesus Christ to the growth of the early Christian church. More than that, in the book of Acts God further develops his plan of restoration to include not only the Jews but also the Gentiles. With Acts being a unique work of literature, each component of the work uniquely moves the story along. One component is that of the crowd, specifically the …
Luther And The Jews: An Exposition Directed To Christians On Martin Luther's Anti-Semitism, Defense, And Legacy, Megan Wilson
Luther And The Jews: An Exposition Directed To Christians On Martin Luther's Anti-Semitism, Defense, And Legacy, Megan Wilson
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis is an analysis of the historical relations between reformer Martin Luther and the Jewish people. Its primary purpose is to defend Luther’s image as a prominent figure in Christian history while considering the possibility of his anti-Semitic views. This thesis focuses particularly on a number of Luther’s written works in order to achieve this goal, with a secondary concentration on historical and incidental defenses that can be used to exonerate him. This thesis also serves to inform contemporary Christians of the controversy surrounding these views and the result of his legacy in more recent centuries.

My Generation‘. Der Zusammenhang Zwischen Der Popmusik Und Den Linken Bewegungen Der 60er Und 70er Jahre, David Ross
My Generation‘. Der Zusammenhang Zwischen Der Popmusik Und Den Linken Bewegungen Der 60er Und 70er Jahre, David Ross
Darlings In Love: A History Of Romance Between Women At Hollins In The Early 20th Century, Antonia Nagle
Darlings In Love: A History Of Romance Between Women At Hollins In The Early 20th Century, Antonia Nagle
Hollins Student Conference (2012-2016)
This paper and accompanying sources hope to provide a detailed examination of the world of darlings at Hollins between the years 1900 and 1921, using primary sources gathered from The Spinster, the college’s yearbook. As a small, single-sex institution established in 1842, Hollins has a history of romantic relationships between students. Students who participated in these relationships between the years of 1900 and 1921 were called “darlings.” These same-sex relationships flourished at Hollins in the early 20th century and were a well-known and accepted part of life at Hollins. For this study, over a hundred primary sources were gathered …
The Old Testament 30 Years Later: Consistency And Change, Alice Laffey
The Old Testament 30 Years Later: Consistency And Change, Alice Laffey
HCAA Continuing Education Day
The answer depends on the question. The question depends on underlying assumptions. The first part of the “class” will describe the methods used to interpret the Old Testament in the early part of the Christian era, in response to the Enlightenment and, for Catholics, Vatican II and, more recently in the developed world, as a consequence of post-modern culture. This first part of the “class” will serve as an Introduction to the second part in which pre-modern, modern, and post-modern assumptions, methods and approaches will be applied to the book of Ruth. “Students” are encouraged to read the book of …
Der Fall Der Berliner Mauer Und Die Wiedervereinigung Eines Gebrochenes Lands, Hannah Kramer
Der Fall Der Berliner Mauer Und Die Wiedervereinigung Eines Gebrochenes Lands, Hannah Kramer
Deutschland. Übersetzungen Aus Dem Arabischen Und Orientalismus, Rostom Mbarek
Deutschland. Übersetzungen Aus Dem Arabischen Und Orientalismus, Rostom Mbarek
Strategische Spracherfahrung: Die Verbindung Zwischen Erfahrung Von Sprachlernenden Und Erfolgreichen Sprachlernstrategien, Hannes Zetzsche
Strategische Spracherfahrung: Die Verbindung Zwischen Erfahrung Von Sprachlernenden Und Erfolgreichen Sprachlernstrategien, Hannes Zetzsche
Jeder Mensch Ist Ein Sterbender Mensch. Der Tod Und Seine Offenbarung In Walter Benjamins ‚Erzähler, Emma Goehler
Jeder Mensch Ist Ein Sterbender Mensch. Der Tod Und Seine Offenbarung In Walter Benjamins ‚Erzähler, Emma Goehler
