Savage Messiah: Ken Russell's Forgotten Masterpiece, John A. Duvall
Savage Messiah: Ken Russell's Forgotten Masterpiece, John A. Duvall
Collected Faculty Scholarship
This paper presents an analysis of Savage Messiah, Ken Russell’s filmic biography of WWI-era artist and sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, evaluating its various aesthetic codes of meaning, and demonstrating how these codes contribute to a unified narrative structure. Particular attention is paid to the phenomenological elements of the cinematic narrative – image composition, art direction, color, motion, editing and sound – in order to reveal the sensuous core of the film as its method of thematic expression. We offer observations on the narrative’s deep structure in terms of symbolic references, on Russell’s visual techniques of characterization, and on how these elements …

This bench in one of a pair made as result of a graduate class to design museum seating for the ancient Greek and Roman galleries in the RISD Museum. Each bench features a front seat made of bent, patinated steel that curves downward and back upward to form the back "leg." The two front legs are made of resawn ash, as is the majority of the seat. The benches were installed in the RISD Museum in October 2011. 2011
Russian Sign Language Glossary Of Lds Terms, Nathan Boyce, Dr. Christopher Wakeland
Russian Sign Language Glossary Of Lds Terms, Nathan Boyce, Dr. Christopher Wakeland
Journal of Undergraduate Research
There are over ten missions in the Church among Russian speakers. The largest group is in Kiev, where the first deaf branch in the former Soviet Union was formed. There are around sixty deaf members there. Since many words used commonly in the Church are not used commonly outside of it, deaf people have had to make up their own signs for these new words. Many words have no signs and are spelled. Several similarly written, but different-meaning words are given the same sign. This results from members in isolated cities not thinking up the same signs.

Various LDS scholars have taken pains to point out the paucity of LDS scholarship on the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) of the Bible. Priceless as it is, the JST’s literary contribution to the Old Testament remains largely unexplored. Even LDS readers are uninformed with regards to significant literary contributions made by the Prophet Joseph’s inspired corrections. My ORCA project is an effort to defray this problem by investigating a Pentateuchal poetic pattern in which JST passages from the book of Moses play a significant role. I consider the results of my research a partial answer to Robert Matthews’ prediction:
A Virtual Passover, Daron L. Janis, Dr. Victor Ludlow
A Virtual Passover, Daron L. Janis, Dr. Victor Ludlow
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Passover is the central liturgical festival of Judaism, celebrating the Israelite deliverance from Egyptian slavery. It reminds Jews of the birth of their nation and God’s solemn covenant with their ancestors. In fact, Passover has traversed religious boundaries, carrying its significance into both mainstream Christian and Latter-day Saint ideology. However, Passover has always been and will always be a primarily Jewish celebration. It describes the Jewish experience, not only several thousand years ago, but in every generation to the present day and beyond. Indeed, a profound understanding of the social, political, historical, spiritual, and experiential significance of Passover will lead …
The Committee Of Seven And It’S Members, Mark R. Ashurst-Mcgee
The Committee Of Seven And It’S Members, Mark R. Ashurst-Mcgee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the Council of Fifty’s earliest years and in its last years, it appears that within the Council of Fifty there was an executive body of seven men. In historical literature, the only references to the Utah group of seven are D. Michael Quinn’s two citations of Council of Fifty member (and Apostle) Franklin D. Richards’ journal. On 23 June 1882, Richards recorded the following in his journal: 2 Sessions in Council of the Kingdom Committees were appointed to see after Election affairs in Idaho Territory in Nevada State-and seven John Sharp, W[illia]m Jennings, W[illiam Henry] Hooper R[obert] T[aylor] Burton, …

The Brethren Speak – About The Women: 1850-1870, Katie Farnsworth Bitner, Jill Mulvay Derr
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During fall semester 2000 I had the opportunity to study some of the ideas taught about Eve and the role of women among Protestant Americans in the 19th century. While doing this work I became curious about what the brethren of the LDS Church were saying to and about the women during that time. I also wanted to know how the statements they made changed over time, that is whether they followed cultural trends or not. I did my search in the Journal of Discourses, which is a compilation of many conference talks and other speeches by the brethren from …
The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Mozambique, Partick C. J. Tedjamulia, Dr. E. Dale Lebaron
The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Mozambique, Partick C. J. Tedjamulia, Dr. E. Dale Lebaron
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The people of Mozambique did not wait for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to determine the appropriate time to enter their country, the early Mozambican pioneers paved the way and called in the troops. When the first full-time missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints entered Maputo, Mozambique they found an official branch already organized with a full presidency, relief society, and auxiliary leaders. As the missionaries entered the Maputo Branch sacrament meeting for the first time, the members had been fasting for their arrival.
Restoration Of Good Fortune: One Through Three Hundred And Fifty, John C. Ohran, Joseph Ostraff
Restoration Of Good Fortune: One Through Three Hundred And Fifty, John C. Ohran, Joseph Ostraff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Restoration of Good Fortune is an idea that originated from a discussion regarding the artist Edward Kienholz and his exhibit of Watercolors.
In 1969 Edward Kienholz’s exhibit Watercolors, was shown at the Eugenia Butler Gallery, in Los Angeles. For the exhibit, Kienholz “. . . contrived a system of currency, as he termed it, whereby the work was sold for the amount hand painted on the framed sheet of paper (which encompassed $1 to $1000 in systematic increments)” (1). In a retrospective of Kienholz’s work, this was written of his Watercolors, “. .
