Textual Fingerprinting: Uncovering Book Of Mormon Material In The Joseph Smith Translation Of The Bible, Donald Patrick Bradley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the first three years of the LDS Church, Joseph Smith spent much of his time revising or retranslating the Bible. He intended to clarify obscure passages, restore lost truths, and weed out errors that had found their way into the sacred text. Although the resulting “Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible” (or JST) is scripture to nine million Latter-day Saints, little is known about how it was produced. Did joseph Smith bring it forth solely by direct revelation? Did he use his own judgment in revising some passages? Were there yet other sources he used besides his own mind …

Provo, Utah During The Roaring Twenties, Chelsea Schofield, Dr. Brian Cannon Feb 2014

Provo, Utah During The Roaring Twenties, Chelsea Schofield, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I began my paper, I searched past General Conference talks to discover instruction given to members of the LDS church by their leaders through the moral decay of the 1920’s. I concluded that the issue of morality and moral decay raised great concern among the brethren of the church. Upholding these laws and living in accordance to these moral principles is stressed today, just as it was in the 1920’s.

Abinadi, An Opera In Two Acts, Meredith Ryan Taylor, Dr. David Sargent Feb 2014

Abinadi, An Opera In Two Acts, Meredith Ryan Taylor, Dr. David Sargent

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Abinadi, at the time of this report, has not been completed. Originally the opera was intended to be finished with an orchestration requiring soloists, chorus and a small instrumental ensemble of not more than twenty players. Early on in the process of writing, Dr. Lawrence Vincent (head of BYU opera) expressed an interest in somehow staging the work, but was unsure that the funds would be available for an orchestra. In consideration of this and the prospect of having the work staged I decided to reduce the amount of instrumentalists to three- two pianists and a woodwind specialist (the cast …

The Conception Of Ren 仁In Daodejing, Poduo Wang Feb 2014

The Conception Of Ren 仁In Daodejing, Poduo Wang

International ResearchScape Journal

The conception of ren 仁 is rarely mentioned in Laozi’s theory, people easily explained Daodejing as an instance of Laozi’s objection to ren. This paper explored the Laozi’s unique conception in Daodejing with different contexts in early Daoist literature. However, Laozi’s understanding of ren is different and wider; it not only relies on morality, but also extends to be natural order. The great ren, which is admired by the Daodejing and Laozi, came from our nature and it should be expressed without motives or intention. It is an absolute universal benevolence among all creatures, and harmony interaction with …

The Effect Of The Sub-Saharan African Gender Divide On The Rights And Status Of Women In A Globalized World, Toni Shoola

International ResearchScape Journal

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to a substantial gender divide that encompasses numerous aspects of life. Though this divide is a historic reality for Sub-Saharan Africa, the recent and current process of globalization has also had both negative and positive impacts on the gender divide. This paper provides a look at the gender divide in Sub-Saharan Africa from a theoretical and historical framework that goes on to explore various facets of life including economics, education, land tenure, legal rights, political participation, and health rights. In addition, one countermovement to the pervasive gender divide, African feminisms, is analyzed.

There Used To Be A Ballpark ••• A Portrait Of Derks Field, Brady Tuckett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In early 1992, it was announced that Salt Lake City’s minor league ballpark, Derks Field, was going to be tom down. Soon after reading these headlines, I became interested in making a documentary about the history of baseball in Salt Lake City. As a child, I attended many baseball games in Derks Field with my grandfather, to whom I have dedicated this documentary.

Tolstoy And Mormonism, Gary L. Browning, Dr. Melvin K. Richardson Feb 2014

Tolstoy And Mormonism, Gary L. Browning, Dr. Melvin K. Richardson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When Leo Tolstoy was a young boy, his older brother told him that the secret of life was written on a green stick, buried under an oak tree in the woods of Yasnaya Polyana, the Tolstoy family estate in the beautiful rolling hills of tsarist Russia. All his life, Tolstoy, the great Russian author and humanist, searched for the green stick and its contents. He sought answers to the perplexing puzzles of life that ultimate truth, contained upon the green stick, would provide. In his works and in his spiritual strivings, Tolstoy always remained committed to this ideal, that ultimate …

Illustrating A Children’S Book, Charles B. Stubbs Feb 2014

Illustrating A Children’S Book, Charles B. Stubbs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The project I proposed last fall was to research the children’s book market and to write and illustrate a book that would teach family values to young children. I proposed to make a copy or partially finished copy of the book including illustrations and to prepare the copy for publication approval. Currently, all my proposed goals have been reached. However, this has not occurred without revision and change along the road of research and discovery.

Summary Of My Involvement In The Production Of The Animated Short, Rupert, Scott Porter, Dr. Brent Adams Feb 2014

Summary Of My Involvement In The Production Of The Animated Short, Rupert, Scott Porter, Dr. Brent Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I have been working with a group of about 20 students on a completely computer animated cartoon named “Rupert”. The cartoon will be approximately 5 minutes long and deals with a young boy who learns about microbes. Whenever he hears new details about microbes, we see what Rupert images that the microbes would look like that perform that particular function. For example, when Rupert hears that microbes can make us sick, he imagines microbes with weapons on the attack while when he hears that microbes are used to make some foods, he imagines a factory where all the workers are …

8 Minutes At 325°, Todd Wahlquist

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The making of a film can be very taxing, both mentally and financially, and I appreciate very much the Office of Research and Creative Work helping to lessen both of those demands. The total budget for my film was approximately $5,000; therefore, the $1,000 provided by the Research and Creative Work Office was a significant factor in my being able to complete the final stages of post-production this past spring.

According to the stipulations required of recipients of the Research and Creative Work scholarships, a two page report is to be turned in to your office by August 31, 1994. Peter French, His 1813 Inn, And The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Josh E. Probert, Dr. Larry C. Porter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I spent 10 days in Northeastern Ohio and Western New York this summer researching Peter French and his property which was purchased by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833. While in Ohio I visited several historical repositories including the Western Reserve Historical Society, Lake County Historical Society, and the Morley Public Library in Painesville. Altogether, the research project was successful. The information obtained will be extremely valuable to the LDS Church Historical Department whom I will report to in an oral presentation on September 15, 1998.

The New Language Policy In South Africa: A Sociolinguistic Analysis And Implication For The Bantu Languages, Richard Cameron Blake Feb 2014

The New Language Policy In South Africa: A Sociolinguistic Analysis And Implication For The Bantu Languages, Richard Cameron Blake

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In April, 1994, the first all-race presidential and parliamentary elections were held In South Africa after several years of multi-party constitutional negotiations. J’ielson Mandela, a political-prisoner-turned-president, was given the charge to uphold the new constitution, one In which all South Africans are regarded equally, regardless of race. Part of that constitution is a new language policy designed to reflect the wide diversity of languages In the country. Under the new language policy, 11 languages (nine of them spoken by different African tribal groups) are now recognized as official languages instead of only English and Afrikaans (a Dutch-based language spoken by …
