On Creating Demand, Molding Paradigms, And Satisfying The Soul, Gregory Wells, Adrian Pulfer Feb 2014

On Creating Demand, Molding Paradigms, And Satisfying The Soul, Gregory Wells, Adrian Pulfer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Introduction Graphic Design is a practical art. It is a vehicle for communication. Or, more precisely, it is the creation of the vehicle of ultimate impact for a specific purpose. Unfortunately, this fact tends to relegate design to a relatively late stage in the development process. Designers are commonly consulted only after executives have conceptualized the product, identified the target market segment, and made feasibility decisions. My goal for this project was to make graphics an integral part of the research and development process from the beginning; to make informed business decisions regarding the launch of a new concept restaurant …

Where We Seek The Light, Tami Foulger, Peggy Honey Feb 2014

Where We Seek The Light, Tami Foulger, Peggy Honey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As proposed, the research portion of my project included both the investigations into the physical benefits of light as well as the spiritual needs of light. We also refer to this light as “His” light or the light of Christ. The creative portion of the project was carried out with a set of watercolors.

(Con)Text, Christopher Lynn, Gary Barton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Within the field of semiotics, methods of communication (languages) are separated into three distinct categories: signifier, signified, and sign. The signifier is a thing, like a ball. The signified is a definition or concept of the thing: a ball is a spherical object. When the signifier and signified are combined, the result is the sign. The French semiotician Roland Barthes in his essay, “Myth Today,” stated that “the signifier is empty, the sign is full, it is a meaning.” He goes on to equate the “sign” with the “word,” or in other words, the symbol which acts as proxy for …

Gethsemane Series, Sarah Ludlow, Robert Barrett Feb 2014

Gethsemane Series, Sarah Ludlow, Robert Barrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

From my Fall 1998 submission of an ORCA proposal, I have since been extremely involved in the completion of my proposed project. As an Illustration major seeking a religious emphasis, I feel that the worth of a picture is to develop and motivate the mind to a better understanding of the truths of this eternal world. I proposed to paint a series of five large narrative paintings depicting the last three hours of Christ’s life in the Garden of Gethsemane. Because of the sacred nature of this project I felt like it was very important to increase my own knowledge …

Cultural Paintings, Wendy Balderson Keller, Robert T. Barrett Feb 2014

Cultural Paintings, Wendy Balderson Keller, Robert T. Barrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Illustration has the ability to create awareness of different cultures in a way that can educate and inspire. As the church continues to expand globally, the leaders of the church have recognized the need for increased understanding and appreciation of the rich ethnic diversity which exists. President Hinckley stated, “We must resolve to live together in a society of men and women of diverse backgrounds, interests, and cultures. We must live with respect and tolerance and understanding one for another. We can and should retain our individuality, and respect that of others, while nurturing together a great society dedicated to …

Indian Illnesses Due To Mercury Poisoning At The Colonial Spanish Mining Community At Huancavelica, Peru In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, James D. Harrop, Dr. Kendall Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Spanish mining operations in the Americas during Colonial times were operated by the only supply of manpower available to the Spanish; the indigenous peoples. Huancavelica was a mercury mine essential to the continued production of the silver mines. Mercury was necessary to extract silver from ore and was rarely found in such high deposits as at Huancavelica.

Summary Of Creative Research – Furniture Design, Virgil Loggins Merrill, David Taylor Feb 2014

Summary Of Creative Research – Furniture Design, Virgil Loggins Merrill, David Taylor

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The objective of this research project was to design and create two original pieces of furniture. The conclusion was much more. There were initially two developments to this project, the first being the design process, and the second being the manufacturing process. Through the design process I was able to deal mainly with the aesthetics of the two pieces of furniture. As I tread through the stairway of my imagination, I produced drawing after drawing until I had decided upon the two pieces of furniture. The one being a table, and the other, being a chair. The design process is …

Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results Of The Life Of Luke S. Johnson, James A. Rae, Dr. Richard E. Bennett Feb 2014

Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results Of The Life Of Luke S. Johnson, James A. Rae, Dr. Richard E. Bennett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The results of being accepted for this scholarship resulted in an extensive life history of one of the most prominent Latter-Day Saint pioneers. Though now largely not well known, Luke S. and the Johnson family played an important role in the beginnings of a new faith. Little information about the life of Luke S. Johnson has been made readily available to members of the L.D.S. church and the public. During the previous six months research has been documented and compiled into a 27 page history highlighting, what most would consider to be, the most interesting and important events of this …

Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results, Kathleen Price, Dr. Jeff Turley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project entitled “Out of Obscurity” required the transcription of twenty letters dictated by King Philip II of Spain in 1592 during Spain’s naval wars against England and France. Most of the documents generated by Philip II, also known as the “paper king” for his prolific output of official documents, are carefully housed in the Archive of Simancas near Valladolid, Spain, making them difficult for U.S. students to access and study. However, through a generous donation made to the Department of Collections and Manuscripts in Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University, professors and students alike have the opportunity …

Compilation Of Scandinavian Studies Index, Volume 37 – Volume 71, Joshua D. Jewkes, Dr. Gary R. Hooper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the generosity on the part of the Office of Research and Creative Design and the grant offered me, I was able to produce a significant piece of scholarly work that will contribute significantly to a major academic field: a subject-word index for the academic journal, Scandinavian Studies. The actual work for the project was completed between January and August 1999. Through my experiences, I was able to broaden my knowledge of a field of study which I consider very interesting in addition to gaining valuable skills relating to editing, formatting, and indexing in journalism.

Assessing Of The Need For An English Grammar Resource For Non-Native Speakers, Steven M. Sandberg, Dr. Penny Bird Feb 2014

Assessing Of The Need For An English Grammar Resource For Non-Native Speakers, Steven M. Sandberg, Dr. Penny Bird

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this study was to assess the need for an established service at Brigham Young University (BYU) to assist non-native speakers of English with revisions of their papers. The study relied on the assumption that effective, writing-process learning only occurs at the point of need—the draft stages—and not after a final grade has been given. The excellent grammar resources of other language departments and the non-credit English Language Center (ELC), and the frequently overcrowded grammar resources at the Reading/Writing Center (R/WC), prompted the idea of creating an English Grammar Lab at the R/WC.

Using Instructional Design Theory To Create A Student Editing Handbook, Andrea M. Reese, Dr. Beverly B. Zimmerman Feb 2014

Using Instructional Design Theory To Create A Student Editing Handbook, Andrea M. Reese, Dr. Beverly B. Zimmerman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The curriculum for the Insight student journal workshop class consisted of an eclectic mix of handouts distributed at the editor’s whim. Some were created by previous editors, some photocopied without attribution to the teachers who wrote them, and others adapted from undocumented print sources. Not only did this raise ethical problems, but the number and variety of handouts made overlap of content inevitable. I realized the head editors could use class time more effectively if lessons were distinct and parallel.

Preserving A Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study Of Weaving And Women, Ellen O'Neil, Dr. Martha Peacock Feb 2014

Preserving A Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study Of Weaving And Women, Ellen O'Neil, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The original concept for my research was to compare weaving between cultures and the roles of women in the creation of woven art. I approached the subject with much excitement, as woven art has been a part of my life since birth. In having the opportunity to go to France, my study of weaving consisted of tapestries and the history of textiles. Upon returning home, I was able to spend six glorious weeks with my grandmother learning how to weave.

Making Windows Into Men’S Souls: An Examination Of Theological Norms At Elizabethan Cambridge, John R. Parker Feb 2014

Making Windows Into Men’S Souls: An Examination Of Theological Norms At Elizabethan Cambridge, John R. Parker

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The nature of English religiosity that is both specific ideology and doctrine and how these were practiced in the adherent's day to day life, during the later part of the Tudor dynasty has been the subject of much debate and research. Due to the volume of work produced about this period it is necessary to differentiate between three categories: those works which are directly relevant to this examination, as they deal specifically with either the time or content of this essay, those which are useful to understanding the period directly preceding this examinations focus, and those which address subjects and …

Jora: Complete Volume 1, Issue 1

Journal of Retracing Africa

We are pleased to announce the inaugural issue of Journal of Retracing Africa (JORA). For centuries, Africa’s socioeconomic and political development has been dictated by a dynamic and complex coalescence of external and domestic forces. Narratives on Africa abound. Many, unfortunately, hold myths, misconceptions, and misrepresentations of issues and events surrounding the continent. The launching of JORA is an attempt to offer a thoughtful and balanced reconstruction of African societies, histories, and cultures. By providing a platform for scholars to provide their unique perspectives on all aspects of the African experience, JORA makes a valuable contribution towards producing an account …

The Forgotten Victims: Ethnic Minorities In The Nigeria-Biafra War, 1967-1970, Arua Oko Omaka

Journal of Retracing Africa

The Nigeria-Biafra War attracted enormous international attention not just for the brutal events of the period, but also because of how the conflict was interpreted, especially by foreigners. The ghastly images of victims of the war dominated the international media and roused the world’s conscience. The confl ict took a toll on human lives on both the Igbo and the ethnic minorities in Biafra. While the Igbo tragedy was largely perpetrated in Northern Nigeria, that of the Biafran minorities – Efi k, Ijaw, Ogoja, Ibibio – occurred mainly in their homelands. The gory experiences suff ered by the Biafran minorities …
