Introduction Fed Up: Creating A New Type Of Senegal Through The Arts, Molly Krueger Enz, Devin Bryson
Introduction Fed Up: Creating A New Type Of Senegal Through The Arts, Molly Krueger Enz, Devin Bryson
School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies
Present-day Senegal is home to a vibrant cultural milieu that, in many respects, is reflective of that which its first president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, and the Senegalese cultural eminences grises endeavored to promote during the early postcolonial period. As Elizabeth Harney has noted, Senghor “regarded art as a medium of change—a tool that could be used to advance his cultural, political, and economic development plans. Consequently, he envisioned the artist as a representative of and advocate for a new nation.” Today, there exists a burgeoning scene of young authors, artists, actors, and musicians who are continuing in this Senghorian cultural …

Sustainable Faith: How The Neuroscience Of Emotion Promotes Spiritual Transformation, Christine M. Mutch
Sustainable Faith: How The Neuroscience Of Emotion Promotes Spiritual Transformation, Christine M. Mutch
Doctor of Ministry
Current research indicates that well-intentioned practices and programs aimed at forming people into the image of Christ are not producing the intended results. One roadblock is the misunderstanding and lack of value placed on the role of emotion in the transformation process. The purpose of this dissertation is to present neuroscience research about the integral role of emotion in one's life, and suggest practical ways to capitalize on emotion to effect transformation.
Chapter one describes the goals of spiritual formation, in contrast to current attitudes and practices of those inside and outside the church. It provides a basic introduction to …
Trinitarian Theorizing And Mystery As A Way Forward: A Critical Examination Of The Forms Of Trinitarian Hypothesizing, Why They Fail, And Why Mystery Is A Way Forward, Matthew J. Conniry
Trinitarian Theorizing And Mystery As A Way Forward: A Critical Examination Of The Forms Of Trinitarian Hypothesizing, Why They Fail, And Why Mystery Is A Way Forward, Matthew J. Conniry
Seminary Masters Theses
Scholarship reveals that there are at least two primary ways of handling the issue incumbent within Trinitarian theorizing. Most theologians resolve the issue by addressing the inconsistencies, finding various ways to make important distinctions to eliminate apparent contradictions. This is no doubt the most popular route. Among these are social Trinitarians and Latin Trinitarians. A rough distinction can be made here, wherein social Trinitarians start with the Threeness of God and reason from that stance that God is one by an inexorable and eternal loving relationship. Oppositely, Latin Trinitarians start with God as one and reason how God can possibly …

Altered Recurrence In To The Lighthouse, Heather Lamb
Altered Recurrence In To The Lighthouse, Heather Lamb
2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents
Virginia Woolf, in her novel To the Lighthouse, portrays memory progressing in a spiral motion. In this motion, a single memory, event, or moment in time, is captured and relived. These memories are initiated by present events similar to past experiences. Therefore, memories are a series of reoccurring events on a personal timeline that are altered slightly with each reconstruction, an experience that I will refer to as altered recurrence. Through altered recurrence, Woolf depicts art as a result of the creator’s memory; yet, this pattern of memory also deems the work obsolete.
Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents
In this research, I evaluated the historical representation of Native Americans in children’s literature. The portrayal of Native Americans in children’s literature is important because Native Americans are commonly included within elementary school social studies curriculum. For this reason, teachers should know how the literature they select historically represents Native Americans. This historical representation includes—but is not limited to—their interactions with European explorers, colonists, and eventually Americans. Teachers must be aware that publishers of children’s books are businesses; their job is to sell books. As a result, these companies do not always ensure that the books they sell are historically …

To Make Florida Answer To Its Name: John Ellis, Bernard Romans And The Atlantic Science Of British West Florida, Kathleen S. Murphy
To Make Florida Answer To Its Name: John Ellis, Bernard Romans And The Atlantic Science Of British West Florida, Kathleen S. Murphy
History
As the royal agent for British West Florida and an avid naturalist, John Ellis, FRS, took a keen interest in both the scientific and the commercial potential of the nascent colony. This article explores how Ellis and his West Floridian correspondent Bernard Romans illuminate the social and material practices of colonial science. In particular, it builds on recent scholarship to argue that new natural knowledge about West Florida did not simply circulate in the Atlantic World, but was in fact engendered by the movement of objects and ideas through the many circuits of transatlantic natural history and imperial administration. Foregrounding …

What’S In A Bot? L2 Lexical Development Mediated Through Icall, Kelly Arispe
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
In recent years, the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has made great strides to refocus its attention on the essential role that vocabulary plays in becoming a proficient L2 learner (Nation, 2001). Moreover, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has made advances in providing interactive online tools that help L2 learners strategically engage and work through their vocabulary development. This present study reports on how an Intelligent CALL tool (ICALL), Langbot, helps learners at the beginner and intermediate levels with their lexical acquisition. Modeled after instant messaging systems, which create a synchronous communicative environment, Langbot acts like a pedagogical …
