Atomos, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2013-2014 Raise the Bar
Atomos is the newest full-length work by cutting-edge choreographer Wayne McGregor. Imagining the indivisible, order created through uncuttable structures and interwoven with an architectural manipulation of bodies, the newest piece from Wayne McGregor is performed by his ten dancers in McGregor’s unique style – sculptural, rigorous, jarring and hauntingly beautiful. Neo-classical ambient composers A Winged Victory For The Sullen play a new live score, with lighting from Lucy Carter, film by Ravi Deepres, and costumes designed by Studio XO whose groundbreaking wearable technologies and digital skins place them at the forefront of fashion and technology.

Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers
Long Hours Lasting Consequences: Children As Passive Victims In The Industrial Revolution And A Pivitol Part Of Reform, Hannah Myers
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The British Industrial Revolution has been studied extensively. Leading scholars of the past and present include, but are not limited to, Getrude Himmelfarb, E.P. Thompson, Sonya O. Rose, Mary Poovey, Troy Boone, Friedrich Engles, Oliver Hamlin, Hugh D. Hindman, and George Dodd. Each focused on different aspects of the experience, which range from the economy, to family roles, including definitions of childhood and gender roles, to education, Victorian values, working conditions, and even slavery. The reason for such a diversity of approaches was clearly explained by Joel Mokyr, who argued: . . . [T]he Industrial Revolution illustrates the limitations of …

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro
Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro
Psychology Faculty Research
Two of the most unstable domains involved in identity formation, the religious and sexual domains, come into conflict when vulnerable populations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community experience oppression from the indoctrination of religious beliefs that persecute their sexual orientation. This conflict, aptly termed identity incongruity in this article’s discourse, results in a schism that adversely affects these vulnerable populations. This paper investigates the roles of religion, spirituality and available institutional solutions to propose customized, culturally adapted, contextually based and collaborative community-level interventions that would facilitate the reconciliation of the conflicting identity domains.

Building And Maintaining Plankhouses At Two Villages On The Southern Northwest Coast Of North America, Emily Evelyn Shepard
Dissertations and Theses
Plankhouses were functionally and symbolically integral to Northwest Coast societies, as much of economic and social life was predicated on these dwellings. This thesis investigates both plankhouse architecture and the production of these dwellings. Studying plankhouse construction and maintenance provides information regarding everyday labor, landscape use outside of villages, organization of complex tasks, and resource management.
This thesis investigates three plankhouse structures at two sites, Meier and Cathlapotle, in the Lower Columbia River Region of the southern Northwest Coast of North America. Methods consisted of digitizing over 1,100 architectural features, creating detailed maps of architectural features, and conducting statistical and …
Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan
Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan
Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications
Current and prospective migration law and policy in Chile does not adequately incorporate the causes, content, and consequences of international migration to and from Chile. We describe and examine migration in‐flows, out‐flows, migration‐related policies, and how those policies drive, and are driven by, notions of development in Chile. We explore contradictions in Chilean nascent migration policy currently under legislative review. We argue that it is imperative that migration, migration policy, and their relationship to development be discussed inclusively and transparently and be explicitly incorporated into the Chilean government's nascent migration and development legal policies and frameworks.

Teachers Observing Teachers: Factors That Contribute To Critical Thinking In Peer Coaching, Jessica Lafern Bryan
Teachers Observing Teachers: Factors That Contribute To Critical Thinking In Peer Coaching, Jessica Lafern Bryan
Theses and Dissertations
Many university language programs draw on undergraduate as well as graduate students to conduct their courses. These student instructors do not always have adequate pedagogical preparation or experience. Past research suggests that conducting peer observations followed by a group reflection on basic teaching practice would help teachers become more aware of their own teaching. This research aims to investigate whether peer coaching followed by peer reflection meetings increases instructor effectiveness and confidence, as well as whether it is the observations or the reflections that encourage teachers to think more critically and improve their teaching.

Decanting The Rabelaisian Casks: Democratizing Neoplatonic Poetic Fury In Baudelaire's “L’Âme Du Vin”, Kristen Ballieu
Theses and Dissertations
The following document is a meta-commentary on the article "Decanting the Rabelaisian Casks: Democratizing Neoplatonic Poetic Fury in Baudelaire's 'L’âme du vin'," co-authored by Dr. Robert J. Hudson and myself, which will soon be submitted for publication. It contains an annotated bibliography of all our primary and secondary sources and an account of the genesis of the argument and the writing of the article. Our article is based upon an analysis of "‘L’âme du vin," the threshold poem of "Le Vin," the central section of Charles Baudelaire's celebrated volume Les Fleurs du Mal. As we demonstrate, previous scholarship on this …
A Maoli-Based Art Education: Ku'u Mau Kuamo'o 'Ōlelo, Raquel Malia Andrus
A Maoli-Based Art Education: Ku'u Mau Kuamo'o 'Ōlelo, Raquel Malia Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
Leaders in K-12 education in Hawai'i are increasingly advocating for and utilizing the culture and knowledge of the kānaka Maoli, the native people of these islands, as a context for learning in a variety of curricular disciplines and approaches (Benham & Heck, 1998; Kani'iaupuni, Ledward & Jensen, 2010; Kana'iaupuni & Malone, 2006; Kahakalau, 2004; Meyer, 2004). To expand upon this trend, this thesis uses a combination of autoethnographic and critical indigenous methodologies to present a personal narrative that looks specifically at approaching art education from a Maoli perspective. Through extensive participant/observer reflections, two place-based and culture-based art education experiences are …

A Multi-Method Examination Of Pre-Service Teacher Attitudes Toward Gay And Lesbian Parents, Julie Herbstrith
Theses and Dissertations
An increasing number of children are being raised by gay and lesbian parents, but there is a dearth of literature that examines the challenges they face as they navigate the school system. The negative stigma of homosexuality and the increased visibility of these families suggest that research on teacher attitudes toward homosexual parents is needed. Using implicit, explicit, and behavioral measures, pre-service teacher attitudes toward gay and lesbian parents were assessed. Individual differences that influence the expression of sexual prejudice were also examined. Specifically, this study examined the relation between implicit and explicit measures. Also, implicit and explicit measures were …
Putting A Human Face On The Minimum Wage, Christopher R. Fee
Putting A Human Face On The Minimum Wage, Christopher R. Fee
English Faculty Publications
What is a “livable wage,” and should we strive to raise wages for American workers?
There are lots of conflicting studies and reports. The Congressional Budget Office projects that an increase in the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour would eliminate 500,000 jobs while raising the incomes of nearly 17 million Americans.
Even prominent economists like David Card and David Neumark diametrically disagree on the likely consequences of raising the minimum wage, and their studies of results in New Jersey have consistently yielded conflicting results for decades. [excerpt]

Public Space And British Colonial Power : The Transformation Of Hong Kong Statue Square, 1890s-1970s, Wing Sze Tam
Lingnan Theses
This thesis analyzes the relationship between public space and government legitimacy through the emergence and transformation of Hong Kong Statue Square. It explains the colonial government’s construction of Statue Square in 1896 as a symbolic place to establish her legitimacy and present her imperial power. The construction of Statue Square also shows the mutually beneficial relationship between the colonial government and the foreign merchants in Hong Kong, especially Sir Catchick Paul Chater, who put great effort into the Praya Reclamation Scheme that made the establishment of Statue Square possible. By demonstrating their loyalty to the Crown through the construction of …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the insider/outsider dynamic experienced by individuals as they enter diverse social situations. The shift from insider to outsider is evoked through an art installation of 18 sculptures drawing influence from "goth" subculture, as the viewer enters and interacts with the art space. The subjects of culture and identity are discussed as they pertain to insider/outsider status.
