Hinch, New Salem, Illinois. She provides some family news and refers to the recent presidential election as a “great calamity” over which the defeated Whigs are “down in the mouth.” Part of the letter is written by Elizabeth’s daughter Avaline. She reports on her health, suggests names for Hinch’s baby son, and forecasts the continuation of hard times with the election of “old Polk.”

Prisoner Experiences: Memoirs Of Libby Prison, Megan A. Sutter Mar 2014

Prisoner Experiences: Memoirs Of Libby Prison, Megan A. Sutter

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Numerous books have been written on the contested topic of Civil War prisons and prisoners of war. Scholars struggle with who to blame for the outrageous and horrible conditions of the prisons. Some speculate that the Southerners were crueler to their captives while others say the opposite. As well, scholars question whether the conditions of the Southern prisons were better or worse than the prisons in the North. [excerpt]

The Christological Remnants Within Eucharistic Prayers, Nathan Peter Chase Mar 2014

The Christological Remnants Within Eucharistic Prayers, Nathan Peter Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the development of Christology in the early Church concluding with a look at Angel Christology in the Roman Canon and Logos Christology in The Prayers of Sarapion of Thmuis. A lack of Christological precision in early Christian praying has anachronistically led modern scholars to question the orthodoxy of early prayers. This paper argues that just as liturgical scholars have long realized that the development of liturgy moved from diversity to uniformity, so too this is the case with theology. The movement to tighten the borders of orthodoxy has led to liturgical standardization. Just as the dating of …

Word And Image Of The ‘Other’: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Georg Forster’S “Voyage Round The World” In Comparison To William Hodges’ Paintings Produced During Captain Cook’S 2nd Voyage, Philip Thomas, Joe Ostraff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I’ll never forget the moment sitting in the large workshop in the basement of Rangi Kipa’s house in Ohope, New Zealand, when he talked about his art and especially the Paraka carvings, a shape based off the prow figure found on traditional Maori Waka (a canoe like watercraft). Kipa, a leading contemporary sculptor, carver, and tattoo artist from New Zealand and Maori, explained that the Paraka has come to represent Kipa’s navigation of his art, which looks back into the customary art techniques, but also forward into the modern art world. It prompts a re-examination of the past identity of …

The Diabetes Hope Project: Creating A Resource For Children Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes & Their Parent’S, Maria Mercer, Robert Barrett Mar 2014

The Diabetes Hope Project: Creating A Resource For Children Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes & Their Parent’S, Maria Mercer, Robert Barrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Of the 25.8 million children and adults with diabetes in America, only about 5% of those are diagnosed as Type 1.1 Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease managed, but not cured, through insulin therapy via injections or an insulin pump. Diagnosed mainly in children and adolescents under 20, Type 1 diabetes is an overwhelming change in the lives of those diagnosed and their families. It is from personally dealing with Type 1 that I came up with the idea of the HOPE project. Knowing how difficult and overwhelming the transition from normal to diabetic life is, I realized it …

Consuming Food Memoirs: Identity, Experience, Legitimization As Rhetorical Sustenance, Kayla Bruce Mar 2014

Consuming Food Memoirs: Identity, Experience, Legitimization As Rhetorical Sustenance, Kayla Bruce

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of nonfiction food texts as representative of a facet of life writing texts, and as they are currently viewed and used by readers both within and outside of the academy. The examination of food texts focuses around Kate Christensen's 2013 food memoir Blue Plate Special: An Autobiography of My Appetites and her food blog, Don't Let It Bring You Down that proceeded and followed the publication of the food memoir. Likewise, author Molly Wizenberg's food blog Orangette preceded the publication of her 2009 food memoir A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes From My Kitchen …

Mending The Broken Pieces: A Memoir, Sheila Kay Dodson Mar 2014

Mending The Broken Pieces: A Memoir, Sheila Kay Dodson

Theses and Dissertations

This is a memoir that addresses cumulative experiences from early childhood through adulthood, with the purpose of gaining a better understanding of a person's life through comprehensive reflection. We often have little or no control over our existence. Everything happens for a reason, good or bad. These experiences have culminated into womanhood, allowing more clarity and a full appreciation for each. Giving up or changing courses on one's own is always an option and there are times when one feels like doing just that. The truth of the matter is we all have had our moments. Most of us never …

Religiosity, Spirituality, And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults In An Active Living Community, Monica D'Adrianne Solomon Mar 2014

Religiosity, Spirituality, And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults In An Active Living Community, Monica D'Adrianne Solomon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The population of older adults in the United States is steadily rising. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a call to reduce mental distress in older adults. Research shows that mental distress is associated with depressive symptoms, which are significantly related to many chronic medical conditions, functional impairment, suicide, and all-cause mortality. Depression is a major public health concern. There is an interest in gerontology research on the buffering role of engagement against depressive symptoms such as volunteering, social activities, and religion. Certain religious beliefs and behaviors contribute to maintaining or improving mental health and research …

The test group was comprised of thirty children chosen in infancy: all unwanted pregnancies that would have been wasted in public institutions far inferior to ours, without the extensive opportunities for education, for progress. The children required no mothers in our program. Had they ever wished to know their origins, they might have perused the metal file cabinet in which all of their files were kept, right down to the looping signatures of the women who had signed their lives to us. They never did; they were taught better, instructed that origins were of little consequence when compared with the …

The trees were bare, twisting around themselves in a lifeless way. Some leaned, almost sagging with agony, while the rest remained erect, giving only the illusion of vigor. There were six of them; six black, dead trees forming a circle around her grave. Each wailed as the wind thrashed at their degenerate forms. Winter had eradicated autumn, mercilessly ravishing the land of all viability.
