The Art Of Survival: Bengali Pats, Patuas And The Evolution Of Folk Art In India, Pilar Jefferson Apr 2014

The Art Of Survival: Bengali Pats, Patuas And The Evolution Of Folk Art In India, Pilar Jefferson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The process of becoming a part of a globalized world has made India as a nation worry about what makes it culturally unique. Since the beginning of its relationship with Britain folk artists in particular have been directly connected to cultural preservation efforts in India. The impetus to preserve this uniqueness usually falls on rural folk cultures, whose traditions change more slowly because they have less access to modernizing influences. The problem with idealizing the static nature of folk art is that it keeps the artists from improving their lives, at the risk of abandoning their work to seek out …

Chasing Rabbits: A Collection Of Personal Essays, Max Ogles, Dr. Patrick Madden Apr 2014

Chasing Rabbits: A Collection Of Personal Essays, Max Ogles, Dr. Patrick Madden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The intent of my project was to write a collection of nonfiction personal essays in the classical essayist tradition. The personal essay tradition began in the 1500s with Michel de Montaigne. Montaigne is known as the “Father of the Essay” because he invented the form and wrote the very first collection of essays, which covered a variety of topics ranging from “thumbs” to “prayer” to “solitude.” Other essayists followed his example, including notable writers Francis Bacon (1600s), Samuel Johnson (1700s), William Hazlitt and Charles Lamb (1800s), and George Orwell and E.B. White (1900s). The essay tradition continues today and is …

Building Bridges And Crossing Boundaries: Philosophy, Theology, And The Interruptions Of Transcendence, Philip J. Rossi Apr 2014

Building Bridges And Crossing Boundaries: Philosophy, Theology, And The Interruptions Of Transcendence, Philip J. Rossi

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Discussions about theological realism within analytic philosophy of religion, and the larger conversation between analytic and continental styles in philosophy of religion have generated relatively little interest among Catholic philosophers and theologians; conversely, the work of major figures in recent Catholic theology seems to evoke little interest from analytic philosophers of religion. Using the 1998 papal encyclical on faith and reason, Fides et ratio, as a major point of reference, this essay offers a preliminary account of the bases for such seeming mutual indifference and offers some suggestions for future dialogue.

Images For A Nation: The Role Of Conservation Photography In American Environmentalism, Nathaniel W. Yale Apr 2014

Images For A Nation: The Role Of Conservation Photography In American Environmentalism, Nathaniel W. Yale

Pomona Senior Theses

Photographs have long been integral in revealing American values, ideals, and identity. Accordingly, a study of environmental, or "conservation," imagery offers insight into America’s relationship with the natural world. In an examination of key figures and their conservation photography work, this thesis explores how the national conservation dialogue has been shaped by powerful images that, in some cases, even led to crucial acts of federal conservation. The first section highlights four photographers and their context and influence in this dialogue: W.H. Jackson’s photographs from Hayden’s 1871 survey of Yellowstone, Carleton Watkins’ work at Yosemite and Mariposa Grove in the 1860s, …

Traditional Foot Racing V. Obstacle Racing, Kathleen Sands

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

The purpose of this study was to examine how to best promote, execute, and manage traditional foot racing and obstacle racing in the 21st century. As a result, this study investigated the two different cultures of traditional foot racing and obstacle racing, and what the introduction of obstacle racing means for racing coordinators of both types of events.

A mixed methods study was conducted …

Barriers To Successful Cervical Cancer Screening In Rural Kwazulu-Natal, Cato Manor, And Cape Town, Amanda Comai Apr 2014

Barriers To Successful Cervical Cancer Screening In Rural Kwazulu-Natal, Cato Manor, And Cape Town, Amanda Comai

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2000, the South African Department of Health produced a nationwide policy intended to combat the growing crisis of cervical cancer. Nearly fifteen years later, however, the disease remains a significant cause of death among certain female populations, especially those who are rural, poor, and HIV-positive. It is undeniable that challenges of access, awareness, resource demand, and stigmatization stand in the way of complete policy enactment.

In this study, I explore in detail the barriers that prevent successful implementation of the policy. My research combines interviews with a variety of individuals and participant observation at the Cancer Association of South …

Hip Hop Highways: Mapping Complex Identities Through Moroccan Rap, Anisha Bhat

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During the post-colonial period, Moroccan visual artists belonging to the “School of the Sign” reformulated traditional symbols of Moroccan heritage in new and innovative ways in order to directly challenge orientalist conceptions of Moroccan identity. Today, media outlets have heralded the rise of the musical genre of Moroccan hip-hop as a potential new medium for the transmission of Moroccan youth identity and revolutionary ideals. As a result, the purpose of this study was to investigate how Moroccan rappers assert their personal conceptions of cultural identity in a larger framework of resistance against societal expectations. What, if any, are the “signs” …

The Art Of Vaisnava Vegetarian Cooking: The Manifestation Of Cultural Identity Through The Culinary Craft, Selena Greising

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Food and religion are both defining characteristics of a culture, serving as a unique language of communication. The Vaisnava Hindu tradition holds very specific guidelines for food in relation to the religious lifestyle. The inclusions and exclusions, cooking techniques, history, and the manifestation of anciently rooted traditions in the modern world reveal a great deal about the people within the culture. Vaisnavas do not consume meat, fish, garlic, onion, carrot or mushroom, but still maintain the Indian tradition of food bursting with flavor. Beyond the strict culinary aspects of the culture, the religious beliefs exhibit a strong influence upon the …

Alternative Histories: Observing Theosophical ‘Truths’ In Hindu Nationalism, Celia Garrity

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Though the Theosophical Society promotes the universal wisdom found at the core of all religions, the Society locates India, particularly Hindu India, as the unwavering source of spiritual wisdom valuable worldwide. As a result, the Theosophical Society has reconfigured its own Hindu ‘truths’ within its teachings. Immaterial Traditions: Evolving Values In The Practice & Preservation Of Bhutanese Calligraphy, Madeline Johnson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Lying somewhere between art, craft and document, the place of calligraphy in Bhutanese culture is difficult to singularly define: individual practice and motivation conform to the predetermined aesthetic of alphabets, and creativity serves the pragmatic end of documentation. In Bhutan's ancient history, the art of handwriting developed out of necessity, used for religious records and correspondences Bhutanese society, given the convenience of digital text. While cultural preservation has been a political imperative in Bhutan since the 1960's, the preservation of traditional crafts is mostly limited to those that appeal to increasing tourist market. While the active preservation of Bhutan's unique …
