The Sodomy Trial Of Nicholas Sension, 1677: Documents And Teaching Guide, Richard Godbeer, Douglas L. Winiarski Apr 2014

The Sodomy Trial Of Nicholas Sension, 1677: Documents And Teaching Guide, Richard Godbeer, Douglas L. Winiarski

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The sodomy trial of Nicholas Sension in 1677 has long fascinated historians, in part because the surviving documentation from this particular case is exceptionally full and richly detailed, but also because it challenges long-held assumptions about attitudes toward sodomy in early America. The trial records cast light not only on the history of sexuality but also on a broad range of themes relating to seventeenth-century New England’s society and culture. Yet until now no complete edition of the documents from Sension’s trial has appeared in print. This edition is intended primarily for use in undergraduate courses. It includes a substantial …

The Peters Projection And The Latitude And Longitude Of Recolonization, Timothy Barney Apr 2014

The Peters Projection And The Latitude And Longitude Of Recolonization, Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In 1973, German historian Arno Peters unveiled the “Peters projection,” a map that challenged the Eurocentric Mercator style by redrawing the so-called “Third World” to appear more prominent on the global landscape. The projection sparked intense debate among cartographers about the overt use of ideology in mapping, while simultaneously championed by international groups (from the UN to church organizations) as a corrective against the marginalization of developing nations. This essay addresses how the Peters map became a rhetorical emblem for an internationalist identity within the contentious spatial conceptions constraining the Cold War. Ultimately, the Peters projection, despite its radicalism, constituted …

Victorian Domesticity And The Perpetuation Of Childhood: An Examination Of Gender Roles And The Family Unit In J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Abigail Nusbaum Apr 2014

Victorian Domesticity And The Perpetuation Of Childhood: An Examination Of Gender Roles And The Family Unit In J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Abigail Nusbaum

Masters Theses

This work examines JM Barrie's Peter Pan in light of its cultural context. It works to show how the Victorian ideology of the separate spheres narrowed the scope of roles for men and women within the home, which ultimately led to an obsession with childhood that manifested itself strongly in the works of the children of the Victorians, the Edwardians. A study of the Victorian society in which Barrie grew up and first imagined Peter Pan, accompanied by a close reading of the text, reveals Barrie using the various characters' interactions with the title character as cultural artifacts that illuminate …

In Thanksgiving And Praise: Prayer, Rhetoric, And Congressional Thanksgiving Proclamations, Samuel Wells, Dr. Christopher Hodson Apr 2014

In Thanksgiving And Praise: Prayer, Rhetoric, And Congressional Thanksgiving Proclamations, Samuel Wells, Dr. Christopher Hodson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With my grant I analyzed how early congressional Thanksgiving proclamations textually moved away from overtly Christian wording while simultaneously retaining a rhetorical Christian foundation. To illustrate my point I chose to analyze said declarations as textual examples of prayer. In order to do so, I first examined Congress’s original declaration of 1777. Second, by building upon a 1739 tract by Isaac Watts entitled “A Guide to Prayer,” I employed later proclamations to illustrate the genre’s continued reliance upon the rhetoric of prayer in the face of shifting ideological norms.

Discrimination And Second Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Nicholas Kramer, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Discrimination And Second Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Nicholas Kramer, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Our research project has been a very exciting development, and although there is more to be done, we have accomplished a lot in the past year. Three different surveys, all of which had 40 questions, were written and distributed while I was on a study abroad in Berlin, Germany. The point of the surveys was to discover what personal language attitudes and biases towards foreigners were held. We investigated three groups of German speakers: native German speakers, non-native German speakers, and BYU students. Initially, we wanted to look at how language gains were affected by bias, but since the language …

Almost A Man: A Collection Of Short Drama, Tyler Fruge' Apr 2014

Almost A Man: A Collection Of Short Drama, Tyler Fruge'

English & Modern Languages: Theses, Dissertations & Student Publications

The purpose of this thesis is to examine through drama the concept of manhood and what our culture defines as being a man. Manhood is what my characters struggle to achieve, but they fall short of their goals due to issues of co-dependency, immaturity, and refusal to give up control; they are well-composed and obedient externally, yet struggle internally. My characters were brought up and raised in a setting with inarguable demands, explicitly on what to believe, how to behave, and what is and isn’t acceptable. They’ve never been taught/told it’s okay to say “I’m not sure if I agree …

In The Air Tonight: An Uncommon Interface For Common Concern, Maggie Chan, Dave Colangelo, Patricio Davila, Robert Tu

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is concerned with addressing social concerns with large-scale, multi-modal media art that uses digital networks, reactive architecture, and the city as semiotic resources. As artists and designers who are involved in socially engaged practice, we see an important role in foregrounding political and social issues through networks and architecture, negotiating and furnishing access to both while shaping compelling interfaces that allow people to contribute by amplifying an area of common concern. We discuss some previous work by Davila and Colangelo and focus on our latest project, In The Air, Tonight, which aims to visualize local wind patterns combined …

The Impact Of Favela Painting, Fariha Rahman Apr 2014

The Impact Of Favela Painting, Fariha Rahman

Senior Inquiry High School Program

While Brazil is growing rapidly, increased attention is being paid to its many lowerincome “marginal” neighborhoods, called favelas, found near and within many major Brazilian cities. Three such favelas have been visually transformed by a Dutch design firm’s Favela Painting project, which consists of enormous murals painted on the walls of favela housing. The project was developed by two designers, Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn or Haas&Hahn, after they first visited a Brazilian favela to film a music video. Their original intent had little to do with any negative conditions of favelas – they simply wanted authorization for a painting …

Becoming-Other: Foucault, Deleuze, And The Political Nature Of Thought, Vernon W. Cisney Apr 2014

Becoming-Other: Foucault, Deleuze, And The Political Nature Of Thought, Vernon W. Cisney

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this paper I employ the notion of the ‘thought of the outside’ as developed by Michel Foucault, in order to defend the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze against the criticisms of ‘elitism,’ ‘aristocratism,’ and ‘political indifference’—famously leveled by Alain Badiou and Peter Hallward. First, I argue that their charges of a theophanic conception of Being, which ground the broader political claims, derive from a misunderstanding of Deleuze’s notion of univocity, as well as a failure to recognize the significance of the concept of multiplicity in Deleuze’s thinking. From here, I go on to discuss Deleuze’s articulation of the ‘dogmatic image …

Reflections On Reading Plato And Aristotle At Lancaster, Daniel R. Denicola Apr 2014

Reflections On Reading Plato And Aristotle At Lancaster, Daniel R. Denicola

Philosophy Faculty Publications

While serving as a Visiting Fellow at Lancaster University, I was asked to lead an informal seminar on Classical Philosophy. It was to be a reading group of postgraduate students and staff, focusing on two foundational texts of Western civilization: Plato’s Republic and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. I happily accepted. The resulting two-hour, weekly sessions over Michaelmas Term were lively times of philosophical effervescence, full of probative questions, interesting interpretations, diverse evaluations, vigorous debates, and shared insights. Postmodernists engaged in the holy act of Interpreting the Text, we nonetheless strained to grasp the “true meaning” of the texts, to extend our …

New Tricks (2014), John Nelson, Katie Miller, Stacey Berry, Deana Hueners, Ashley Geditz, Brianna Prill, Ashley Rieger, Mary Metzger, Sarah Sproul, Dillon Dwyer

New Tricks

It is an exclusive secret if one knows a muse and it is an even more exclusive ability if said person is able to channel her beauty. For most people, seducing a muse is no easy task. It takes a special kind of creative mind to attract the personification of art. Frequently, the rigorous process of invoking one of the muses often involves a set of rituals that resemble courtship displays. Muses demand undying attention and affection from their vessel before they will allow themselves to flow through a mortal instrument and onto a medium of art. In those rare …

Creole & Multiracial (Research Report #122), Michael Cope, Nile Patterson, Mark Schafer, Dari Green, Amanda Cowley, Troy Blanchard Apr 2014

Creole & Multiracial (Research Report #122), Michael Cope, Nile Patterson, Mark Schafer, Dari Green, Amanda Cowley, Troy Blanchard

LSU AgCenter Research Reports

This is the eighth in this series of reviews. This review focuses primarily on the Creoles. It also describes some multiracial groups with a historical presence, as well as the current trends in multiracial identity in the Gulf of Mexico region. Concentrated in coastal Louisiana, Creoles represent one of the larger and more well-known multiracial (or mixed-race) groups that have long histories in the region.
